Philip Morris International $PM (+2.66%) has made a $16 billion takeover bid for rival Swedish Match $SWMA which is best known for producing smokeless "snus." Shares of Swedish Match $SWMA have seen a 32% premium since the talks were announced. This product is currently not approved for sale in the EU, with the exception of Sweden, but the move is part of PMI's push to diversify beyond tobacco-based products.

2. MARA receives $23 million from Coinbase Ventures

MARA, a pan-African crypto exchange platform, has received $23 million in seed funding from Coinbase $COIN (-1.4%) Ventures, FTX and other web3 investors. This funding will enable MARA to develop a range of products to meet the growing demand for cryptocurrencies in the region, where cryptocurrency usage has increased by 1,200% in the last year.

3. Brazil's inflation at highest level in 26 years

Despite already high expectations of 12.07%, prices in Brazil rose 12.13% in the 12 months to April. This is the largest increase the world's fifth most populous country has seen in 26 years. Prices rose in April in eight of the nine categories that make up the Consumer Price Index.
