Philip Morris International $PM (+2,66 %) has made a $16 billion bid to buy rival Swedish Match $SWMA , who are primarily known for producing smoke-free “snus”. $SWMA shares are at a 32% premium since talks were announced. This product is currently not authorised for sale in the EU, except Sweden, but this move is part of PMI’s push to diversify beyond tobacco-based products.

2. MARA raises $23m from Coinbase Ventures
MARA, a pan-African crypto exchange platform, has received $23m in seed funding from Coinbase $COIN (-1,4 %) Ventures, FTX, and other web3 investors. This funding will allow MARA to build a suite of products, as they want to address the increasing demand for crypto in the region, where crypto usage grew 1,200% last year.

3. Brazil inflation at highest level in 26 years
Despite already high expectations of 12.07%, prices increased by 12.13% in the 12 months through April in Brazil. This is the steepest increase the world’s fifth-most populous nation has seen in 26 years.
