It's not just my two new additions, who are only 3 days old $KURA (-0,68%) but $GENB have gotten off to a good start. The one I introduced and bought here a week ago $CAI (-1,39%) is performing exceptionally well, up 27% in a week. I plan to add to my position here even on weaker days—which are sure to come—since I fully expect triple-digit prices over the medium term, looking ahead 3–4 years.

In any case, this is definitely thin ice! Anything is possible—from a 100-bagger to a total loss. You’ll need a lot of patience and nerves of steel. But if this new approach to drug development catches on, $GENB it has the potential to be a 100-bagger.

By the way, this isn’t all my own idea. It comes from a very comprehensive stock report. But since I certainly don’t want to bore you here, I’ll just outline the most important points.

Not the next drug. But a new way of developing drugs. Most biotechnology companies pursue a clear goal: They develop one or more drug candidates that, following successful clinical trials, are to be approved and subsequently marketed. Economic success often depends on just a few drugs. If a clinical trial fails, the entire company often loses a significant portion of its value. $GENB Biomedicines takes a fundamentally different approach. The company doesn’t just develop new drugs. It’s working on a technology platform that could transform the drug development process itself. In my view, this is precisely where the real incentive for an investment lies. While most biotechnology companies try to increase the likelihood of clinical success, Generate Biomedicines pursues a significantly more ambitious goal: The company aims to specifically design biological molecules in the future, rather than discovering them exclusively through traditional research processes. Should this approach prove successful, it would not only change the development of individual drugs; it could revolutionize the way a significant portion of biological therapeutics are created in the future.

Why Generate Biomedicines is more reminiscent of Nvidia than of a traditional biotech company!

Many of the most successful companies of the past decades had one thing in common: They didn’t just develop an outstanding product—they created platforms!

Of course, it would be presumptuous to equate Generate Biomedicines with that company today. Yet the underlying idea shows remarkable parallels. Generate Biomedicines, too, is not developing a single technology for a single product. The company is building a platform designed to continuously generate new biological molecules in the future. With every new dataset, every experiment, and every successfully developed protein, it’s not just a single active ingredient that improves. Ideally, the entire platform learns and expands its capabilities. It is precisely this scalability that distinguishes platform companies from traditional product companies.

A Solid Balance Sheet Despite High Investments

Despite high research expenses, Generate has a remarkably solid balance sheet. Following its initial public offering, Generate Biomedicines had approximately $517 million in cash and short-term marketable securities as of March 31, 2026. This provides the company with a substantial financial buffer for the further development of its platform and pipeline. A solid capital base is particularly important for young biotechnology companies. The development of new drugs requires long research cycles and high investments before the first significant revenues are generated. A comfortable liquidity buffer therefore gives management valuable time to further develop the platform without facing short-term financing pressure.

Long-Term Anchor Investors

At least as interesting as the balance sheet is the quality of the shareholders. Generate Biomedicines was founded by Flagship Pioneering, one of the world’s most successful company builders in the biotechnology sector. Flagship played a key role in building Moderna and has, for many years, pursued a strategy of identifying scientific platform technologies at an early stage and developing them over the long term.

According to Morningstar, the largest fund investors include Capital Group (CollegeAmerica Smallcap World 529A), T. Rowe Price Health Sciences, and JPMorgan Small Cap Growth are among the largest fund investors. Also particularly noteworthy is the involvement of Nvidia’s venture capital arm, NVentures, as one of the later investors in 2023. Less important than the size of the investment is the strategic signal it sends. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has been emphasizing for years that the most profound impact of artificial intelligence is expected to be in the life sciences in the future. The investment thus fits perfectly with the long-term vision of $GENB

A Machine for Developing New Drugs

Most biotechnology companies begin their research with a medical problem and then search for a suitable active ingredient. Generate Biomedicines takes the opposite approach. The company first develops a technology platform capable of designing new biological molecules. Only then does it generate concrete drug candidates. To put it simply: The pipeline delivers the products—the platform is the factory. It is precisely this factory that is at the heart of the company. It consists of several closely interlinked technologies that continuously improve one another.

Chroma:

The heart of the platform!

At its core is the AI model Chroma. Just as modern language models learn from billions of words, Chroma has been trained on vast amounts of biological information. The goal is to understand the “language of proteins” and use it to develop entirely new molecules that possess specific biological properties. In doing so, Chroma does not copy existing proteins. The platform designs new protein structures that do not necessarily occur in nature. Every protein has a unique three-dimensional structure. Even the smallest changes can determine whether a molecule is therapeutically effective or not. Generate therefore uses modern AI models to predict how newly designed proteins will fold spatially and what biological properties might result from this. This allows many unsuitable candidates to be digitally weeded out before they are even produced in the lab. Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) Digital predictions alone, however, are not enough. That is why Generate subsequently tests the designed molecules experimentally. Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) plays a key role in this process. This state-of-the-art technology makes it possible to visualize proteins with near-atomic precision. This allows researchers to determine whether the actual structure matches the digital design. Every experiment yields new insights.

And it is precisely this data that feeds back into the AI models. The longer the platform operates, the greater its body of knowledge becomes. Every successfully developed protein expands the database. Every laboratory analysis improves the prediction models. Every new experiment deepens our understanding of biological relationships. A self-reinforcing cycle emerges: More data leads to better models; better models enable more precise protein designs; and new proteins, in turn, provide additional data. It is precisely this ability to learn that makes the platform so interesting. With each development cycle, not only does the pipeline grow, but ideally, so does the performance of the entire technology.

The Pipeline

Of course, Generate Biomedicines is already developing its own drug candidates today. The current pipeline includes programs in several therapeutic areas, including:

• Immunology

• Oncology (cancer)

• Infectious diseases

• Other biological therapeutic approaches.

Each of these programs addresses a significant unmet medical need and, in its own right, possesses considerable commercial potential. From the perspective of traditional biotechnology analysis, these drug candidates are the main focus.

There is another perspective to consider. Should the technology prove successful, every successful development program would be far more than just an additional drug candidate. It would also serve as further proof that the platform works. And this is precisely where the key difference lies compared to traditional biotechnology companies, where a single drug often determines the company’s success. At Generate Biomedicines, the platform itself could become the actual asset in the long term.

Grand visions bring great uncertainties

Generate Biomedicines is pursuing one of the most ambitious visions in modern biotechnology, and therein lies its greatest risk. After all, no one can predict with certainty today whether the approach of programmable biology will actually gain traction on an industrial scale. Therefore, Generate Biomedicines should not be viewed as a traditional investment, but rather as a long-term bet on a potentially disruptive technology. From the perspective of a long-term investor, the following risks appear particularly significant:

1. Scientific Risk

The platform must first prove that it not only works in theory but can also consistently produce clinically successful drugs. Many years of intensive research often lie between a promising protein design and an approved therapy.

2. Clinical risk

Like any biotechnology company, Generate is subject to the usual risks associated with clinical trials. Individual programs may fail, trials may be delayed, or regulatory agencies may require additional data. In the short term, the stock price is therefore likely to continue reacting significantly to trial results.

3. Financing risk

Generate is still in an early stage of its development. The company is deliberately investing substantial resources in research and development and is not yet generating sustainable profits. Although Generate has a solid liquidity base following its initial public offering and virtually no long-term financial liabilities, further capital measures may be necessary in the event of a prolonged development phase.

4. Competitive Risk

Generate operates in one of the world’s most dynamic fields of research. Major pharmaceutical companies are investing billions in artificial intelligence. Other startups are developing comparable platforms. Technology conglomerates may also increase their investments in the field of generative biology in the future. The technological lead must therefore be continuously defended.

So, that’s it for now. It ended up being a bit longer than expected. I find it exciting and know there’s a lot of risk involved. But to pick up a few shares over the long term, I’m going to approach this with a small savings plan. It won’t work that way with most brokers, but it’s possible with Trading 212.

Wishing you all a fantastic weekend!
