F-35, Patriot, HIMARS & Co: Macron openly advises Europe against buying US armaments

It seems like my post about Europas F-35-Sicherheitsdilemma could not have come at a better time:

Dependence on US armaments is increasingly perceived as a risk factor for Europe's military and security sovereignty and is now being publicly addressed at the highest political level faster than I would have expected.

French President Emmanuel Macron

President of France Emmanuel Macron has made it clear in an interview with Le Parisien that he is critical of Europe's purchase and use of US armaments and proposed replacing them with European alternatives.

Macron was also quite clear: "Those who buy Patriot systems should be offered the next generation of the Franco-Italian SAMP/T. Those who buy F-35s should be offered the Rafale fighter aircraft."

His main concern is greater strategic autonomy for Europe:

Macron is thus sending a clear signal for more European cooperation in the defense sector and against an excessive focus on US technology.

Macron is of course completely altruistic and wants to sell the Rafale.

@marda304 Off topic, because the Rafale is simply the best fighter aircraft manufactured in Europe.
Who doesn't want the best?

@RaphGM I'm sure the others say the same about their jets

@marda304 And that's exactly why there are experts and facts. And apparently the Rafale is not so bad (I can't judge that)

@marda304 Well, Rafale are the only EU jets that can carry nuclear bombs, and the jets are designed more for ground attacks than the Eurofighters. Saab are great jets, nice and cheap, but they don't come close to either of the two jets mentioned above. The EU will need a combination of all of them, each jet has its own advantages

@xgreenyflo exactly the nuclear capability the EF 2000 does not even have in the UK... I think it comes down to the fact that especially countries like DE will HAVE to buy some Rafale in order to continue to have protection via France in the absence of US weapons

@user80d5e5c1ee934da2 exactly. Poland is also already in hot talks with France about whether they can station nuclear weapons in Poland. Rafale will be needed then too. Other countries will follow

I think just with the topic: Franz Atomwaffen... Germany will probably (have to) buy 3-5 Rafale (and want to)

Well, Emmanuel Macron likes not to think before he says something. I don't see the Atlantic partnership going completely down the drain. Otherwise, you could bet on exactly how long it will take for the Lockheed-Martin board of directors to stand on Donald Trump's mat and ask him what possessed him to lose a billion-euro order because of him (not counting all the additional costs of the joint venture with Rheinmetall that is being set up).

In my opinion, it is therefore still wise to buy the best weapons systems available. Whether the Rafale will fit into the operational portfolio is another matter.

And on the other hand, people also tend to forget: Donald Trump talks a lot when the day is long and changes opinions like other underpants. He should be shown limits, yes. However, the United States still has a great interest in being active in Europe. At least that's what the Air Force is demonstrating by deploying more B52 squadrons to Europe. Despite all the prophecies of doom.

@StrahlemannLP It's not just about having the best equipment, which can be questioned anyway as the US doesn't offer the best equipment for every system, but rather about the freedom to do things yourself and decide for yourself.
