Kroger Co. (ticker: KR) is one of the largest food retailers in the USA and operates around 2,700 supermarkets under well-known brands such as Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer and King Soopers. The company is clearly part of the defensive consumer sector, as food is in constant demand even in economically weaker phases. Kroger has a long company history and a strong market position in many US states.
In the 2023/24 financial year, Kroger generated sales of around 150 billion US dollars, making it one of the world's top-selling retailers. Reported net income was around 2.2 billion US dollars, while adjusted earnings per share amounted to around 4.50 US dollars. These figures illustrate the typical grocery retail business model: very high sales with comparatively low margins.
The operating margin recently stood at around 2 percent, which is normal by industry standards, but leaves little room for cost increases. Rising wage, energy and logistics costs in particular represent a structural risk. Kroger is attempting to counteract this pressure on margins through efficiency programs, automation and greater use of data analysis.
Own brands, which now account for over 30 percent of sales, are a key earnings factor. These products offer higher margins than traditional branded goods and are in particularly high demand in times of high inflation. This is complemented by an extensive customer loyalty program that enables Kroger to manage prices and offers based on data.
Free cash flow has been stable for years at around 3 billion US dollars per year. This is mainly used for dividend payments and share buybacks. The dividend has been continuously increased over many years and most recently amounted to around 1.26 US dollars per share, which corresponds to a dividend yield of around 2 to 2.5 percent. In addition, Kroger has regularly bought back its own shares in recent years, which has reduced the number of shares and supported earnings per share in the long term.
In terms of valuation, the share is usually traded at a price/earnings ratio of between 13 and 16, which is below the average of the broad US stock market. This valuation reflects the limited growth, but offers a certain safety margin for defensive investors.
A key issue recently has been the planned takeover of Albertsons, which would have promised considerable economies of scale in strategic terms. The failure to overcome regulatory hurdles brought uncertainty and additional costs, but did not fundamentally change Kroger's financial stability.
Competitive pressure remains high, particularly from Walmart, Aldi, Target and Amazon/Whole Foods, which compete strongly on price. At the same time, Kroger continues to invest in e-commerce, delivery services and automation. Online sales are growing at a double-digit rate, but are still less profitable than the brick-and-mortar business.
Overall, Kroger is not a classic growth stock, but a solid, defensive consumer stock with a stable cash flow, moderate valuation and reliable return of capital. For long-term investors who value stability and dividends, the share can be a sensible addition to their portfolio, provided they accept limited price growth.
