Hello everyone,

At the beginning of 2024, I started to include gold in my portfolio and opted for EUWAX Gold II
$EWG2 (+0%) in the process.

The diversification was particularly important to me in order to make myself less dependent on fluctuations in the stock market and global political events and to ensure long-term value retention.

For me, this is a sensible building block in any portfolio.

For me, diversification now also includes cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin
$BTC (+3.52%) and Ethereum
$ETH (+9.53%)which have also made a significant contribution to increasing my portfolio.

Since the beginning of the year gold an impressive increase in value of almost 30 % achieved.

For me, gold and cryptocurrencies remain a long-term investment.

Diversification ⚙️

This always raises the question for me:

How much gold in a portfolio actually makes sense?

There are different strategies for this, which depend heavily on the individual investment strategy, risk appetite and market conditions.

Many experts, investment banks and investment advisors recommend a gold share of around 5-10 % of the portfolio.

Strategies for the ideal gold weighting in the portfolio

1. classic diversification (5-10%)

One allocation of 5-10 % in gold is considered a proven approach to diversify a portfolio.

(Allocation refers to the strategic distribution of assets across asset classes).

-Protection against systematic risks:

Gold often moves in the opposite direction to equities and bonds. In times of crisis, gold remains stable or increases in value.

-Limited opportunity costs:

A moderate proportion of gold hardly affects the growth potential of the portfolio, as the majority is invested in higher-yielding asset classes such as equities or bonds.

-Global hedging:

Gold not only protects against local market risks, but also against global uncertainties such as geopolitical tensions or economic crises.

Example of a balanced portfolio:

-55 % equities and ETFs

-30% bonds

-10% gold

-5% cryptocurrencies

2. defensive strategy (10-20 %)

A gold share of 10-20 % is particularly suitable for conservative investors or in times of heightened uncertainty.

-Focus on value preservation:

Gold offers stability in turbulent market phases or when risk appetite is low.

-Hedging against specific risks: A higher proportion of gold makes sense, particularly in the event of high inflation, currency devaluations or geopolitical conflicts.

Example of a defensive portfolio:

-40 % bonds

-30% equities and ETFs

-20% gold

-10% other real assets (e.g. real estate funds)

3. tactical allocation

A flexible, tactical allocation can make sense for experienced investors.

-Anti-cyclical investing:

Gold holdings are increased when risks (e.g. fears of recession) increase and reduced when markets are stable.

-Taking advantage of market cycles:

Active management makes it possible to benefit from fluctuations in the gold price.

Example:

-Stable times: 5 % gold

-In times of crisis: up to 15 % gold

Important: This strategy requires in-depth market knowledge and continuous monitoring of the economic situation and a quicker response.

Forms of gold investment

-#1 Physical gold (coins, bars): Direct control and safekeeping, but involves storage costs e.g. for a safe deposit box.

I'm currently looking for an ETC for gold. So far I've mostly focused on $WGLD (+0.9%) and $EWG2 (+0%) so far. Unfortunately, my custody account offers me no fee advantage with either option. In addition, the $WGLD (+0.9%) seems to allow physical delivery of the gold in 1g denominations but probably has a TER of 0.16%. The $EWG2 (+0%) only allows delivery in 1g through additional fees. To my questions:

• How can the $EWG2 (+0%) have no fees, how do they earn money?
• In addition, bearer bonds are not subject to deposit protection. I am therefore wondering what the insolvency risks could be, since everything is collateralized with gold anyway. Robbery of the gold?
• What is the difference between EUWAX Gold I and EUWAX Gold II?

Brief introduction: I was very undecided about my strategy for a relatively long time and have rethought it back and forth several times and have now finally set up my portfolio (in its current form only this year) with a strategy that lets me sleep peacefully and that I hope will lead to a successful future stock market life. My strategy is also designed so that I have to worry as little as possible about rebalancing and actively do not have to worry about it. The aim of the portfolio is long-term wealth accumulation (10 years+).

About me: 34 years old, married, now 2 children, live in rented accommodation, work in middle management at a private bank in Hamburg, savings rate €1,000 per month, sufficient nest egg available and not tracked here

Strategy: I recently made a final decision in favor of an ETF as the core of my portfolio. The choice fell on the $SPYI (+0.32%) as it tracks large, mid and small caps from industrialized and emerging markets. The ETF should make up 60% of my portfolio in the target allocation. I invest €600 a month in the ETF from my savings installment.

In addition to the ETF, I hold and save monthly $BTC (+3.52%) (physical and ETP $WBIT (+3.16%)) and $WGLD (+0.9%) (also gold physically $965515 (+0.71%) ) with €200 each. The target allocation for both BTC and gold is 20% each.

I have opted for $WGLD (+0.9%) because $EWG2 (+0%) is unfortunately not eligible for a savings plan at ING and $WGLD (+0.9%) is also tax-free after 1 year and has a delivery option. My position in physical gold will not be expanded any further.

$WBIT (+3.16%) I deliberately chose this savings plan because it is NOT tax-free after one year (optimization of the tax-free allowance through sales, is not saved, my savings plan only runs on real gold). $BTC (+3.52%) ).

All in all, I hope that the portfolio allocation will optimize returns while at the same time minimizing drawdowns.
