Meta Settles Child Protection Lawsuit for $18 Billion
$META (+1,05%) One week after the trial began, 52 state attorneys general from U.S. states, territories, and the District of Columbia. The company will pay over ten years in annual installments and commits to redesigning Facebook and Instagram for young people. Meta does not admit to any wrongdoing, and the settlement is subject to court approval.
What the lawsuit was about
The lawsuits date back to 2023 and were originally filed by 29 states . The allegation: Meta deliberately designed Facebook and Instagram to keep young people on the platforms for as long as possible—through endless scrolling, auto-playing videos, and “likes”—downplayed the well-known consequences for mental health, and used accounts belonging to children under the age of 13 in violation of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act , the U.S. privacy law for minors.
The trial began on August 19, 2026 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California before Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, with four states acting as lead plaintiffs. The plaintiffs sought damages of up to $1.4 trillion, a sum that Meta rejected as completely disproportionate. Witnesses included Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, among others.
How the $18 billion breaks down
The figures circulating in the press—ranging from $16.7 billion to $18 billion—can be explained by the structure of the payment:
- Guaranteed: $12.7 billion — about 70% — goes to the participating states
- Contingent: $5.3 billion – about 30%, payable only if YouTube and TikTok implement comparable protection standards and make the corresponding payments
- Impact on the balance sheet: approximately $10 billion Legal expenses that Meta plans to record in the third quarter of 2026
Changes Meta must make to its products
The following rules, among others, will apply to teen accounts on Facebook and Instagram in the future:
- Time limit: two hours per day, cumulative across both platforms, cannot be disabled without parental approval
- Night mode: No posting and no feed between midnight and 6 a.m.
- School Mode: Notifications muted between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
- Usage Guidelines: After every 15 minutes of continuous use, and additionally after 60 and 90 minutes per day
- Feed: The non-algorithmic version becomes the default setting
- Likes: Hidden by default for teens
- Age verification: Enhanced technology for detecting underage accounts
- Filters: Bans on cosmetic surgery and extreme makeup filters
Direct messages are exempt from time limits, Night Mode, and School Mode. At the same time, Meta has published an open letter in which the company calls on YouTube and TikTok to adopt the same rules.
What could this mean?
Financially, the amount is manageable for Meta. Spread over ten years, it averages just over $1.8 billion per year, compared to quarterly revenue of $60.8 billion and $90.3 billion in cash and marketable securities at the end of the second quarter. Given the amount of damages sought and the risk of a judgment—including court-imposed conditions—the settlement is the more predictable option for Meta.
The conditions, however, target the very thing Meta makes money from: User time is the commoditysold in the advertising business. A two-hour cap, a nighttime block, and a non-algorithmic feed as the default setting reduce the available ad inventory in an age group for which advertisers traditionally pay a premium.
The conditional tranche is actually the most remarkable part: It ties $5.3 billion to the condition that competitors follow suit, thereby giving Meta a financial incentive to $GOOGL (-1,63%) push (YouTube) and ByteDance (TikTok) to adopt the same rules—a point the open letter addresses directly.
Whoever is regulated first won’t want to remain the only one regulated, because otherwise, user time could migrate to the competition. The counterargument that the requirements affect only a small age group carries less weight than it sounds: the standards are likely to be used as a benchmark for the entire industry in future proceedings.
Overall, while the settlement brings this case to a close, it also establishes a set of rules that extend far beyond Meta. It remains to be seen whether YouTube and TikTok will follow suit—$5.3 billion depends on it.

It's just a shame that it doesn't really hurt the company financially.
I also think it's cheeky that 1.8 trillion turned into 18 billion.

Reaction from Pinterest?
To my surprise, $PINS announced share buyback plans of 3.5 billion today shortly after ARK exited the company.
Funnily enough, I got in in October 25 with the prospect of good earnings and ARK's investment shortly before.
Taught me not to blindly follow big fund managers, cost me 50% of my investment in the meantime.

This is my first post, thank you all for the support in the community. I'll try to get more involved, it's still a lot of new territory for me 😄

Nov 10 / Pinterest — Compelling Setup With a Big Question Mark
Risk/reward looks interesting, but does it beat my biggest position
I’ve been watching Pinterest more closely since last quarter, and honestly, I have an urge to buy it at the current levels. The markets seem to underappreciate Pinterest’s strength and ability to deliver. The company just showed another solid quarter: revenue up 17% year-over-year, margins expanding, and free cash flow growing in the mid-20s. They are sitting on nearly $3 billion in cash, no debt, engagement is strong with almost 600 million monthly users, and guidance (slightly below expectation) still implies and impresses with mid-teens growth for the next few years. In any other market situation, this would be considered a great setup.
But, of course, this is 2025 and we’ve collectively decided that every company must be either an AI winner or an AI victim. To an extent, I believe this is justified, just because AI is likely the biggest innovation of at least my generation and will completely reshape how we work, live, and even think. For Pinterest, the supposed consensus narrative is that AI image generation could/will “replace” the platform. I do get where that’s coming from, since the site is flooded with AI-generated images, and it’s fair to ask whether people will still need Pinterest when they can just ask ChatGPT or Midjourney to create the exact thing they want. But here’s my view: the fear is probably overblown.
Frankly, the fear of AI completely destroying certain industries and companies is massively overblown anyway. Model case: Adobe. AI disruption risk is real in some aspects such as Photoshop, but the company shows no sign of slowing business caused by AI, and margins are still sky-high with sticky subscription revenue. Yes, a risk discount on the stock is appropriate, but the levels it is currently trading at seem a little dramatic. The same applies to Salesforce.
Going back to Pinterest: Most people aren’t suddenly turning into digital artists. They are uncreative and lazy by nature (no offense). They’ll prefer scrolling through endless pre-made inspiration boards rather than crafting the perfect prompt. In that sense, AI might actually supercharge Pinterest by making the content universe infinite and engagement deeper.
From a valuation standpoint, things get interesting. The stock trades at a forward EV/Revenue below 4 and a free cash flow yield approaching 8%. That’s more than healthy, especially considering the expanding margins and consistently strong balance sheet management. And still, the stock tanked after earnings, down almost 20% on what was, objectively, a decent report with just a few beauty marks. That feels like an overreaction driven more by macro fear and AI paranoia than by fundamentals.
I won’t lie, I’m very tempted. But I already own Meta, arguably (or certainly) the best social media company in existence, and it’s my largest position for a reason. Meta trades cheaper, has a more diversified revenue base, and benefits from many of the same ad trends that Pinterest does, just at a much larger scale.
So while I find Pinterest’s setup very compelling right now, I’m not pulling the trigger yet. If it drops further, I’ll reconsider and possibly add it as a smaller satellite position.
For now, I might keep scrolling on Pinterest, but not yet on the buy button.
