It operates through the following segments: Professional, Residential, and Other. The Professional segment includes designing professional turf maintenance, landscape and lighting, rental, specialty, and underground construction, snow and ice management, and agricultural products. The Residential segment is involved in marketing and selling products to homeowners through a variety of distribution channels including outdoor power equipment distributors and dealers, mass retailers, hardware retailers, home centers, and online and direct to end-users. The Other segment focuses on its wholly owned domestic distribution company, certain corporate activities, and the elimination of intersegment revenues and expenses. The company was founded by John Samuel Clapper and Henry Clay McCartney on July 10, 1914 and is headquartered in Bloomington, MN.
