The US military is getting a new mega cargo plane. It bears the name "WindRunner" and can transport six CH-47 Chinook helicopters or four F-16 jets.
The US aerospace company "Radia" has unveiled the "WindRunner", a new wide-body cargo aircraft. It is designed to transport oversized military equipment without disassembly.
It is intended to close a gap in the air transport sector for the Pentagon and the defense ministries of allies. According to "Radia", the aircraft is optimized not only in terms of payload, but also in terms of volume.
US military receives world's largest cargo aircraft: capable of transporting mobile hospitals
"WindRunner is designed to transport complete systems, long-range radars, tiltrotors, collaborative combat aircraft, mobile hospitals and other complex, oversized cargo. Without having to disassemble them, without the need for special infrastructure and without slowing down operations," says Mark Lundstrom, founder and CEO of Radia.
According to "Radia", the aircraft, which is scheduled to take off in 2027, will offer seven times the cargo volume of a C-5 and twelve times that of a C-17, i.e. more than 6800 cubic meters or 6.8 million liters. It is configured for roll-on/roll-off delivery of complete systems, ready for operation on arrival. The "WindRunner" can transport six CH-47 Chinook helicopters, four CV-22 Osprey tiltrotors or four F-16 jets or F-35Cs without air refueling.
Astronautics Corporation of America, a Wisconsin-based leader in the design, development and manufacture of avionics equipment, will serve as the designer and prime integrator of WindRunner's avionics systems.
" Astronautics is honored to support a program that integrates state-of-the-art avionics and cybersecurity into a unique aircraft, " said Robert Atac , President of Astronautics. " We see WindRunner as a platform that will redefine expectations for global aerospace logistics. "
Leading aerospace companies Aernnova, Leonardo and AFuzion will work with Radia to build the WindRunner, the world's largest aircraft
