Portfolio Check: Does the number of shares I own make sense given the size of my portfolio?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently thinking about how to structure my portfolio and would love to hear your thoughts on it.

My basic idea so far has been to build a solid foundation of quality stocks. My plan for the future is not to simply add to these positions steadily, but to make targeted, countercyclical purchases during periods of market weakness.

My question for you:

Are 19 positions (excluding ETFs $SPYI (-0,18%) ) with a portfolio size of about 13k already too much of a good thing?

Is there a risk that I’ll spread myself too thin with this many stocks, or do you think this is a healthy diversification to lay the foundation for further wealth accumulation?

If so, which stocks would you sell if you were in my shoes?

Oh, and it’s not entirely out of the question that $BTC (+0,99%) be added to the mix 😅

I look forward to your opinions and input!

Your mini-positions are probably stock gifts; as for the rest, you might want to consider how to spread out any additional purchases—after all, the U.S. stocks are also included in the ETF. Otherwise, the number is up to you—as many as you can keep track of with reasonable effort without losing sight of the big picture.

@Dividendenopi Not quite. Except for Mobility Global, I've sold off the rest. With the others, I just haven't had a chance to buy more "at a good price" yet 😬

I would focus on what's there and make sure it doesn't get any more. Then I'd rather clean up and reorganize.

Top ETFs—and I think your stock selection is excellent! Just keep building on it—focus more on the ETF through a savings plan, and only add to individual stocks when prices dip.

@Sand That's exactly what I was planning to do, too 😁

If you keep working on it, you'll get the hang of it.

@Ayecaramba256 Thanks for your feedback 😊
No. Less than €50,000, all in a single global index ETF.

Sure, that makes sense. Keep building it up—either through a savings plan and/or individual purchases.

I don't think the number is that important. You should set relative limits in your strategy—that's what I do. What percentage do you want to have in individual stocks? And for each position, what are the minimum and maximum percentages?

@Kreon Currently, individual stocks account for nearly 8% of my portfolio. In the future, I'd like to limit individual stocks to a maximum of 5% and increase my allocation to ETFs to at least 45% (or more).
@GeneralRed That sounds like a plan. And if you stick to it, the number of titles will work itself out.

I don't think there's such a thing as the "right" number of positions in a portfolio, no matter how large or small the portfolio is.
The key point for me is that positions that are too small no longer have any impact on the portfolio’s overall performance.

So if a position is so small that even a 50% price increase barely affects the portfolio’s overall performance, I think you might as well leave it out.

@GHF Thanks for your opinion.
What percentage would you consider "too small"?

@GeneralRed My personal lower limit is somewhere around 2–2.5%. If that then rises at an above-average rate of, say, 15–20% per year, the impact on the entire portfolio isn’t very significant.
What I do from time to time is put together a small basket of 3–4 stocks. These may also be smaller in size. I did this half a year ago in the space sector, since it was hard for me to assess which stocks would take off and which would flop.
The most important thing, though, is that you feel comfortable with it and can sleep soundly😉
