BYD announces launch of megawatt charging in Germany for 2026

attachment

The megawatt charger from BYD $1211 (-0,26%) is coming to Germany this year.

It should be possible to charge with 1,000 kilowatts. In just five minutes, electricity for a range of up to 400 km can be recharged.

BYD plans to install 300 such megawatt chargers in Germany by the end of the year, most of them at BYD dealerships. This has now been officially announced by the Chinese manufacturer.

Looking back, BYD writes that it is satisfied with the year 2025. Above all, the response at the IAA was enormous. Among other things, megawatt charging was demonstrated at the Open Space on Munich's Königsplatz. The system had previously been presented in China. It allows a suitable electric car to be charged with one megawatt (1,000 kW) of power. However, this requires two charging cables to be plugged in at the same time.

Experts consider the 1,000 kW figure to be more of a marketing claim, but are enthusiastic about the LFP battery, which enables very fast charging. The internal resistance of the battery has apparently been reduced, which means that less heat is generated during charging. The LFP can also withstand higher temperatures.

Other highlights for the Group last year included the launch of the premium brand Denza and the record-breaking drive of the Yangwang U9 Xtreme. In addition, BYD's new registrations increased more than sevenfold last year, albeit from a low level: in 2024 there were just under 3,000 new registrations, in 2025 there were already 23,306. 11,167 of these were pure electric cars. At around 2,700 units, the Dolphin Surf, the brand's entry-level model, was the most popular.

The number of dealers and workshops grew from 26 to the current 150 over the course of last year, and the trend is expected to continue upwards. The product range now comprises eleven models, including eight purely electric (BEVs) and three plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). Four new models were added last year: the Atto 2, the aforementioned Dolphin Surf and the Seal 6 DM-i and Atto 2 DM-i PHEVs. The vehicles referred to as "super hybrids" or "Dual Mode Intelligent" (DM-i) at BYD were particularly successful in 2025. Of the 23,306 BYD vehicles sold, 12,306 were PHEVs, i.e. more than half.

BYD plans to further increase the number of dealer locations to 350 in 2026 - that would be significantly more than double the number.

I'm really excited to see how this will be implemented with our electricity grid and the necessary permits when I see what we had to do for some simple charging stations 🙈

@TradingHase As this has been on the table for some time, I believe that they are already further along than we think.

@SAUgut777 as in pretty much all matters haha

It's not really necessary except for trucks or buses. For the masses, 200-300 KW is more than enough...

@Migu11 is like the checkout at the supermarket...the quicker you finish the better.
Yes, but currently not even 10% of registered vehicles can manage 200 KW, let alone at the current temperatures...

@Migu11 That's where BYD comes in and they are not just a car manufacturer, but also a battery manufacturer and a bit more 🤫

Even the current BYDs can't hold 1000. The infrastructure is then faster than the customers, if they really manage to put these mega-chargers into operation so quickly. However, it shows me that I wasn't wrong to hold the shares 😉.

@TradingHase I think this works with storage directly in the column, which must first be charged more slowly and then quickly charge the car like a power bank

@fund_navigator_elshq but designed for more than just a power bank 😉

Megawatt charging is already possible in Germany, see the first charging parks with hardware from Alpitronic! I also think that the 1000 charging capacity in cars is unnecessary, but makes sense for larger vehicles if they can't be charged overnight.

And me with fluttering electricity for over 30C a kWh - hold my plastic capsule on the bottle - we'll knock the forms around your ears until you drown in bureaucracy 😂🤝

@Tobiwankenobi500 They just aren't citizens, so some things are much quicker and less complicated than bottle caps 🤫😅👍🏻

@SAUgut777 I'm excited! When Elon talks about his Berlin experience, it makes me feel different lol

@Tobiwankenobi500 as long as he doesn't say "ick bin ein Berliner" it's all good 🤣
