$CRUD (-0,3 %) It has reached $100; the price target has been met. I still see upside potential, but I'm worried about a "TACO move" from Trump.

• The U.S. and Iran resumed hostilities yesterday. The Americans carried out new attacks on Iranian targets, to which Iran responded with missile and drone strikes. Trump continues to threaten even harsher strikes, while Tehran has announced retaliation.

• The geopolitical catalyst, combined with technical analysis, indicates that $CRUD (-0,3 %) there is potential for a $100 move. Added to this are the CTAs, which hold a net long position of 70% of the 1-year high (104,573 net long contracts). Due to the technical breakout, short CTAs must cover their positions, thereby pushing the price even higher.

The price target for $CRUD (-0,3 %) is $100.

Summary

• U.S. oil reserves, including the SPR, are sufficient for only 43 days’ supply — the lowest level in decades.
• Record crack spreads due to supply bottlenecks in refined products.
• The Strait of Hormuz remains a key source of uncertainty for oil prices.
• Smaller oil buffers could increase pressure for U.S. fiscal measures and bond issuances.

Geopolitical Update

Direct military clashes have intensified again over the past 48 hours. According to CENTCOM, the U.S. carried out airstrikes on targets in Iran on the night of July 22. The strikes targeted military operations centers, aircraft hangars, drone depots, logistics facilities, and naval installations; according to U.S. officials, they were intended in particular to further weaken Iran’s military capabilities as well as its influence on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Donald Trump subsequently stated that the military operations were not yet complete and announced that he would order further attacks if necessary. Iran responded with missile and drone strikes on U.S. and allied targets in the region. Furthermore, the situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains tense.

Macro & Oil Market:

According to data from the $BAC (+0,11 %) total U.S. oil reserves plus the Strategic Petroleum Reserve are now only about 43 days away from reaching a 54-year low. The U.S. Gulf Coast (PADD 3) is currently bearing the brunt of the U.S. fuel supply. Refineries are operating at nearly 97% capacity, while gasoline inventories are below the seasonal average and the market for refined products remains tight. Since the U.S. is still in the driving season, PADD 3 is likely to remain under pressure in the coming weeks.

At the same time, crack spreads continue to widen. The 321 crack spread has now surpassed its 2008 high. For every 3 barrels $CRUD (-0,3 %) , the refinery can produce 2 barrels $B4N2 (+1,49 %) and 1 barrel $B4N1 (+0,85 %) . The gross margin has never been as high as it is now.

The large crack spreads are no surprise. Global inventories of gasoline, kerosene, and diesel in storage have plummeted massively due to the 2026 war, to approximately 170 million barrels.

The offline capacity of Russian refineries has skyrocketed—to about 4.6 million barrels per day. That’s roughly 68% of Russia’s total CDU capacity* is currently offline. Normally, outage and maintenance rates fluctuate seasonally between 20% and 35%. The reason for this is Ukrainian drone attacks on oil infrastructure.

China has also sharply restricted its exports abroad. In doing so, China is depriving the global market of an important source of refined petroleum products. Since China has frequently served as a major exporter during regional supply bottlenecks in recent years, the current restrictions are tightening supply and thus also contributing to the high crack spreads.

Analysis:

My assessment is that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz is unlikely to return to normal. In my view, Iran has emerged from the conflict in a strategically stronger position than before and thus has considerable leverage to disrupt shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz permanently or at least repeatedly. This uncertainty alone is likely to sustain a geopolitical risk premium on the oil price and increase CTA inflows.

At the same time, the U.S. government is under considerable political pressure ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. A persistently high oil price would directly translate into higher gasoline prices, which would further fuel inflation and erode consumer purchasing power.

Historically, the U.S. has been able to cushion oil price shocks in part by releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. However, this buffer is significantly smaller today. As previously mentioned, according to $BAC (+0,11 %) statistics, total U.S. crude oil supplies have fallen to a level sufficient for only 43 days. This is the lowest level in 45 years and is well below the long-term average of around 65 days. As a result, the Trump administration now has only limited access to one of its most important tools for stabilizing the market.

One option would be subsidies, which would lead to higher spending and also result in new government bond issuances. The question of demand is crucial here. Yields could come under further pressure, potentially triggering another round of the U.S. crisis. Watch Bonds!

*CDU capacity = How much crude oil can be converted into fuel per day.

Over the past 48 hours, the U.S. military has further escalated its strikes against Iran. Iran responded with new attacks on bases in the Gulf region. Among other targets, infrastructure in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain was hit. In addition, the U.S. is further strengthening its military presence in the Middle East by deploying fighter jets, aerial refueling aircraft, and military transport planes to the region. This suggests that the Americans are preparing for a military campaign lasting several more weeks. If $CRUD (-0,3 %) the situation would continue to escalate and provide further momentum.

Geopolitical Overview

Over the course of this week, the conflict between the U.S. and Iran has escalated significantly. Iran carried out missile and drone attacks on U.S. bases in several Gulf states. The U.S. responded by expanding its military strikes against Iranian military infrastructure. Shipping traffic in the Persian Gulf remains disrupted.

Oil Price

$CRUD (-0,3 %) is in a consolidation phase between 78.00 and 81.50 USD. Such phases with such narrow price ranges rarely last long. Generally speaking, we can expect oil to gain further upward momentum in the coming days. The EIA Weekly Petroleum Status Report paint a picture of a tight oil market. U.S. crude oil inventories fell by 1.7 million barrels—more than expected—while refineries operated at a capacity utilization rate of 96.2%. As mentioned in the article Commodities | Long Oil? , CTAs are now positioning themselves accordingly.

Summary

• Extreme short positioning in the oil market.
• The physical market remains tight despite weak sentiment.
• A bullish catalyst could trigger short covering and CTA buying.
• Asymmetric risk-reward ratio on the upside.

Catalyst

During the NATO summit in Ankara, Donald Trump strongly hinted that the Memorandum of Understanding has now come to an end. The MOU had already been struggling for weeks; the 14-point plan failed to gain traction, and now the show has come to an end. $BRNT (-0,66 %) reacted to the news with a 5% rise.

Managed Money

The Managed Money Short (MMS) statistics show that approximately 40% are short on oil, due to the ongoing talks, the ceasefire, and the rhetoric from the Trump administration. If news emerges that contradicts this strategic thinking (as the current news cycle suggests), these short positions must be closed out quickly. This pressure drives the price higher, which in turn forces more short sellers to cover their positions.

CTA Positioning

Current CTA positions also indicate a speculative opportunity. Both $BRNT (-0,66 %) as well as $CRUD (-0,3 %) show a net short level of about -5 billion USD. The CTAs are currently heavily overcrowded and are betting on falling prices. Both have simulated strong “Up Small” and “Up Big” potential. Should a catalyst drive the market higher, the simulations (Conditional Expected Flows) indicate a massive reallocation, as mentioned above. This would mean that, in the event of a price breakout, the CTAs would have to quickly close their short positions and switch to massive long purchases. If, on the other hand, the market continues to fall, there is potential for a “Down Big” move—that is, a further strengthening of short positions.

Physical Market

Additionally, one can focus on the crack spread. A high crack spread indicates that refined products, such as $B4N2 (+1,49 %) and $B4N1 (+0,85 %) relative to $BRNT (-0,66 %) are very expensive. This means that refineries are currently achieving exceptionally high gross margins. Such a spread typically arises when demand for products is high, product supply is tight, or refinery capacity is limited! Currently, refinery utilization stands at around 96%. At the same time, inventories of gasoline and other distillates have recently continued to decline and are below their 5-year average. The high refinery utilization rate therefore suggests that the market is not well-supplied. This is relevant for oil in that a persistently tight product market generally supports refineries’ demand for crude oil.

Trade Rationale

The market currently exhibits a rare combination of:

• extremely bearish positioning,
• a tight physical market, and
• potential geopolitical catalysts

Should the geopolitical situation continue to escalate or market sentiment shift, this could trigger a disproportionately strong upward momentum driven by short covering and CTA buying.

It will remain volatile, let's see how the markets open tomorrow? Will Trump's statements be increasingly ignored, or was last week's recovery rally even a bull trap?

We will see, there is still a lot to be posted before then.

Reading time: approx. 10 minutes

Many shares have performed very well recently. But where there has been nothing but upward movement for a long time, there will also be setbacks at some point. The market is currently reacting sensitively - even minor news leads to significant movements. One example is the recent concerns about the credit quality of smaller US regional banks, which triggered noticeable price losses yesterday and today.

This also raises the question of whether commodities could play a greater role again in the future - not as a substitute, but as part of a broader diversification. Especially in phases when stock markets react nervously, commodities can provide a tactical counterweight. This consideration gave rise to the idea of trading them systematically - not through emotion, but through rules.

The inspiration came from a natural gas trade that @Epi had presented. It was less exciting because of the result than because of the underlying dynamics. How can something like this be mapped using rules? When does momentum arise, when is a trend sustainable - and when does it end?

This is how the commodity rotation approach came about - an attempt to understand the movements of the commodity markets with technical discipline. The approach consistently relies on momentum: it does not aim to guess the bottom, but to accompany the strength. I have not yet tried it out in practice. But the structure is in place and it shows how a tactical, signal-based commodity approach can be constructed.

Commodities rarely move evenly. They move in waves, driven by demand, inventories, politics and currency. These movements are hardly predictable - but they are measurable. The approach therefore views the market as a rotating playing field: energy, metals, agriculture - capital constantly moves between these segments. The aim is not to predict where the next impulse will come from, but to invest where the trend is already visible. Only the strongest commodity counts - the rest is left out.

The universe comprises nine liquid underlying ETFs that can be traded via WisdomTree. Each represents its own cycle, together they form the entire spectrum of the global commodities market:

• $PHGP (+0,24 %) (Gold) - anchor of stability during periods of high uncertainty, typical counterbalance to risk assets.
• $PHAG (+0,96 %) (Silver) - more volatile than gold, with an industrial component, strong in bull phases.
• $CRUD (-0,3 %) (WTI oil) - central energy source, sensitive to OPEC policy and the economy.
• $NGAS (+1,74 %) (Natural gas) - highly volatile, weather and storage-driven, with high momentum in bottleneck phases.
• $COPA (+1,1 %) (copper) - leading indicator of the global economy, benefits from electrification and infrastructure.
• $PHPT (+2,38 %) (Platinum) - Precious metal with industrial significance, for example in the automotive and hydrogen industries.
• $WEAT (-0,65 %) (Wheat) - cyclical and weather-dependent, represents the agricultural sector.
• $CORN (+0,88 %) (Corn) - basic raw material for food and energy production, often parallel to oil and agricultural trends.
• $COFF (+1,74 %) (Coffee) - seasonal market with strong price fluctuations, influenced by climate and currencies.

Energy, industry, precious metals and agriculture are thus fully covered - without overlaps, but with sufficient breadth to make rotation visible.

The approach follows a fixed process that is reviewed weekly. A commodity is only included if its six-month performance is positive. It is only considered eligible for activation above one percent. This is followed by the trend check: the price must be above the GD50 and the short-term average (GD20) must exceed the GD50. Only then is the trend considered confirmed. The RSI serves as a control variable. Values between 50 and 70 signal stability, above 75 overheating, below 40 weakness. If the RSI rises too sharply or falls significantly, the approach reacts automatically: overheated movements are reduced, broken trends are sold.

The strength of the trend determines the leverage. If the six-month performance is over 10 %, a triple-leveraged ETF may be used. Between 5 % and 10 %, the 2× variant is used. Below this, the basic ETF is traded - the risk increases with the strength of the trend, not with your gut feeling.

The loss limitation is also clearly regulated. With the 1× variant, the exit takes place at a loss of more than 5 %, with 2× from 10 %, with 3× from 15 %. This means that the maximum risk per position remains constant. Profit protection takes place in two stages. If the RSI rises above 75 or the price falls below the GD50, half of the position is sold, while the rest continues to run as long as the long-term trend (GD50 > GD200) remains intact. If the price falls below GD200, the entire position is sold.

All signals are re-evaluated on a weekly basis. If another commodity outperforms in the ranking, an exit is also made - the position is rotated. The approach never holds more than one position at a time.

For a better overview, the rules can also be summarized in a condensed form:

• Momentum: Only active commodities with a positive six-month performance (> 1 %).
• Trend structure: Price > GD50 and GD20 > GD50 as a prerequisite for long signals.
• RSI filter: Entry only at 50 < RSI < 70; above 75 partial sell, below 40 sell.
• Leverage control: performance > 10 % → 3× ETF; 5-10 % → 2× ETF; < 5 % → basis.
• Stop loss: - 5 % (1×), - 10 % (2×), - 15 % (3×).
• Take profit 1: RSI > 75 or price < GD50 → 50 % Verkauf, Rest halten bei GD50 > GD200.
• Take profit 2: Price < GD200 → complete sell.
• Rotation: Weekly re-evaluation - in the event of a stronger commodity or violation of one of the rules → exit and switch.

This summary shows that the approach does not rely on intuition, but on clear, repeatable decision-making logic. It is not about the perfect forecast, but about reacting consistently - that is the core of every momentum strategy.

It is easy to see how this works in practice. Climbs $CRUD (-0,3 %) rises to a six-month performance of +12 %, GD20 > GD50, RSI = 63, the entry is made via the 3× ETF. If the RSI later rises above 75, half is sold. If the price falls below GD200, the complete exit follows. Or: If another commodity in the weekly ranking, such as $COPA (+1,1 %) (copper), provides stronger signals, a switch is also made. In this way, the approach remains flexible, but consistently rule-based.

The commodity rotation approach is not a rigid trading system, but an attempt to bring structure to the volatility of the commodity markets. It defines when an entry is justified, how much leverage is allowed, when profits should be secured and when to consistently exit - be it through a trend break or through relative weakness compared to the rest of the universe.

I have not yet put this approach into practice. But developments have already shown how helpful it can be to replace emotions with rules. Whether it proves itself in practice remains to be seen.

What do you think of the approach?

Are raw materials missing - or could some be removed?

What do you think of the rules - are they plausible?

Let's discuss this idea.
