The managers at McDonald's and Burger King are pricking up their ears. A competitor suddenly makes its way to Germany.

The year 2024 is history, now 2025 is just around the corner! And in the year just ended, there were a few stories that moved people. These included the launch of a new fast food chain in Germany - the people in charge at McDonald's, Burger King and Co. are keeping a very close eye on it.

If you love fast food, you can't get past McDonald's and Burger King. The two companies are probably the best-known chains when it comes to burgers, fries and the like. But will this soon come to an end? The competition is now on the rise!

McDonald's, Burger King and co.: competitor with a different cuisine

In May 2024, the news made the rounds: Taco Bell is coming to Germany! This means that after McDonald's, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut, the next fast food provider is coming to our country.

Although Taco Bell does not have the same range as McDonald's and Burger King, with its Mexican cuisine (burritos, tacos and co.), Taco Bell could steal customers away from McDonald's, Burger King and co. in some places.

While it was still said in spring 2024 that the first Taco Bell branch would open in Berlin in midsummer 2024, things look different at the beginning of 2025: According to the dpa, IS-Holding (ISH) does not want to open the first Taco Bell branch in Berlin until summer 2025. ISH owns the franchise rights for Germany.

In 1981, McDonald's and Burger King went to war.

Burger King hired a 5-year-old girl for an ironic commercial.

McDonald's then sued the five-year-old.

This was the beginning of the most expensive fast food war in history.

McDonald's dominates the fast food market with its iconic golden arches and Happy Meals.

But Burger King was tired of playing second fiddle.

So they published an ad that would start a decades-long war:

They hired 5-year-old Sarah Michelle Gellar (some may remember her) to do something unprecedented:

They attacked McDonald's by name on national television.

In the ad, she compared McDonald's burgers to Burger King's, claiming they were 20 percent smaller.

What happened next would change fast food marketing forever ...

McDonald's immediately filed a lawsuit:

- Burger King

- Their advertising agency

- And yes, even 5-year-old Sarah Michelle Gellar herself

"I was the first person to mention another competitor's name on a job," Gellar later recalled.

But that was just the beginning ...

The legal dispute triggered the so-called "Burger War".

Both chains have abandoned their traditional family-friendly marketing.

Before 1980, both focused on positive campaigns - McDonald's with Happy Meals, Burger King with "Have it Your Way".

In 1984, McDonald's launched its counterattack:

The McDLT - a direct competitor to the Whopper.

The innovation? A unique two-chamber packaging:

- Warm side dish: burger and bottom bun

- Cool side dish: lettuce, tomato and top bun

"Keep the hot side hot and the cool side cool."

They put EVERYTHING on the McDLT:

80-100 million dollars were spent on the campaign.

Convinced Jason Alexander to perform a Broadway-style musical commercial, years before his Seinfeld fame.

The burger sold for $1.49 (about $3.60 today).

But there was a problem ...

McDLT's innovative packaging was made of polystyrene.

As environmental awareness grew at the end of the 1980s, McDonald's came under increasing pressure.

They discontinued production of the product in December 1990 and replaced it with the McLean Deluxe.

Meanwhile, Burger King was preparing its own disaster ...

In 1985, Burger King launched the "Where's Herb?" campaign.

The concept? A promotional campaign to find Herb - a fictional character who has never eaten a Whopper.

Customers could get Whoppers at a reduced price by saying "I'm not Herb" when ordering.

However, there was one big problem:

No one knew what Herb looked like until he was unveiled at Super Bowl XX in January 1986.

The campaign left customers completely confused.

It became known as one of the worst marketing failures in history.

It was their last campaign with the agency J. Walter Thompson.

The rivalry led to unprecedented innovations in the fast food sector:

- New packaging technology such as the McDLT's double compartment

- Creative marketing approaches

- Menu diversification

- Focus on food quality

Both chains were forced to evolve or die.

The burger wars have shown us something crucial:

Innovation is not just about products.

It's about how you tell your story.

And in today's digital age, this is more important than ever.

Expenditure/Revenue Recap 2022

In the sense of getquin, which allows us all not only to track our own portfolios, but also to discuss money and investments.

First I want to talk about my income, then about my expenses and be as transparent as possible.

(For tracking I use Finanzguruwhich I use since May)

First my income:

In 2022 I have 55.222,26€ received.

My main source of income is my work in the white collar relationship, there I have 40.464,78€ received (December salary outstanding). The rest came from "rental income" of my girlfriend, tax office, profits (shares, sweepstakes, Ebay) and Co.

The income point is I think but not as interesting as the expenditure point:

My expenses:

In 2022 I have 58.218,25€ spent.

The biggest chunk with 19.334€ lies there with the Living. The rent is always deducted in full from my account, my girlfriend then transfers your part. In total, I / we have paid 9,463 € in rent, and moved in April together. The Deposit from 2.550€ I took over alone (Rheinmetall 7er lever of March runs) and the largest part of the furnishings with 5.686€.

The rest comes from electricity, parking and miscellaneous.

Next comes Invest with 10.046€.

There went 8.213€ to TradeRepublic, 1.148€ in Crypto, 380€ in gold/silver and my little old building society contract was allowed to settle with 300€ happy.

The third point is 7.349€
InsurancesThis includes private health insurance and pension insurance, which is why the amount is so gigantic.

The PKV takes since August 3.487€ and the RV
2.425€Thus remain occupational disability with 784 €, legal protection, accident and liability with a total of 651 €.

Let's move on to a nicer point: Shopping with 6.229€

This of course includes forever of small items.

The ones that stick out are a new cell phone from $AAPL , a lot of $AMZN (-2.39%) and $EBAY (-0.09%) clothing $YOU (+0.15%)
$ASC (-0.65%) and a lot of untitled stuff from $PYPL (-2.73%) and Klarna.

But also some gifts for friends and family.

Right after even better: Food with 3.624€

3.315€ went to supermarkets and discounters (I work in a grocery store, so I see a lot of great and tasty things every day) and 262€ to $HFG (-0.1%)

2.913€ are for travel have been spent.

Of course beautifully well-behaved with $ABNB (-5.19%) !

Likewise, a vacation is included, which I will make only in February 23, but is already paid 🎌.

Finances and taxes forms a small loan from my dad, which I paid him back and Donations for good causes with 2.765€.

The 2.428€ at leisure expenses include books, subscriptions to $NFLX (-1.73%)
$GOOGL (-2.28%)
$AAPL (+0.26%)
$AMZN (-2.39%) and $DIS (-1.33%) , ventures, sports, hobbies, hairdresser, cinema and Rock in the Park.

The last of the major items that remain are Restaurants with 1.266€. The most went real restaurants at home and abroad with 684€ and 582€ to fast food from $MCD (+0.5%)
$DPZ (-1.75%)
$SBUX (-0.91%)
$RBD (+0%) and $YUM (-1.41%)

The rest are then still smaller other expenses.

So... Holy Moly, that took longer than expected 😂.

I think I just took over an hour for all the analyses and the written record, but I think that I have also learned something from it.

Overall, I think that the expenses were ok, especially for the circumstances this year.

Next year I will invest and travel more and spend less on the apartment.

NVIDIA ($NVDA (-3.63%)) - The chip company delivered quarterly results yesterday. Revenue rose 53 percent to just over $7.6 billion (€6.7 billion) in the fourth fiscal quarter ended in late January. The bottom line was the profit of three billion dollars even slightly more than twice as high as in the same quarter last year. For the current quarter, NVIDIA held out the prospect of a further increase in sales to 8.1 billion dollars - while analysts had rather expected around 7.3 billion dollars.

Commerzbank ($CBK (-0.9%)) - The bank posted a profit of 430 million euros in 2021, compared with a loss of 2.9 billion in the prior-year period. Operating profit was 1.18 billion euros, after the bank had posted a loss of 233 million euros in the previous year. Commerzbank CEO Manfred Knof said: "2022 will be a decisive year in the implementation of our strategy," "We want to build on last year's successful customer business and increase consolidated profit to more than 1 billion euros."

EU - Payments with cryptocurrencies should no longer be anonymous even from one cent, EU Parliament committees demand. Unlike the EU Commission, relevant committees of the EU Parliament do not want any exceptions to apply to the identification requirement for crypto transactions. The EU Commission had proposed an exemption limit of 1,000 euros. The background to all the considerations is a package of regulations proposed by the EU Commission last summer. Like the German Crypto Transfers Ordinance (KryptoTransferV), which Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) proposed while still Finance Minister at the time, the EU regulation essentially deals with crypto service providers. When buying and selling crypto-assets, they are supposed to collect the data of the persons involved, keep it and transfer it to an authority upon request. Blackrock ($BLK) - Asset manager Blackrock is involved in the store network operator of Audi ($AUDVF), BWM ($BMW (-0.12%)) and Daimler ($DAII (-1.35%)), Ionity. According to a statement from the U.S. investor and the previous owners, 700 million euros were invested in the company. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche ($POAHY (+0.55%)) as well as Ford ($F (-0.67%)) and Hyundai ($HYU) have stakes in the joint venture, which was founded in 2017. Ionity aims to increase the number of charging stations more than fourfold to around 7,000 by 2025. Yum! Brands, Inc. was founded in 1997 and is the world's largest foodservice group.

The company includes Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, The Habit Burger Grill and Yum Restaurants International ltd.

But how did the company come into being in the first place? PepsiCo had a hand in this, as Pepsi had bought out KFC, Pizzahut and Taco Bell. By 1986, PepsiCo was then the largest restaurant operator in the world. In 1997, however, the company decided to focus more on its core business again and therefore floated the restaurant chains on the stock market under the new parent company Tricon Global Restaurants Inc. In 2002, the company was renamed Yum! Brands.

Today, the company has more than 45,000 restaurants in 130 countries. The group's main headquarters are in Louisville.

🤖 Robot deployment: Mastercard and Yum! Brands collaborated to develop a human-like robot named Pepper. In 2016, they began using Pepper in select Pizza Hut stores in Asia. The robot greets customers, takes orders, and handles the payment process.
