US President Donald Trump (79) has called for a one-year cap on credit card interest rates. From January 20, 2026, interest rates should be limited to 10 percent, Trump wrote on Friday (local time) on the social media platform Truth Social, which he co-founded. However, he did not provide any details on how his plan would be implemented or how he would persuade companies to comply with the target. "We will no longer allow the American public to be 'ripped off' by credit card companies," Trump added.

I'll wait and see on JANUARY 20th 🙈

@Smudeo I'm not really unsettled by the current debate. The proposal is certainly very popular politically from a consumer perspective, but I think it is rather unlikely that it will actually be implemented. As far as I know, a binding 10% interest rate cap would require legislation in Congress. I also believe that such a law would meet with great resistance in Congress as well as from the banks. I currently see this more as a political signal than as realistic short-term regulation.
