40 years what now

Hello everyone,

I turned 40 years young this week. Unfortunately, I missed my goal of reaching 300k by then, as my portfolio has underperformed YTD. Congrats to some in the community, there have been some really great jumps in performance in the last few months 🚀

What are your goals for the next decade?

  • Pay off my mortgage. There are still 210k outstanding (210k have been repaid since 2015). It's an apartment in Munich
  • Maintain savings rate of currently €2,100 and expand if necessary -> road to €500k
  • Avoid expensive wrong decisions (e.g. sale $EOAN (-0.34%) and $IFX (-1.78%) at the beginning of last year)
  • Gross dividend growth in the portfolio of 10 % p.a.
  • Continue to travel diligently and collect experiences with my daughter

the community is a great source of inspiration in terms of milestones achieved, introductions to companies that are unknown to me and also critical questions.

For the younger ones among you, the 4 before that doesn't hurt, but it does feel like a new stage. Are there people of a similar age who feel the same way?

I can't remember 40, it's been too long. Otherwise, congratulations
Btw: I think you can be really satisfied with the overall performance

40 is cool ... you're old enough to be a bit more relaxed about life and still young enough to do almost anything. But yes, I felt the same way. It was definitely a new chapter. I'd almost say I've been enjoying life a bit more since then 😁

I'm just a little older. Damn similar portfolio. Congratulations. I only recently reached 300 k. But you're way ahead of me. Keep up the good work. I've also made a lot of bad decisions. One hurts the most. Last year in Jan 25 I got out of $MU at €100 because of Trump's tariffs. Now I've lost almost 30 k in returns. It feels like everyone here is making these trades. Everyone has a story like that here 😉. Have fun in the community.

@DenisVidukic Yes, these are bitter trades. Unfortunately, we remember the bad ones more and more and take the good ones for granted.

I'm 47 and we emigrated 2 years ago. So everything is new and restarting. Less stress, new country, etc. I was lucky to take full advantage of the hydrogen hype between 2018 and 2021. That paid for our house and other things. My goal is to stop at 60, as we have no children, the plan is to sell everything and then live off the proceeds. If everything goes as planned, we'll have around €2.5 million by the end. My wife and I agree that any left over will be donated.
But always remember, who else had already saved so much money at 40 and paid half of their property. Congratulations and keep up the good work.
I've only linked the Danish deposit here, I'll gradually close the German one. Then shift here to

"Avoid expensive wrong decisions..."

Simply don't buy individual shares. Statistically more sensible.

@Gehebeltes-EFH I know, but somehow it's no fun without shares 😅😬
@Brazzo_Muc In my opinion, "fun" should be left out of investing.

Congratulations on your milestone birthday!

Great work... Tip from me: reduce your stocks and limit yourself to max. 1 ETF... otherwise your performance will not improve

The time between 40 and 50 is the best time - enjoy it. It was during this time that I really understood the stock market. Now that I'm 60, it's paying off. My portfolio fluctuates more these days, but I make more OS trades. Every decade has its good side.

I can identify with the 40 Club. Certainly not yet with the size of your portfolio. I'm sure that we can still exceed the 1 million mark in almost the same period :-)

@Krush82 I'd be more than happy once we see the million. When the place is paid off, I can also raise the quota again.

@Brazzo_Muc When our house is paid off, the savings rate will certainly not be increased accordingly. The money will be used to live a "nicer" life. When the portfolio reaches a certain size and return, "deposits" have little to no impact

@Krush82 I want to put on a bit more weight until my mid-50s and then slowly reduce it (reduce hours etc.)

Do you feel comfortable with German car stocks?
I notice that at first glance, you have little to very little invested in those areas that have high return potential in the coming years.
Commodities Ki, chips, etc.
This would allow you to achieve your goals a little faster.

@THG49 I missed the exit from the car stocks. I will probably fill the loss pot with Porsche and hold bmw as I think it is best positioned. As far as the future is concerned, you're absolutely right - things are looking a little thin at the moment. Here I will probably act via ETFs because I don't know much about them overall

You still need to update your profile
