Is anyone invested in this stock, and what do you think of it?

I see it as a leading U.S. asset manager specializing in the private sector (private equity, private credit, infrastructure, and real estate). If interest rates are cut again (which many expect), its potential will rise once more.

What am I missing?

Many thanks to the community

🎯 HLNE – The Understated King of Private Markets Benefits from the Retail Wealth Megatrend

📊 Hamilton Lane Inc. (HLNE)
Price: $82.26 · Market Cap: ~$4.5 billion · As of: Oct. 20, 2026
Sector: Financial Services / Private Markets Asset Management ·

🏰 The Moat
Competitive Advantage & Switching Costs:
Hamilton Lane has a strong moat (3/4), based primarily on enormous switching costs and long-standing client relationships in the private markets (private equity, private credit, infrastructure). Capital commitments in these fund classes typically run for 10–15 years, which guarantees HLNE exceptionally high visibility and stability in management fees (~88% recurring revenue).

Moat Trend & Sustainability:
The moat is being continuously strengthened by the company’s expansion into the retail wealth segment (evergreen funds for retail investors and wealth management platforms). The barriers to entry for newcomers in this highly regulated B2B2C infrastructure are extremely high.
Base-Rate Classification:
Asset-light asset managers with double-digit AUM growth and returns on equity of >25% have historically been among the most reliable long-term compounding stocks on the equity market.

💰 The Numbers Behind It
* ROE (Return on Equity): 25.10% (sector average: ~11–13%)
* Operating Margin (pre-tax): 46.5%
* Net Revenue Margin: 32.14%
* Revenue CAGR (5 years): 14.2% p.a.
* EPS CAGR (5 years): 16.8% p.a.
* Capex / Revenue: <2.0% (Asset-Light in Reinform)

Einordnung:

👔 Management & Kapitalallokation
Das Management um Gründer und Insider hält substanzielle Anteile (>15% insider ownership) and ensures optimal alignment with shareholder interests. The recent leadership transition, with Hartley Rogers serving as Co-CEO alongside Juan Delgado-Moreira, proceeded smoothly and ensures continuity in the company’s strategy.

⚠️ What I’m watching for
→ Private equity fundraising slowdown: With interest rates appearing to remain high, the global transaction market in the PE sector has slowed at times. This temporarily curbs incentive fees (performance-based fees) but has little impact on the core fee business.
→ AUM growth rate: Should inflows from institutional investors cool off, operating leverage will weaken. So far, however, the strong retail evergreen business has easily offset this.

💵 Valuation
* Fair Value: $115.00 · Current: $82.26 · Upside: +39.8%
Calculation:
The fair value is based on a conservatively weighted multiple/DCF model with a discounted forward P/E of ~14.0x (the historical average was closer to 22–25x) and assumes moderate AUM growth of ~10% per year. With a trailing P/E ratio currently at only ~12.5x, the stock is historically a bargain.

* Bear scenario: $62.00 (−24.6%) (P/E freeze & AUM stagnation)
* Base scenario: $115.00 (+39.8%) (Continuous trend scenario)
* Bull scenario: $150.00 (+82.3%) (Retail wealth explosion)
* Risk-reward ratio: 1.62 : 1

🎯 Where is the market (possibly) wrong?
The market is currently punishing HLNE amid general skepticism toward alternative asset managers and is mistakenly lumping the company in with more cyclical PE players. In doing so, the market is ignoring the company’s enormous recurring management fees as well as its market leadership in evergreen solutions for retail investors.

📅 Next Triggers
→ Next Earnings Release: Focus on net inflows (AUM net inflows) and the margin in the evergreen segment.
→ Key trigger for ending this thesis: Organic management fees turn negative for two consecutive quarters (signs of structural AUM outflows).
→ Second stop-theory trigger: The pre-tax margin falls below 40% on a sustained basis (signs of a loss of control over costs or pressure on fee rates).

Rating: BUY 🟢 · Reaper Score: 8/10
Hamilton Lane offers an extremely profitable, high-margin, asset-light business model with sustained double-digit AUM growth—currently trading at a discount of over 28% to fair value.
