I've been looking into quantum computing for some time now and wonder if this might be one of the more interesting technological developments to emerge over the next five to ten years.
Companies like IBM $IBM (+1,05%) , Google $GOOGL (-0,44%), IonQ $IONQ (+0,66%) and Quantinuum $QNT (+3,38%) are investing heavily in the development of powerful quantum computers. Much of this is still in the research phase and a long way off, but the potential applications are enormous.
What I find particularly exciting isn’t just the question of who will ultimately build the best quantum computer. I’m also interested in the companies that could profit from the necessary infrastructure. For example, Keysight $KEYS (+1,73%) with its measurement and control technology.
Another area is quantum security. If today’s encryption methods eventually need to be replaced by quantum-secure technologies, companies like NXP $NXPI (+0,55%) , Infineon $IFX (-2,59%) or Thales $HO (+1,04%) could benefit. And possibly much sooner than quantum computers are deployed commercially on a large scale.
That’s why I’m currently looking at the WisdomTree Quantum Computing UCITS ETF $WQTM (-0,03%)
(IE000W8WMSL2) and am considering building a small long-term position.
Of course, I’m aware that a lot of future potential is already priced into this sector. Many of the specialized companies are barely making any money so far or are posting heavy losses.
On the other hand, I wonder if we aren’t actually at the very beginning of a development that could have a completely different economic significance in ten years.
I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on this.
Is quantum computing already an investment theme for you, or is it still too much hype?
Do you tend to focus on individual companies, their suppliers, or a broadly diversified ETF?
And most importantly: Which companies do you think could actually make money from this in the long term?
