Zoetis — $73.54
Revaluation — August 13, 2026
Zoetis has moved from a company that was previously difficult to justify at its valuation to a potentially compelling opportunity at $73.54.
The key distinction is important: the stock is cheap because there is a real operational problem, particularly in U.S. Companion Animal. This is not simply a multiple compression story.
However, the Q2 2026 results also suggest that the weakness is relatively concentrated rather than a broad deterioration of the entire business. International markets, Livestock and Diagnostics remain strong, while Zoetis continues to invest heavily in R&D, innovation and new growth platforms.
At $73.54, the IPIS v2.2 therefore identifies Zoetis as a STRONG BUY, while recognizing that the investment still carries meaningful execution and competitive risk.
1. What changed in Q2 2026?
The quarter was clearly weak:
- Revenue: $2.468B, -1% organic operational
- Adjusted net income: $781M, -2%
- Adjusted diluted EPS: $1.87, +4%
- U.S. revenue: -7%
- U.S. Companion Animal: -11%
- International: +6% organic
- Livestock: +11% organic
- Companion Animal Diagnostics: +12%
The main message is:
Zoetis is not experiencing a generalized deterioration across the company. The main problem is concentrated in U.S. Companion Animal.
That distinction is critical for the IPIS.
2. Is the deterioration serious?
Yes.
Dermatology is the clearest warning sign.
Key Dermatology revenue declined 16% organically, while Zoetis’ U.S. in-clinic market share fell to approximately 86%, down 5 percentage points sequentially and 10 percentage points year over year.
Simparica is also under pressure:
- The U.S. category is declining.
- Affordability pressures are increasing.
- Promotional competition has intensified.
- Simparica Trio’s U.S. in-clinic share was approximately 21%.
- Share declined 2 percentage points sequentially and 1 percentage point year over year.
Therefore, we should not simply assume that everything returns to normal in 2027.
That would be the classic mistake of treating a potentially structural problem as a temporary one.
3. But there is another side to the story
This is where the IPIS v2.2 becomes particularly interesting.
While U.S. Companion Animal is under pressure:
International
+6% organic
Livestock
+11% organic
Diagnostics
+12%
International Companion Animal
+5% organic
International Livestock
+6% organic
International gross margin also improved to 71.0% from 70.4%.
This materially reduces the probability that we are looking at a deterioration of the entire business model.
4. The pipeline remains exceptional
This may be one of the areas the market is currently underappreciating.
Zoetis is developing new opportunities across:
- Chronic Kidney Disease
- Oncology
- Cardiology
- Obesity & Metabolic Diseases
- Anxiety
Management estimates potential addressable markets of:
Area
Estimated TAM
Chronic Kidney Disease
$3.0–4.0B
Oncology
$1.2–1.7B
Cardiology
$0.8–1.0B
Obesity & Metabolic Diseases
$0.8–1.0B
Anxiety
$0.7–1.4B
There are multiple assets and diagnostics biomarkers under development across these areas.
At the same time, Zoetis advanced several products during Q2, including Lenivia, Portela, Poulvac Procerta HVT-ND and Bonqat.
This is exactly the type of reinvestment runway that the IPIS v2.2 is designed to capture.
5. Capital allocation remains a major strength
Year-to-date, Zoetis has:
- Invested approximately $350M in R&D
- Invested approximately $225M in capital expenditures
- Returned $1.6B to shareholders
- Continued dividends and share repurchases
- Acquired VitalRADS
- Advanced the planned acquisition of Neogen’s animal genomics business
This matters.
Zoetis is not simply cutting costs to protect short-term earnings.
It is simultaneously:
defending its franchises + investing in R&D + acquiring capabilities + returning capital to shareholders.
6. The 2026 guidance reset
This is the most important change.
Current 2026 guidance
Revenue: $9.12–9.32B
Organic operational growth: -3% to -1%
Adjusted net income: $2.57–2.62B
Organic operational growth: -9% to -5%
Adjusted diluted EPS:
$6.15–6.25
Zoetis is therefore no longer being priced as a high-growth compounder.
7. Valuation at $73.54
Using the midpoint of 2026 guidance:
2026 adjusted EPS ≈ $6.20
Therefore:
Forward P/E
$73.54 / $6.20 = 11.9x
That is an unusually low multiple for a company with Zoetis’ historical economics, margins, R&D capabilities and competitive positioning.
However, the IPIS should not simply conclude:
“11.9x earnings = buy.”
The critical question is whether $6.20 represents the trough or whether earnings will continue to deteriorate.

Business Quality Score: ~92/100
Zoetis remains an exceptional-quality business.
The quality score does not collapse simply because one major franchise is experiencing a difficult period.
9. Investment Score
This is where the v2.2 framework becomes particularly relevant.
Bear Case
U.S. Companion Animal remains under pressure, competition intensifies and recovery takes several years.
Estimated value: $75–85
Base Case
2026 proves to be the trough, the business stabilizes in 2027 and the major franchises gradually recover, with moderate medium-term growth.
Estimated value: $105–115
Bull Case
Dermatology recovers, Simparica regains momentum, new products scale successfully and the pipeline accelerates growth.
Estimated value: $135–150
I currently use:
IPIS Fair Value: ~$110
I deliberately avoid using a $130–140 valuation because the current competitive deterioration deserves a meaningful discount.
10. Margin of Safety
At a fair value of $110:
Current price: $73.54
Upside to fair value: approximately 49.6%
Margin of safety: approximately 33%
And this does not require a return to Zoetis’ historically elevated valuation multiples.

STRONG BUY
Zoetis does not qualify as a Strong Buy because everything is going well.
It qualifies because:
The underlying asset remains exceptional while the market price already reflects a substantial deterioration in the business.

13. The critical risk
I would not buy Zoetis simply because the stock has fallen dramatically.
The decline is justified by genuine operational issues.
The company’s own Q2 presentation is explicit about the causes: softer end-market demand, macro-driven price sensitivity and promotion-led competitive pressure.
The key IPIS question is therefore:
Is Zoetis losing its moat, or is it experiencing a temporary reset?
At this stage, the evidence favors the second interpretation — but it has not yet been proven.
14. What would invalidate the thesis?
🚨 Red flags
I would materially reduce the fair value if the next 2–3 quarters show:
- Continued Dermatology market-share losses
- Continued Simparica Trio share erosion
- U.S. Companion Animal remaining down more than 5–10%
- Further guidance reductions
- Simultaneous deterioration in International and Livestock
- Pipeline launches failing to offset mature-product pressure
In that scenario, fair value could fall toward $85–95.
Zoetis could still be undervalued at $73.54, but the Strong Buy thesis would become considerably weaker.
🟢 What would confirm the thesis?
The thesis would strengthen materially if 2027 showed:
- Stabilization in Dermatology
- Recovery in Simparica
- Continued Diagnostics growth
- Livestock growth at mid-single digits or better
- Recovery in Companion Animal
- Successful scaling of Lenivia and Portela
- New products beginning to offset mature franchises
In that scenario, fair value could reasonably move back toward $120–130+.
🏆 Final Verdict
Zoetis — $73.54
IPIS v2.2: STRONG BUY
Business Quality:
92/100
Investment Score:
~86/100
IPIS Fair Value:
~$110
Bear Case: $75–85
Base Case: $105–115
Bull Case: $135–150
Upside to Fair Value:
~50%
Current valuation:
~11.9x 2026 adjusted EPS
The most important point is this:
At $73.54, Zoetis is beginning to look exactly like the type of opportunity the IPIS is designed to identify: an exceptional business temporarily penalized by genuine operational problems, where the market price appears to discount a deterioration that may ultimately prove more severe than the long-term reality.
I would therefore initiate a position at $73.54, but I would not take an oversized position immediately. The Q2 results justify a staged entry, because we still need evidence that the operational trough has been reached.
IPIS Decision: BUY — STRONG BUY
“It is better to miss a gain than to suffer a loss.”
The opportunity is compelling — but the discipline remains the same: we are buying the business because its long-term economics remain exceptional, not because the stock has simply fallen.
