Why does a data center operator report a classification by the network operator as a success?
$IREN (+6,54%) has announced that its 2GW Sweetwater Hub has been provisionally designated as base load in the Batch-Zero process of the Texas grid operator ERCOT.
- Sweetwater 1: 1,400 MW
- Sweetwater 2: 600 MW
Other projects in the pipeline were also included in Batch Zero.
What is “Batch Zero”?
ERCOT has replaced the previous case-by-case process for large consumers of 75 MW or more. Instead of reviewing each request individually, all qualified projects are evaluated in a collective study. The reason is the total volume: There are over 438,000 MW of requests in the queue, about 90% of which are from data centers.
What does “Base Load” mean?
Each project is classified as “base load,” “study load,” or “excluded.”
Base Load means that the project is considered sufficiently advanced and is included in the grid model without being subject to another reliability assessment or megawatt allocation.
What does this mean for IREN?
In the short term, the classification does not affect revenue or capacity; however, but it secures Sweetwater’s position in a queuewhere over 438,000 MW in requests are competing for significantly less available grid capacity.
This increases the likelihood that the 2 GW will actually be able to connect to the grid.
