Bolzano - According to a report in the business newspaper El Economista, the Spanish technology group Indra wants to acquire a significant part of the Italian defense industry. According to the report, Indra has submitted a non-binding takeover bid for Iveco Defense Vehicles (IDV). It is not yet clear what this means for the approximately 800 employees at the plant in Bolzano. IDV is the military division of commercial vehicle manufacturer Iveco, which specializes in armoured vehicles and civil defence equipment.
Takeover worth billions underway
The valuation of the division to be taken over amounts to around one billion euros. The aim of the move is to create a leading European player in the field of land defense, according to informed sources. The deal would be a strategic milestone for Indra: the company wants to establish itself as a central platform in the European armaments landscape in the long term.
The Iveco Defence plant in Bolzano plays a central role within the Group: highly specialized military vehicles have been produced there for decades, including the protected multi-purpose vehicle "LMV". With a possible takeover by Indra, the future of the plant in South Tyrol would also be part of strategic considerations - particularly with regard to supply chains, order placement and technological development.
Bidding process started
Indra is one of the finalists in the current bidding process alongside a consortium consisting of the Italian Leonardo and the German Rheinmetall Group, the US investor Bain Capital and an Australian bidder. However, some prominent names have already dropped out, including the French-German armaments consortium KNDS (Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Nexter), the British armaments group BAE Systems, the Czech company CSG and the American financial investor KPS Capital.
As recently as October 2024, Indra increased its stake in the Spanish company Tess Defense to over 51 percent. This makes the company the most important supplier of armored vehicles for the Spanish Ministry of Defense, including for the major VCR 8×8 and VAC projects. A takeover of IDV would also make Indra a central figure in future European armaments cooperations.
Process continues
It remains to be seen whether Indra's offer will prevail. Negotiations are ongoing and the outcome is likely to be of considerable importance for Italy as an industrial location and for European defense policy. What this means for the IDV plant in Bolzano remains to be seen. What is certain is that the employees should be prepared for a change in management.
