MRNA - Will the new type of vaccine revolutionize the fight against cancer?

During the coronavirus pandemic, mRNA technology has impressively demonstrated how fast modern science can work.

The Artikel has sparked my interest again, perhaps an investment in this area will make sense in the coming years and not just be a gamble...

The pharmaceutical and biotech industry now seems to be focusing heavily on mRNA vaccines against cancer. For those who have never really understood how this type of vaccination works; the cure version at the end in the picture :)

Companies like BioNTech, CureVac and Moderna are currently leading the development:

$BNTX (+6.32%) , known for the first mRNA corona vaccine, is working intensively on the development of over 20 clinical programs against cancer. Some candidates are already in fortgeschrittenen Phasen and could be on the market by 2026

$MRNA (+4.46%) is currently in the lead with an mRNA vaccine against malignant melanoma. Approval could come even earlier than for BioNTech, more details also hier.

$CVAC (+3.39%) plans to bring its own mRNA cancer vaccines to market by 2028. A new partnership with the MD Anderson Cancer Center shows the potential for future innovations.

After the previous day's losses, Europe's stock markets recovered strongly on Wednesday. The gained 1.2 percent to 18,375 points. Statements made by US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell the previous day at a conference in Portugal provided further support. Rheinmetall $RHM (+1.35%) gained 4.8 percent. The armaments group wants to cooperate with the Italian armaments group Leonardo in the further development of land defense systems. The two companies want to develop Rheinmetall's new main battle tank (Panther) and the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle and then commercialize them. The project could have a volume of up to 20 billion euros. A buy recommendation from Morgan Stanley also had a supportive effect.

In the Munich Wirecard-trial has reached a milestone after more than a year and a half: the third defendant, ex-accountant Stephan von Erffa, who has remained silent since the start of the trial in December 2022, will testify to the charges for the first time on July 17. The biotech company is selling the rights to mRNA vaccine candidates to GSK and will receive an upfront payment of 400 million euros. +++ Curevac sues BioNtech and a possible reason:+++

According to concurring reports, Curevac has filed a patent infringement lawsuit with the relevant district court in Düsseldorf, Germany [see sources 1&2 below].

The lawsuit claims "intellectual property rights based on two decades of pioneering work in the field of mRNA technology." in connection with BioNTech and Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine.

The text of the statement from Curvac is about, among other things, "several inventions considered essential to the design and development of the vaccine."

The goal of the lawsuit, however, is not to seek an injunction or take steps against "production, sale or distribution," according to Curevac.

So what now might be the request of the barely one-quarter state-owned company (23% BRD stake in the company)?

It's probably about money. Because here, too, Curevac makes it clear: "fair remuneration" is the main concern of the company from Tübingen.

Decisive for the hopeless case of a vaccine manufacturer without a vaccine might be the interesting remark on my part about the financing of the company:

Because if you follow the company's figures and their financing rounds, you quickly realize that the money for financing this loss-making company is slowly but surely running out.

Accompanied by a cash burn of around 300-310 million euros per quarter, money is likely to run out in the second half of the year at the latest, i.e. around fall 2022. The company's market capitalization can no longer help either, having fallen from 20 billion euros in April 2021 to 4 billion euros in January 2022.

Conclusion:

Curevac needs money. And since it can neither get this commercially, nor presumably through further sufficient financing rounds, it has to sue.

Unfortunately, the example of Curevac proves to me once again the overcurrent action of our politicians, who wanted to protect a company at all costs (Trump wanted to acquire the company for the USA according to rumors at the time) without having any knowledge of the matter and the state of development.

The costs will be borne by the taxpayers in the end, possibly the German government will take over the guarantee in case of a failure of further financing.

And what should be the learning effect for investors?

Well, apart from the fact that hype stocks should never be overrated, the example of Curevac should be a warning for all those who believe that first-movers always promise success. Far too often, companies that were first to market (in this case with m-RNA technology) have lost out in the end.

Do you think something will come again?

So just went to the 3:30pm drop some Curevac leverage. Am not sure yet how good I think.

Actually I wanted to stop after I have made with leverage from 300€ 2k€ only to end up again from here at 700€....

Only was by the invitation of a friend suddenly again money on my TR account... Since I was just weak against gambling.

Thought me so if the nothing more hinbekommen no matter and if yet could be from the little referral money but still ne decent sum. And got a tip from the Netherlands that this could still be what.

But what do you think? Stupid idea, because you do not lever? Or stupid idea because you would have something better in store (what?). Or does this have potential?

Today a post about my worst investment (so far): CureVac.

What is/makes CureVac?

Founded in 2000, CureVac is the first company in the world to research mRNA technology for the treatment of disease and the production of vaccines [1]. Thus, even after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, CureVac was one of the first companies to announce the development of an mRNA-based vaccine against Covid-19.

Why did I invest in CureVac about a year ago?

The investment had several reasons for me. First, I became aware of CureVac due to the hype, which was generated, among other things, by the fact that Donald Trump was interested in exclusive rights to CureVac's vaccine and offered $1 billion for it [2].

Subsequently, the German government also invested 300 million euros [3] to win CureVac over.

Due to the hype generated, the share price naturally moved accordingly. It went from around $50-60 to highs of around $133. Somewhere in between (around $100) the famous FOMO (Fear of missing out) kicked in for me. I had done enough research to know that the Corona vaccine would be needed over the next months and years and assumed that CureVac would become one of the big players in this space.

An additional buying argument came out of emotional reasons (not good): I myself come from the Stuttgart region, so CureVac's headquarters in Tübingen are not far away. I liked the idea of owning shares in an AG from the surrounding area that potentially saves the world (to put it quite exaggeratedly).

Why did it all go to shit?

Unlike other companies that have developed or are developing mRNA-based vaccines against Covid-19, CureVac decided to use unmodified mRNA whereas other companies (Biontech, Moderna) relied on modified mRNA [4].

I don't want to go into the exact differences (you can read about them quite well in [4]), since I am not a specialist myself, but the numbers speak for themselves:

Biontech: 95% efficacy rate [5].

Moderna: 85% efficacy rate [5]

CureVac: 47% efficacy rate [5]

The data are certainly different in today's world after the appearance of many different variants, but one can clearly see the difference between the CureVac vaccine and that of other mRNA-based vaccines.

What learning do I draw from this?

Unfortunately, hype around a stock, fear of missing out and emotional reasons are all not good investment advisors or buying arguments and should be excluded from investments as much as possible.

In addition, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry is in many cases very speculative and often a single approval of a drug or vaccine can decide the ups or downs on the stock market.

This was exactly the case with CureVac, as the entire narrative surrounding the company was based on the Covid-19 vaccine and its approval.

Will I make such a mistake again in the future?

Here I would very much like to answer no, but I am a very honest person and therefore can only answer in the affirmative.

Of course, I try to keep the upper hand against hype, FOMO or other emotions when investing, but man is simply an emotional being and the effects that such phenomena have on us, one will probably never be able to completely hide (at least that applies to me).

Is there hope for CureVac?

In any case, CureVac continues to work briskly on their second generation vaccine, which will probably also be adapted for the currently prevailing omicron variant (currently in preclinical development).

Another long-term goal (as with Biontech) is to be able to cure cancer with the help of mRNA technology [6].

Tesla Automation (a subsidiary of Tesla - formerly Grohmann Engineering and then Tesla Grohmann Automation) is also working on an mRNA printer called The RNA Printer®, which could be found in many hospitals etc. in the future and produce the appropriate vaccine at the push of a button in order to be able to react to disease outbreaks [7].

Whether all this justifies the current valuation or an even higher valuation in the future is more than questionable.

In any case, I will keep my shares (current status: approx. -82%). The hope to get out of it again with profit is meanwhile very small (understandably). However, the shares are now more of a reminder in my portfolio - a kind of daily reminder that you don't have to take every hype and that it's better to keep your hands off some things.

Curevac ( $CVAC (+3.39%) ) - The biotech company's third-quarter sales rose 463 percent year over year to €29.3 million. The increase in sales is mainly due to cooperations with the British pharmaceutical group GlaxoSmithKline ( $GSK ), according to the Tübingen-based company. However, Curevac's operating loss increased compared to the same period of the previous year from 36.7 million euros to 143.1 million euros. This was reportedly due to high research and development costs for its own vaccine candidate Covid-19.

Alibaba ( $2RR (-0.72%) ) - On Thursday, no clear trend could be observed on the Asian stock exchanges. In Japan, the Topix and the 225-stock Nikkei index rose 0.4 percent. The index of leading companies in Shanghai and Shenzen also gained 0.2 percent. In contrast, the flagship Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong lost 1.8 percent as disappointing figures from Chinese tech giant Alibaba weighed heavily on the index. Japan's inflation data showed consumer prices rose 0.1 percent in October, in line with prior expectations.

Nvidia ( $NVDA (+1.51%) ) - Yesterday, after the close of trading, NVIDIA stock rose sharply, driven by strong demand. In the past quarter, NVIDIA reported an 84% increase in earnings to $2.46 billion. NVIDIA's technology is used in artificial intelligence applications, graphics cards, and data center chips, among others. Despite the reservations expressed by competition authorities, NVIDIA is studying the proposed purchase of the British designer of chips "Arm", whose technology is used in almost all smartphones. By comparison, only 35 countries intend to develop a CBDC by 2020.

Curevac ($CVAC (+3.39%)) - The biotech company's third-quarter revenue increased 463 percent year-over-year to 29.3 million euros. The increase in revenue was mainly due to collaborations with British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline ($GSK), the Tuebingen-based company said. However, Curevac's operating loss increased from 36.7 million euros to 143.1 million euros compared to the same period last year. This was due to high research and development costs for the company's own Covid-19 vaccine candidate, it said.

Alibaba ($2RR (-0.72%)) - There was no clear trend on the Asian stock markets on Thursday. In Japan, the Topix and the 225-stock Nikkei index gained 0.4 percent. The index of the most important companies in Shanghai and Shenzen could also gain 0.2 percent. Hong Kong's benchmark Hang Seng index, however, lost 1.8 percent as disappointing figures from Chinese tech giant Alibaba weighed heavily on the index. Inflation data from Japan showed consumer price inflation rose 0.1 percent in October, in line with advance expectations.

U.S. Constitution - The online group "ConstitutionDAO" planned to buy the last privately owned edition of the U.S. Constitution at a public auction at Sotheby's on Thursday and failed. Instead, the edition was bought at auction by an unknown bidder for $41 million. Project participants began banding together as a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) just a week ago to pool funds for the auction. Through Juicebox, more than $49 million in Ethereum donations ($ETH (+8.98%)) was collected. In return, the 17,437 supporters received governance tokens called PEOPLE, which were not intended to represent fractional ownership, but rather to allow token owners to decide on proposals for structure, governance, and operational direction.
