Iveco Bus has inaugurated a new prototype and test center at its Vysoké Mýto plant in the Czech Republic. It has been designed to accommodate all drive types, including battery and hydrogen-powered vehicles.
The two-storey facility now offers a doubled working area of 4,100 square meters and can accommodate prototypes up to 18 meters in length, according to the company. The facility includes twelve special workstations with overhead platforms to enable ergonomic work on the vehicle roofs. This is where the battery packs and hydrogen tanks are usually located on buses.
The new test center also has a heating chamber in which the vehicle's air conditioning system can be tested at temperatures of up to 50 degrees. With the test benches installed in Vysoké Mýto, Iveco Bus says it can also carry out interior and exterior noise measurements, vibration tests, driving behavior analyses and energy consumption assessments. The prototype and test center was built within 18 months and offers 50 workstations, 20 of which are for engineers. According to Iveco, the staff have received "comprehensive" training on alternative drives and new energies.
In future, the employees will work closely with the other Iveco Bus research facilities - especially for validation tests that are not carried out in Vysoké Mýto. Heating systems and electronics are tested at the French site in Vénissieux, for example, while the Turin center specializes in durability tests. The combination of the locations should help in the development of new bus models. "The new prototype and test center in Vysoké Mýto is of strategic importance for the development of future vehicle models with state-of-the-art technology, regardless of the drive energy," says David Kříž, Managing Director of Iveco Czech Republic.
The test center is located at a large Iveco Bus site. Vysoké Mýto is where Iveco Bus builds the Crossway and Evadys series models. Most of the vehicles are exported.
