(Delayed) portfolio review October 2024 - A month with 5 share sales and one ETF sale

Even though October was just over two weeks ago, it feels like a different time. Germany still had an (unspeakable) traffic light government, in America the race for the White House was still open and a phone call between Scholz and Putin was unthinkable.

And even though November has been much more exciting on the stock market than October so far, October was a month of major changes from a personal perspective.

Apart from stock market investments, we are slowly starting to think about building a house. As a result, for the first time in a long time I made several sales in my portfolio and therefore also cleared out a little.

Previously this year, there were only 2 sales in my portfolio: at NVIDIA I took my stake out in February and since then have only let the profits run. In addition, in March I had Encavis after the takeover bid.

There were a total of 6 sales in October. For just under €7,000 I sold my China ETF which has recovered well over the last few months.

On the equity side, I have now sold most of the Corona Hype stocks and Match, Atlassian, Shopify and Block have been sold. In addition, I have also Pfizer sold. That was another €8,000, leaving only Sea from the Corona hype times, where I will remain invested for the time being, as it covers a completely different region geographically with Southeast Asia.

My savings quota will therefore be significantly reduced for the time being due to the upcoming house building project. From just under €1,500 to €2,000, it will only be €500-600 per month for the time being

Monthly view:

In total, October was +1,7%. This corresponds to price gains of ~5.000€.

The MSCI World (benchmark) was +0.9% and the S&P500 +1.5%

Winners & losers:

A look at the winners and losers is part of the usual picture:

On the winning side is, as so often NVIDIA is at the top with almost €3,000 in share price gains. It is followed by TSMC, Bitcoin, Alphabet and Palo Alto Networks with gains of €900-1,000 each.

On the loser side above all ASML made its contribution with price losses of almost €1,400. This was followed by Bechtle, Thermo Fisher, LVMH and Nike a broader mix of stocks that have not necessarily performed well recently. Nevertheless, all 5 loser stocks are still part of my savings plans.

The performance-neutral movements in October were just under €4,600. The sales proceeds are all still in cash accounts at the moment, so they have not yet flowed out of the assets. There will be a larger dip here at some point in the future.

Current year:

My performance in the current year is +27,5% and thus above my benchmark, the MSCI World with 23.7%.

In total, my portfolio currently stands at ~331.000€. This corresponds to an absolute growth of ~€79,000 in the current year 2023. ~53.000€ of this comes from price gains, ~3.000€ from dividends / interest and ~22.000€ from additional investments.

Dividend:

• Dividends in October were 32% above the previous year at ~€150
• TSMC is in the lead with a (gross) dividend of €30 every 3 months. TSMC has already raised the dividend for next year by 30% again
• In the current year, the dividends after 10 months are +25% over the first 9 months of 2023 at ~2.350€

Target 2024:

My goal for this year is to reach €300,000 in my portfolio. Due to the extremely positive market development in the current year, my portfolio already stands at ~€331,000 at the end of October.

As of mid-November and thanks to the Trump rally, my portfolio is currently approaching €350,000 and was even slightly above this level a few days ago. However, with a larger cash portion that will sooner or later flow into financing as equity.

Depot review January 2024 - January continues to ignite the tea turbo 🚀

All good things come in threes. November was the second-best November since I started investing. December was also the second-best December. And what follows in January? The second-best January for me since August 2013, of course.

January saw a performance of +6,1%. Only January 2015 was even better with +6.7%.

Compared to my benchmark (MSCI World), this was an extremely good start to 2024. The MSCI World "only" gained 3% in January.

On the winning side were once again the usual suspects in January. The strongest position was once again NVIDIA $NVDA (+1.51%)
with a gain of over €3,000.

The following positions were also occupied by the usual suspects with Palo Alto Networks $PANW (+7.32%) ASML $ASML (+3.19%) Microsoft $MSFT (+0.08%) and Crowdstrike $CRWD (+2.94%)

On the losers' side, there is also little new: In addition to Encavis $ECV (-0.24%) and Block $SQ (+3.97%) the main loser here is of course China with my China ETF $MCHS (+0.13%)

However, the China ETF only accounts for ~2% of my portfolio in total. That's why I'm continuing to look at it for the time being. However, I have not made any additional purchases via a savings plan since January. For me, this is a classic hold position at the moment.

In January, I invested a total of ~1.300€ in total. As already mentioned in my 2023 portfolio statement, I will have to reduce my investments in 2024 for the time being, at least in the first half of the year. The reason for this is some private expenses.

As I also had to use some of my cash reserves for this, I only added ~€500 net to my assets.

Focusing purely on this key figure, January was one of the worst months in years - but monthly investments should pick up again in the second half of 2024 at the latest.

In total, my portfolio now stands at ~268.000€. This corresponds to an absolute increase of ~€16,000 in January. ~15.000€ of this comes from price gains, ~140€ from dividends / interest and ~500€ from additional investments.

In absolute figures, January was the best month ever with the above-mentioned ~€15,000 price gains. I normally have to go to work for ~4 months to earn this money!

Dividend:

• The dividends in January were +37% above the previous year at ~€115
• Nike had a very unfavorable dividend policy last year and this year. The fourth dividend payment unfortunately only came in January. As a result, Nike paid out 3x in 2023 and will pay out 5x this year. In order to achieve better comparability, I recorded the dividend in December in Portfolio Performance as usual. If I had recorded the dividend in January, the growth would even be +50%
• The announcement of a dividend at Meta is also exciting $META (-0.47%)
  
• The big tech companies are generating endless cash flows, so it is only a matter of time before this money has to flow to shareholders. That leaves only Amazon $AMZN (-1.7%) and Alphabet $GOOG (-4.95%) as Microsoft and Apple have been paying dividends for a long time now
• I am curious to see whether these two companies will soon follow the Meta example and become dividend payers

With the continued very positive outlook for Big Tech, I am optimistic that the target for this year (€300,000 by the end of 2024) should definitely be achievable. Even if I have to significantly reduce my investments compared to the last few years.

What are your favorites for this year?

After 2023 clearly belonged to NVIDIA, Meta, Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, I wonder who the big winners will be in 2024?

If you look at January, these stocks are once again at the top.

In my view, however, this cannot continue for the whole year and there will certainly be other winners.

Depot review December 2023 - On the home stretch, 2023 was still able to make up for all the losses from 2022 and break the €250,000 mark 🚀

In keeping with the new year, there is also a new profile picture for the first time - an AI-generated elf who specializes in lembas and mithril trading.

But now to the portfolio update:

After November was already the second-best November of my investment career, December has now also gone into the books as the second-best. In total, a return of +3,2% for December.

This brings my performance for the year to +24,0% and was thus able to beat my benchmark, the MSCI World (+20.2%).

Tech stocks were the main winners in 2023. With almost +8.000€ is hardly surprising NVIDIA
$NVDA (+1.51%) at the top. With +5,000€ and +4,000€ respectively then follow Palo Alto Networks $PANW (+7.32%) and Meta
$META (-0.47%)

Also Alphabet
$GOOG (-4.95%) and Microsoft
$MSFT (+0.08%) with each +3.000€ very strong this year

The main losers this year were healthcare, utilities, consumer staples and China. The biggest losers this year were:

• Pfizer $PFE (+1.18%) -1.100€
• China ETF $MCHS (+0.13%) -900€
• Nextera $NEE (+1.44%) -900€
• Johnson & Johnson $JNJ (+2.5%) -800€
• Procter & Gable $PG (+2.05%) -500€

In total I bought again in December for ~2.500€ in December.

In total, my portfolio now stands at ~252.000€. This corresponds to an absolute increase of ~€74,000 in the current year 2023. ~43.000€ of this comes from price gains, ~2.500€ from dividends / interest and ~28.000€ from additional investments.

Thanks to the strong November and December, all price losses from 2022 have been made up.

Nevertheless, it has to be said that the last two years were not profitable overall. The portfolio has actually only grown through additional investments.

Dividend:

• Dividends in December were +23% above the previous year at ~€300
• For the year as a whole, dividends were +24% above the previous year at ~2.300€. In addition there was ~200€ in interest
• The following companies paid the highest dividends this year, all of which distributed more than €100: Amgen $AMGN (+1.21%)

With another extremely strong performance in December, my portfolio broke through the €250,000 barrier. This really exceeds my wildest expectations that I had a year ago or even in October.

At the beginning of the year, my year-end target was €220,000 and my best-case scenario was €240,000.

What investments did you make outside of the stock market?

In 2022 I bought a balcony power plant installed. This has given me around 600kwh this year, saving me electricity costs of ~€200. In relation to the purchase price, this corresponds to a return of almost 30%.

In 2024, the topic of renting is also on the agenda, so far only investments have been made here, but from 2024 rental income should also start to flow.

Outlook for 2024:

I am now assuming an above-average stock market year in 2024. If we really do see a soft landing and some additional interest rate cuts from both the Fed and the ECB, this should give the markets a further tailwind. Of course, you have to bear in mind that November and December have already priced in a lot, 10% should be possible in any case.

I therefore see my assets at ~€300,000 at the end of 2024. This is mainly due to the lower investments I plan to make in 2024.

Overall, my savings rate will probably fall from €2,500-3,000 per month to "only" ~€2,000. This is mainly due to some private expenses that will be incurred in 2024.

With my China ETF, the last savings plan execution for this year is now complete - incidentally one of the investments that did not and is not running at all.

Portfolio update for December 2023 and the whole of 2023 will follow in the next few days.

Perhaps also interesting for some. I discovered today that you can use the Copilot app on Android for free. It can also be used to generate all kinds of pictures (my highlight so far was a fight between Pikachu and Darth Vader in Hogwarts 😂).

Especially for the days between Christmas and New Year's Eve, it's fun to try out the AI in this way.

Getquin rewinds - All that glitters is not gold ☄️

Now that the majority of the rewinds shared are performing really well and most of them are in the top 10% of the community, it's time to show the other side of the coin.

Even though my performance is supposedly better than 95% of the community, I would like to show the shit list of my portfolio here 😂

Please make some noise for:

Sea $SE (+2.3%) Match $MTCH (+4.16%) and Block $SQ (+3.97%) all of which have losses of ~50-70%.

But even a Pfizer $PFE (+1.18%) at the moment I would prefer to assign Waste Management $WM (+1.93%) from @Simpson for recycling 😂

The purchase of Hershey $HSY (+1.4%) has not paid off so far - but I'm convinced in the long term and simply started the savings plan at the wrong time in the middle of the year. Sartorius $SRT3 (-0.27%) continues to suffer from the normalization after Corona and China in general is simply not doing well, which is reflected in my China ETF $MCHS (+0.13%) shows.

With Teladoc $TDOC (+16.57%) and BASF $BAS (-1.23%) I have already sold two more pipe-drawers this year.

Depot review August 2023 - The rainy summer 2023 is coming to an end, in the depot as well as in nature everything green. Will a red September follow?

The August 2023 was like the summer in general a rather mixed affair.

The portfolio stood in between at almost -5%, to then close at the end virtually unchanged

In August, my portfolio closed with -0,3% virtually unchanged. In contrast to August 2022 with -2.4% but a better development.

In the current year, my performance is currently +17,4% and thus still above my benchmark (MSCI World +14.8%).

In August, NVIDIA again $NVDA performed extremely strong with +7% / + 800€. In percentage terms, however, some stocks performed even stronger in August, right at the top with +18% each Novo Nordisk $NOVO B and Atlassian $TEAM (+3.93%)

On the losing side, there were a few classics in August with, among others. $SE (+2.3%) and Block $SQ (+3.97%) - But both rather smaller positions. In addition, the uncertainties around China have also weighed on my China ETF $MCHS (+0.13%) burdened with about 500€ price losses.

In total, there are almost 700€ price losses in August.

1,200€ were invested by me net, which results in a small absolute increase of just over 600€.

In total, my portfolio still stands at ~226.000€. This corresponds to an absolute increase of ~48.000€. in the current year 2023. ~31.000€ come from price increases, ~1.600€ from dividends / interest and ~15.000€ from additional investments.

Thus, there is still a shortfall of ~€6,000 in price gains to make up for the ~€38,000 in price losses from 2022.

Dividend:

• The dividend comparison to the previous year is slightly more difficult this month, as Unilever distributed in August instead of September as usual and my Japan ETF will distribute in September instead of August.
• Therefore the dividend is +56% above the previous year. Without the Unilever dividend, it would be about +19% and +40%, respectively, if my Japan ETF had paid out in August as before
• In the current year, dividends are up +22% after 6 months over the first 8 months of 2022 at ~€1,500

September is now the worst of all stock market months and also the only one with a long-term average negative performance.

In the appendix you will find an analysis of the S&P 500 development from 1928 to 2022. While the months July, December, January and April belong to the best, the S&P 500 loses ~1% in September on a long term average..

Various studies have already looked into this, but have not found any real reasons for this underperformance.

So at least statistically nothing stands in the way of a slight correction in September - Also in my portfolio all 3 September since 2020 were negative, so let's see what this September will bring.

Depot review May 2023 - Sell in May and... oh shit 🚀🚀🚀

"Sell in May and go away" - One of the most famous stock market sayings par excellence and following it would have cost me a lot of money this year.

In the depot May was with +4,0% the strongest month after January. Compared to May 2022 with -5.1% an extreme difference.

In the current year, my performance is currently +13,1% and thus significantly above my benchmark (MSCI World +9.6%).

Not surprisingly, of course, extremely strongly driven by NVIDIA $NVDA (+1.51%) with +41% / + 2.700€. This accounts for almost one third of the price gains in May. Also strong Alphabet $GOOG (-4.95%) and Palo Alto Networks $PANW (+7.32%)

On the losing side, in May it was mainly Starbucks $SBUX (+2.42%) Nike $NKE (+3.29%) and Sartorius $SRT (-1.35%)

In total my portfolio stands at over 210.000€ even though I only broke the 200,000€ barrier in April.

Dividend:

• Dividend +16% compared to prior year
• Current year dividends are +32% above first 5 months 2022 after 5 months

So in total I have over 35% of the index covered in my portfolio anyway. In addition, the Samsung share $005930 with a share of 5-6% in the Emerging Markets Index on my watchlist.

In the next month I will probably follow the current trend and try with an Itochu $ITC in the savings plan to increase my Japan share a little.

Depot review April 2023 - The 200k cracked, at the end of the month again just under it

April is over and with it already a third of the year 2023 - madness, how fast time flies.

In the depot, April was the first negative month in 2023 with -0,7%. Compared to April 2022 with -4.8% the month was nevertheless significantly better.

(Fun Fact: April is generally considered to be the best month on the stock market).

Nevertheless, I was able to break the 200k mark for the first time in April after almost 10 years on the stock market. At the end of the month the portfolio closes nevertheless scarcely under it with 199,5k.

In the current year my current performance is +8,3% and thus above my benchmark (MSCI World +6%).

Dividend:

• Dividend +50% compared to the previous year - However, Sartorius $SRT (-1.35%) paid out in March last year, this year in April.
• "Adjusted" for the Sartorius dividend, distributions were nevertheless +33 +33% above the previous year
