Growth ETFs + Dividend Stocks does this make sense?

My portfolio is currently mainly ETFs, with $FWRG (-0,04 %) + $IUIT (+0,23 %) + $AVWS (-0,64 %) as the core, focused on long-term growth.

I’m considering adding individual dividend stocks as a second layer. The idea comes from my long-term plan: as I get older, I would gradually shift part of my portfolio from growth towards dividend income.

The reason is that I don’t particularly like the idea of having to sell assets to create liquidity later in life. In a FIRE scenario, for example, growth stocks and ETFs would require me to regularly sell part of my holdings to generate income. With dividend stocks, the income is generated without having to sell the underlying assets.

At the same time, I see myself somewhere in the middle right now: I’m still young enough to focus mainly on growth and have many years ahead, but I also feel it could make sense to start building some dividend positions gradually, taking advantage of good opportunities along the way.

So rather than waiting until much later to make that transition, I’m considering starting to build a dividend portfolio gradually alongside my growth ETFs.

Another reason is that my ETFs already give me broad exposure to most of the market, so adding more individual growth stocks would probably mean adding more of what I already own. Dividend stocks could potentially add a different dimension to the portfolio.

A few questions for the community:

  • Does combining growth ETFs + individual dividend stocks make sense for a 20+ year horizon?
  • Would a dividend-focused ETF make more sense instead, or alongside individual stocks?
  • Is it worth starting this transition early, even if dividends aren’t currently my main goal?
  • If individual dividend stocks make sense, which companies look attractive or undervalued right now?

I’m more interested in quality, sustainable dividend growth, strong fundamentals and reasonable valuations than simply chasing high yields.

How would you approach this? 🫡

@etfbaas I was thinking about $TDIV , but I need to study the $LDGL and $VHYL too. In a portfolio like mine what would be the size for this type of ETFs? Taking in consideration what I’ve already?

With the benefit of hindsight, I would definitely focus on growth ETFs first. If you want to take on a bit more risk, you could add a limited number of high-potential growth stocks. Only when you actually need the cash flow for FIRE convert this into high-dividend stocks. This is the most effective way to prevent dividend withholding tax leakage. That being said, I would definitely consider then dividend ETFs as well, just like @etfbaas suggests.

@income_engineer_djuro yeap, taxes are the main reason for me to not have dividend investment at the moment, since I still young growth is the way to go. Maybe the dividend ETFs are a good way to go or even a few high risk growth stocks. Do you have any suggestions? Just curiosity. Thanks for helping.

Well. That is very personal. What level of risk do you want to take, and which markets do you want to delve into?

I have exactly the same approach

40% currently growth etfs
30% dividend etfs
10% strong individual compounder stocks
15% gold
5% bitcoin

Building both parts at the same time

Growth part as long as I dont need the dividend, cause lets be honest thats the best way to accumulate wealth, but at the same time I’d like to get a good yield on cost in the future so therefore I am building the dividend part too already now and all dividends dripping back in.

My approach - nevel sell anything, keep the portfolio in the familly for next generation but at some point I’d like to use dividends as my income or at least supplement of my income
