Part 4 of 5: During part 1 and 2 were my apprenticeship years on the stock exchange, Part Part 3 highlighted the very positive years 2019-2021. In part 4 it is now the turn of 2022 and 2023. Part 5 will then conclude my investor story (so far) and shed light on 2024.

2021 was an extremely positive year with a performance of over 30% and assets of almost €200,000 at the end of the year.

However, from mid-2021 onwards, you could already sense that something was slowly changing. Inflation has picked up significantly worldwide. The main reasons for this are the global supply chain problems and the massive money printing by the central banks. Both are direct consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.

The year 2022 - inflation & interest rate turnaround

The year 2022 began with a significant setback in January. My portfolio was down 8% in January. There was a lot of unrest on the markets, inflation was still far too high and it was not clear how much the Fed would raise interest rates. In addition, there were fears that Russia could invade Ukraine - four weeks later this was unfortunately a sad certainty.

Uncertainty - something that the markets do not like at all. In addition to inflation, the war in Ukraine suddenly created another risk: what impact will the war and the sanctions have on global supply chains, which are still under heavy strain? Will this

inflation even further and thus put even more pressure on the central banks?

The stock market was therefore under fire from all sides:

• Supply chains are weighing on companies
• Higher interest rates lead to higher interest costs for companies
• Higher inflation increases salary and purchasing costs, while sales fall as consumers (have to) save more
• Suddenly, call money accounts and bonds become more interesting again and there are alternatives to shares (TINA = there is no alternative was therefore off the table)

Above all tech and growth stocks suffered from further problems:

Many growth companies were not yet profitable, but could borrow money cheaply from anywhere - profits were irrelevant as long as sales were growing. By 2022, this had changed and unprofitable companies were even shunned. Another reason is the valuation of future profits. If inflation is 0%, profits will be worth the same in five years' time as they are today. If inflation is 5%, I have to discount the profit in five years at 5% and suddenly the profit in five years is worth much less in real terms.

If I invest in my portfolio 2022 there are only a few winners:

At the top were defense companies like Lockheed Martin $LMT (-0.22%)

and Northrop Grumman $NOC (-0.09%) . This was followed by safe-haven stocks like Pepsi $PEP (-0.09%)
Unilever $ULVR (-0.69%) or Johnson & Johnson $JNJ (+0.06%) Also Encavis $ECV was also in demand as an electricity producer due to the lack of gas from Russia.

At the bottom was everything to do with tech had to do with technology. The hardest hit were the unprofitable tech companies like Teladoc Health $TDOC (-0.18%) or Match Group $MTCH (+0.16%) caught - both with 70% losses each.

But also Meta $META (-0.73%)
had price losses of 60%! The reason was not only the general situation but also the lack of faith in the Metaverseso that Meta also had an internal problem. In 2022, Meta was already counted as the next GE or IBM.

But also NVIDIA
$NVDA (-1.49%) also lost -45% got a good beating. Microsoft $MSFT (-0.74%)
Apple $AAPL (+1.1%) and Alphabet $GOOG (+1.49%) saw their share prices fall by -20 to -35% were also unable to escape.

What has me in the year 2022 keep going in 2022?

On the one hand, the thought that I can now buy many top companies much more cheaply, but on the other hand also the dividends. My dividends increased by almost 50% in 2022 compared to 2021 and at the end of the year I had dividends of over €1,800.

That's an average of €150 per month and that's with dividend growth companies and not high-dividend ETFs or similar.

Nevertheless, the statement at the end of the year didn't exactly look rosy. Having started with €193,000, at the end of 2022 the portfolio only stood at 178.000€ even though I had over 30.000€ invested. Price losses of ~€45,000 hit like a bomb.

After another slap in the face in December 2022 with -5%, everything should suddenly be forgotten at the turn of the year.

The year 2023 - Inflation, high interest rates? Never mind, we have AI!

On November 30, 2022, the world ChatGPT and since then we have been in an AI rallythat still has no end in sight at the end of 2024. The performance of the portfolio has turned 180 degrees. Everything that was at the top in 2022, such as pharma or consumer staples (Procter & Gamble, Pepsi,...) was suddenly at the bottom.

Suddenly at the top were NVIDIA and Meta with almost +200%.

With Crowdstrike, Salesforce and Palo Alto Networks there were

another three doublers in the portfolio. One Apple was with +40% already

rather a low performer.

The stock market got used to the normalized interest rate environment, supply chains were relatively intact again and inflation began to fall. All in all, a positive environment for the stock market, which was driven back up by a megatrend (artificial intelligence).

On the home stretch in December 2023, my portfolio was just about able to make up for all the price losses from 2022. In addition to price gains of ~€45,000, I also invested another ~€30,000, so that my portfolio increased by ~€75,000 in absolute terms.

My portfolio ended the year at ~178.000€ and at just over 250.000€ ended the year.

The dividends have also continued to rise nicely - from 1.900€

to almost 2.400€ upwards.

The year 2024 continued to be characterized by AI, but also by falling interest rates and some political upheavals (Trump, traffic lights out,...).

The portfolio continued to perform extremely well in 2024, although the savings rate was lower than in previous years due to a number of private issues. Nevertheless, for the first time the 300.000€ in the portfolio was to be significantly exceeded.

(Delayed) portfolio review October 2024 - A month with 5 share sales and one ETF sale

Even though October was just over two weeks ago, it feels like a different time. Germany still had an (unspeakable) traffic light government, in America the race for the White House was still open and a phone call between Scholz and Putin was unthinkable.

And even though November has been much more exciting on the stock market than October so far, October was a month of major changes from a personal perspective.

Apart from stock market investments, we are slowly starting to think about building a house. As a result, for the first time in a long time I made several sales in my portfolio and therefore also cleared out a little.

Previously this year, there were only 2 sales in my portfolio: at NVIDIA I took my stake out in February and since then have only let the profits run. In addition, in March I had Encavis after the takeover bid.

There were a total of 6 sales in October. For just under €7,000 I sold my China ETF which has recovered well over the last few months.

On the equity side, I have now sold most of the Corona Hype stocks and Match, Atlassian, Shopify and Block have been sold. In addition, I have also Pfizer sold. That was another €8,000, leaving only Sea from the Corona hype times, where I will remain invested for the time being, as it covers a completely different region geographically with Southeast Asia.

My savings quota will therefore be significantly reduced for the time being due to the upcoming house building project. From just under €1,500 to €2,000, it will only be €500-600 per month for the time being

Monthly view:

In total, October was +1,7%. This corresponds to price gains of ~5.000€.

The MSCI World (benchmark) was +0.9% and the S&P500 +1.5%

Winners & losers:

A look at the winners and losers is part of the usual picture:

On the winning side is, as so often NVIDIA is at the top with almost €3,000 in share price gains. It is followed by TSMC, Bitcoin, Alphabet and Palo Alto Networks with gains of €900-1,000 each.

On the loser side above all ASML made its contribution with price losses of almost €1,400. This was followed by Bechtle, Thermo Fisher, LVMH and Nike a broader mix of stocks that have not necessarily performed well recently. Nevertheless, all 5 loser stocks are still part of my savings plans.

The performance-neutral movements in October were just under €4,600. The sales proceeds are all still in cash accounts at the moment, so they have not yet flowed out of the assets. There will be a larger dip here at some point in the future.

Current year:

My performance in the current year is +27,5% and thus above my benchmark, the MSCI World with 23.7%.

In total, my portfolio currently stands at ~331.000€. This corresponds to an absolute growth of ~€79,000 in the current year 2023. ~53.000€ of this comes from price gains, ~3.000€ from dividends / interest and ~22.000€ from additional investments.

Dividend:

• Dividends in October were 32% above the previous year at ~€150
• TSMC is in the lead with a (gross) dividend of €30 every 3 months. TSMC has already raised the dividend for next year by 30% again
• In the current year, the dividends after 10 months are +25% over the first 9 months of 2023 at ~2.350€

Target 2024:

My goal for this year is to reach €300,000 in my portfolio. Due to the extremely positive market development in the current year, my portfolio already stands at ~€331,000 at the end of October.

As of mid-November and thanks to the Trump rally, my portfolio is currently approaching €350,000 and was even slightly above this level a few days ago. However, with a larger cash portion that will sooner or later flow into financing as equity.

Getquin rewinds - All that glitters is not gold ☄️

Now that the majority of the rewinds shared are performing really well and most of them are in the top 10% of the community, it's time to show the other side of the coin.

Even though my performance is supposedly better than 95% of the community, I would like to show the shit list of my portfolio here 😂

Please make some noise for:

Sea $SE (-0.3%) Match $MTCH (+0.16%) and Block $SQ (+0.04%) all of which have losses of ~50-70%.

But even a Pfizer $PFE (-0.07%) at the moment I would prefer to assign Waste Management $WM (-0.02%) from @Simpson for recycling 😂

The purchase of Hershey $HSY (+1.14%) has not paid off so far - but I'm convinced in the long term and simply started the savings plan at the wrong time in the middle of the year. Sartorius $SRT3 (+2.48%) continues to suffer from the normalization after Corona and China in general is simply not doing well, which is reflected in my China ETF $MCHS (+0.79%) shows.

With Teladoc $TDOC (-0.18%) and BASF $BAS (+0.02%) I have already sold two more pipe-drawers this year.

Year in review & outlook 2022: Was it good? Was it bad? Or somehow a little bit of everything?

The year 2022 is my 9th year in the stock market and it was definitely not an easy year. Between inflation, war, tech crash and energy shortages, I had to maneuver my portfolio.

And yes, in the process, I met my goal (200k by the end of the year) this year not reached.

Depending on how the remaining days go, I will be missing something between 10 & 20k.

So we start with the bad news:

• Target 200k not reached
• Annual performance is at approx. -15%
• My performance was always rather above the market in the last years, this year I could not not keep up with the market
• Among other things, this was of course due to a high proportion of tech (both big and small tech).
• In addition, in 2021, I was caught by Crypto spoiled (especially by the Crypto.com Coin), here unfortunately many book profits have dissolved again
• The bottom line is that for 2022 after many years once again a stock market year with losses at the end

-> My worst investments in 2022 were:

• Match
  $MTCH (+0.16%) Tinder, unfortunately, burned up more like a hot coal this year -> -62%
• Meta Platforms $META (-0.73%) Probably doesn't need much to say about it -> -59%
• Ethereum $ETH (-2.72%) Overall, I'm still at a doubling though -> -54%
• Shopify $SHOP (+0.48%) -> -54%
• Atlassian
  $TEAM (-0.08%) -> -49%

It feels like the bad news outweighs the bad news after a year like 2022.

However, if you take a closer look, you can easily refute that. Therefore, here is my (significantly longer list) of good news:

• First, the most important: Corona is over! Yes, Lauterbach sees it differently for sure, but for me in my life it doesn't matter anymore. Whether vacation, going out to eat or to the movies. I feel free again.
• This year I bought a condominium as an investment. I was still able to secure the financing at a super favorable interest rate of just over 1%. Here I expect another boost for my personal finances
• At work I have an important promotion received
• In total I could invest this year invest over 30,000 euros this year
• My dividends could almost break the 2,000 euros this yearthat is a jump of almost +60% compared to 2021
• In addition, there were also many other, private highlight this year

-> My best invests in 2022 were:

• Lockheed Martin
  $LMT (-0.22%) For sure due to sad circumstances, nevertheless this year my best invest -> +49%
• Amgen $AMGN (-0.31%) Health was the driver in my portfolio this year -> +29%
• Encavis $ECV Profits as a renewable energy producer massively from the current upheavals -> +18%
• Pepsi $PEP (-0.09%) Safety was trump this year, that's why even a boring like Pepsi can be found here -> +17%
• Johnson & Johnson $JNJ (+0.06%) And another boring one from the health care sector -> +13%

Outlook 2023:

So what's next for the new year?

• As soon as the condominium is ready for occupancy, I hope for reliable rental income and thereby a 3rd source of income besides my salary and dividends.
• The 200.000 Euro in the first quarter of 2023.
• By the end of 2023, the quarter of a million is the (ambitious) target. For this purpose, I consider my total (net) assets including the condominium minus debts.
• To reach the goal, a positive stock market development is important in any case. For this I assume an positive stock market year and an average return of 6-7%. on the stock market.
• My pure capital assets I would like to increase in the next year to approx. 220,000 Euro (cash, securities, crypto, BAV,...)

I will not change too much in my portfolio in the coming year. With $META (-0.73%) and Atlassian $TEAM 2 tech stocks will leave my savings plans, but will continue to be held in the portfolio.

Probably the positions of Deere $DE (-0.39%) and Eli Lilly $LLY (-0.42%) will be taken over.

BASF $BAS (+0.02%) and Teladoc $TDOC (-0.18%) are still on the sell list. However, these are small positions, so I'm waiting for better prices here (especially with BASF, Teladoc is only a few hundred euros, I'll just leave that).
