249Quarterly Results: Oct. 26–30, 2016
This is what happened last week
Tuesday:
There has been a lot of positive news about the German economy recently. August saw a bit of a setback, with orders plummeting 10% compared to the previous month. Nevertheless, the order situation in Germany has improved significantly on a year-over-year basis.
The phase-out of internal combustion engines in the EU could be further softened, as Germany and France appear to have reached a compromise on this issue. Auto stocks are gaining ground.
$MBG (-1,34 %) Mercedes-Benz is selling significantly fewer cars, almost exclusively because of China. By contrast, sales in Europe, the U.S., and for electric vehicles have increased. Interestingly, sales of $1211 (+5,06 %) BYD have actually fallen even more sharply in China than those of Mercedes.
Friday:
On the brink of an escalating trade war, the EU and China agree to curb hybrid imports into the EU. China has agreed to moderate its exports. The figure is reportedly in the range of several million cars.
Top News Stories from the Past Week
Tuesday:
In its IPO prospectus—parts of which have been made public—Anthropic warns of “existential risks to humanity” posed by its technology. At the same time, the prospectus reports losses in the billions.
Wednesday:
Inflation in Germany rises to 3.3%, its highest level in three years. The increase exceeds expectations. Due to expectations of rising key interest rates, yields on government bonds continue to climb.
Good news for the German auto industry ($VOW (-0,94 %) VW, $BMW (+0,76 %) BMW, $MBG (-1,34 %) Mercedes-Benz). In the future, electric cars may also be used as energy storage devices. This could further boost sales of electric cars.
Thursday:
The German government now forecasts 1.3% growth for 2026 and 1.1% growth for next year. Growth is not expected to decline noticeably again until 2028, when it is projected to drop to 0.6%. The question is how sustainable this growth will be, given that much of the government’s spending has been financed by debt. However, this growth is occurring despite the wars in Iran and Ukraine.

New additions to the portfolio since Wednesday.
To further diversify my portfolio and pursue dividend growth, I purchased the following stocks on Wednesday and Thursday, which I am now gradually adding to:
35 shares $UPS (-0,3 %) at €80.99
10 shares $WSO (-1,13 %) at €288.10
50x$VIPER at €35.48
10x $EL (+2,5 %) at €144.82
I also made additional purchases of
20 shares $MBG (-1,34 %) at €42.25
15 shares $MUX (+3,01 %) at €23.02
Currently, there are still approximately 10K available that are scheduled to be deployed in the market before December to expand positions.
The four additions mentioned above will be expanded by approximately 5K.
The other 5K are planned but not yet set in stone for:
Netflix; McDonald’s; Vistra Energy; Deutsche Telekom; and Oracle.
Have a great Sunday, everyone ✌🏽
My Beginnings
I've been investing for 6 months now.
I'm very hesitant when it comes to investing in promising smaller companies with growth potential, and I tend to take a more defensive approach.
My thinking is that at a price of about €200, I should still $MCD (-1,4 %) and ride the wave of rising AI figures into the $W1TB (+5,46 %) .
The $MBG (-1,34 %) in my profile—I’m ignoring that; it was a gift from TR and wasn’t really on my mind. But it’s just there.
$XRP (-1,6 %) It was a one-time investment to see how the crypto market might behave. I also have a tiny stake in $SOL (-1,3 %) .
The majority consists of $IWDA (-0,27 %) and $EIMI (+0,49 %)
Mercedes-Benz Ahead of Its Quarterly Results – Is the Premium Strategy Still the Right Path?
On July 28, $MBG (-1,34 %) its quarterly earnings. According to the current analyst consensus on Investing.com, the following are expected:
• EPS:
1.33 EUR
• Revenue:
32.13 billion EUR
$MBG (-1,34 %) continues to operate in a challenging market environment. Demand in China remains subdued, competition—particularly in the electric vehicle segment—is intense, and at the same time, tariffs and geopolitical uncertainties are weighing on the industry. This makes it all the more important to see whether $MBG (-1,34 %) it can maintain its profitability at an attractive level despite these challenges. I am therefore particularly interested in the development of the adjusted EBIT margin in the passenger car business, the free cash flow of the industrial business, vehicle deliveries, and the product mix. For a premium manufacturer in particular, it is crucial whether high-end models and high-margin trim levels can partially offset the pressure on earnings.
I will also be closely monitoring how demand in China develops and what statements management makes regarding the future of electric mobility. I’ll be particularly interested to see whether management observes early signs of stabilization in the Chinese premium segment or whether ongoing price pressure continues to weigh on margins.
In addition, I’m interested in whether the initial effects of the ongoing product offensive—particularly with regard to the new models—are already becoming apparent.
Another key focus for me will be capital allocation. $MBG (-1,34 %) has been one of the most shareholder-friendly companies in the European automotive sector for years. In addition to an attractive dividend, extensive share buybacks have also played an important role in the past. Following the resumption of the buyback program last year, the market is likely to pay particular attention to whether management continues to adhere to its shareholder-friendly capital policy despite the more challenging environment, or shifts its focus more toward balance sheet strength and investments. Especially in a cyclical business, I believe it is important that capital returns do not come at the expense of financial flexibility.
Analysts, too, remain predominantly cautiously optimistic. According to Investing.com, 11 analysts currently recommend buying the stock, 10 rate it as “Hold,” and 2 issue a “Sell” recommendation. The average price target is around 53.80 EUR.
However, what is likely to be decisive for the market is not so much a slight beat in revenue or EPS, but rather whether $MBG (-1,34 %) it can confirm its full-year forecast. Especially following several profit warnings within the automotive industry, the market is likely to react particularly sensitively to any adjustments to the outlook.
My key metrics to watch for the quarterly results
• Adjusted EBIT margin in the passenger car business
• Free cash flow from the industrial business
• Vehicle deliveries and product mix
• Performance of top-end models and the premium strategy
• Performance in China and Europe
• Statements on electromobility and new model generations
• Full-year forecast and capital allocation
My Expectations: I expect a generally rather difficult quarter in a market environment that remains challenging. The key factor for me will be whether $MBG (-1,34 %) the company can maintain its high profitability despite the difficult conditions. In the long term, I’m particularly interested in whether the strategy of placing a stronger focus on high-margin premium vehicles continues to pay off and is reflected in free cash flow and returns. $MBG (-1,34 %) is already part of my portfolio. At the same time, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the stock for quite some time. This is less due to the quality of the company and more to the structural challenges facing the automotive industry—from increasing competition to the shift toward electric mobility and developments in China. The upcoming quarterly results will serve as an important indicator for me as to whether the long-term investment story continues to hold up or whether other companies currently offer a more attractive risk-reward ratio. After the results are released, I will therefore reassess whether $MBG (-1,34 %) it still deserves a place in my portfolio.

Purchased additional Bitcoin
After I $MBG (-1,34 %)
sold off some holdings from my portfolio, I decided to expand my $BTC (-1,07 %) Bitcoin position by the end of November.
The first tranche was purchased today (actually yesterday) at 54,700€. With a 1% spread plus approx. 1.5% in fees (123.47€), the cost basis came to just over 56k...
I’ll also be buying $VOW3 (-0,07 %) , $VNA (+0,2 %) and $MC (-1,54 %) - positions during the timeframe mentioned above and $BTC (-1,07 %) .
Dejando Mercedes-Benz atrás.
Desde 2020, he recibido un 55% de lo invertido en dividendo + otro 50% en acciones de Daimler truck, su spin off. La acción esta basicamente al mismo precio. $MBG (-1,34 %)
Most important news of the past week
Tuesday:
From today's perspective, ECB Director Isabel Schnabel considers an interest rate hike in June to be necessary in response to higher inflation. Presumably only a significant fall in oil prices can change this assessment.
$RACE (-0,98 %) Ferrari presents its first electric car, the Luce. The news was not initially well received on the stock market, partly because the Ferrari would look more like an Apple car than a Ferrari. The 550,000 euro car will be available from the fourth quarter.
$MC (-1,54 %) LVMH reports organic sales growth of 1% in the first quarter. Adjusted for currency effects, however, sales fell by 6%. China appears to be stabilizing, while sales in the Middle East are falling by double digits. The Arnault family continues to stock up.

Wednesday:
$MBG (-1,34 %) Mercedes wants to be the first manufacturer in Germany to sell cars with highly automated driving. Autonomous cars could be driving through cities as early as 2027. Mercedes would be the first manufacturer to reach level 4.
Friday:
Slight recovery on the labor market in Germany, with the number of unemployed falling below 3 million for the first time since December. However, the effect is mainly due to the seasonal recovery. Vacancies are mainly in the care sector, in the skilled trades, as well as among doctors and in the social sector.
