McDonald's $MCD (+0.58%) is one of my top 3 positions in the portfolio and not without reason:

The Group has stood for stability, strong dividends and global brand power for decades.

But even McDonald's is not immune to inflation, consumer restraint and macroeconomic headwinds.

In the following article, I categorize the Q1 figures based on the official earnings release [1] and supplementary statements from the earnings call/webcast [2].

In addition to the pure figures, it's also about loyalty programs, margin development, new menu strategies and my personal conclusion on the share.

McDonald's is starting the new year with a decline in sales and profits, with business weakening in the USA in particular. Nevertheless, the company is showing global resilience, particularly through its licensed markets and the rapidly growing loyalty program.

📊 ESTIMATES VS. REPORTED

*(According to the earnings report, operating profit (EBIT) amounted to $2.65 billion; the third-party provider Quartr states a slightly different figure of $2.71 billion, which may be due to rounding or other valuation measures).

📊 Results Q1 2025

• Turnover$5.96 billion (previous year: $6.17 billion) -> decline of 3%

• Operating profit (EBIT): $2.65 billion (previous year: $2.74 billion) -> decrease of 3%

What is GAAP vs. non-GAAP?

• GAAP: official accounting in accordance with US accounting rules
• Non-GAAP: adjusted figures, e.g. without special effects such as restructuring costs, often better suited to evaluate the "operating business"

💰 Margin & result

"Our adjusted operating margin was around 45.5%, despite declining sales."

• Operating margin down slightly (vs. 46.3% in FY 2024), but remains very robust given the environment
• Restaurant margins above $3.3 billion in Q1
• Declines in company-operated margins, especially in Europe (see brief digression)

EXCURSUS: Company-operated margin: (operating margin from company-owned restaurants)

...refers to the profit margin that McDonald's generates from the restaurants it operates itself, as opposed to franchise or licensed operations.

McDonald's operates two types of restaurants worldwide:

1 . Franchise restaurants (around 95%)

• Operated by independent entrepreneurs.
• McDonald's earns from this through franchise fees, rent and revenue sharing.

2 . Company-operated restaurants (approx. 5 %)

• Belong directly to McDonald's
• Sales and costs run entirely through the consolidated balance sheet.

Why is this margin important?

• It shows how profitable McDonald's own stores are.
• If, for example, costs for staff, food or energy rise, this puts pressure on this margin.
• In the earnings call, it was emphasized that company-operated margins were under pressure in Q1, particularly in Europe:

• cost inflation
• weaker demand
• unfavorable exchange rates

🌍 Global comparative figures (Comparable Sales):

• These are sales from existing restaurants that have been open for at least 13 months. They show organic growth without the effect of new locations.

• Worldwide: -1.0 %
• USA: -3.6 %

• International Operated Markets (IOM): -1.0 %
• International Developmental Licensed Markets (IDL): +3.5 %

What are IOM and IDL markets?

• IOM: Countries and regions in which McDonalds itself is more heavily involved (e.g. Germany, UK, France)

• IDL: Countries in which McDonald's does not operate its restaurants itself, but licenses them to local franchise partners. These partners pay fees to McDonald's but run the business independently. Examples: Japan, Middle East, parts of Asia and Africa.

📉 Why did things go worse in the USA?

The decline in sales in the USA (-3.6 % comparable sales) was mainly due to:

• Fewer guests (falling visitor numbers)
• Consumer restraint among lower income groups
• Price increases in the previous year, which are now increasingly deterring customers
• Fewer orders per visit & fewer premium products in the shopping basket (weaker product mix)

🌐 System-wide sales (system-wide sales):

• This comprises the total sales of all McDonald's restaurants, i.e. both existing and new locations, regardless of whether they are operated by McDonald's itself or by franchise partners.

• Q1 2025: -1 %
• but: +1 % at constant exchange rates

What does this mean?

Without the influence of fluctuating exchange rates, sales would have increased by 1 %. Calculated in US dollars, for example, a weak euro has a negative impact, even though the local business is stable.

🔁 Leap Day distorts comparison:

2024 was a leap year with February 29 (Leap Day), which means one more day of sales compared to 2025, making the previous year's base appear artificially higher. This makes the decline in sales appear larger than it actually is.

🎯 Loyalty program, McDonald's digital joker

Via the app or with a customer account, users receive loyalty points for their orders, which they can exchange for free products or discounts, similar to Payback but with burgers.

• $8 billion in sales in Q1 2025 with loyalty members
• $31 billion in the last 12 months
• 175 million active users (in the last 90 days), measured on a rolling basis

Why is the revenue from loyalty members higher than the Group revenue of $5.96 bn?

• The $8 billion are system sales (Systemwide Sales see above, i.e. the total sales of all McDonald's restaurants worldwide, including franchise operations.

• McDonald's Group revenue ($5.96 billion) only includes the revenue of the company itself (e.g. franchise fees & revenue from own stores).

➡ The high loyalty revenue shows how strong customer loyalty and app usage have become and how important this digital strategy is for McDonald's future.

➡️ Loyalty customers order more frequently, spend more and are less price-sensitive. The program helps McDonald's to stabilize sales and retain customers, especially in difficult economic times.

💳 Consumer climate & customer behavior

"In contrast to a few months ago, spending by middle-class consumers has now fallen almost as sharply as that of low-income households."

• Macroeconomic pressure & geopolitical uncertainty are impacting the QSR environment more than expected.
• Low- and middle-income customers are spending significantly less - especially in the USA.
• High-income customers remain relatively stable.

UnderstandingWhat is the QSR environment?

QSR = Quick Service Restaurant

This refers to the quick service restaurant sector, e.g. McDonald's, Burger King, Subway, KFC, etc.

When the "QSR industry" is mentioned in the earnings call, this refers to the competition and demand in the global fast food sector.

The "QSR environment" includes:

• Consumer behavior (how often do people go out to eat?)
• competitive pressure
• pricing strategies
• Costs (e.g. for raw materials, wages, rents)

🔎 Interim conclusion so far:

As expected, the figures show a challenging quarter with declines in sales and earnings in almost all core markets.

The USA in particular suffered from inflation, price pressure and weaker demand.

At the same time, McDonald's remains remarkably profitable with an operating margin of 45.5 %, which speaks for the resilience of the business model.

Growth in the licensed markets (IDL) and the strong loyalty program provide clear rays of hope.

For me, these are the first signs that McDonald's is structurally well positioned, even if the short-term momentum is currently slowing.

📌 Personal conclusion

In the first quarter, McDonald's showed that even a giant can come under pressure, especially in a weak economic environment with declining visitor numbers in the US and Europe.

Nevertheless, the share price has remained relatively stable.

At the same time, I am convinced by the long-term levers:

the strong loyalty program, targeted pricing models and the international expansion in licensed markets (IDL), which are growing solidly.

I am continuing to hold my position, as McDonald's remains a robust basic investment for me.

However, there will be no further acquisitions at the moment, as I would first like to see margins and customer numbers stabilize in the long term.

The managers at McDonald's and Burger King are pricking up their ears. A competitor suddenly makes its way to Germany.

The year 2024 is history, now 2025 is just around the corner! And in the year just ended, there were a few stories that moved people. These included the launch of a new fast food chain in Germany - the people in charge at McDonald's, Burger King and Co. are keeping a very close eye on it.

If you love fast food, you can't get past McDonald's and Burger King. The two companies are probably the best-known chains when it comes to burgers, fries and the like. But will this soon come to an end? The competition is now on the rise!

McDonald's, Burger King and co.: competitor with a different cuisine

In May 2024, the news made the rounds: Taco Bell is coming to Germany! This means that after McDonald's, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut, the next fast food provider is coming to our country.

Although Taco Bell does not have the same range as McDonald's and Burger King, with its Mexican cuisine (burritos, tacos and co.), Taco Bell could steal customers away from McDonald's, Burger King and co. in some places.

McDonald's, Burger King and co.: Taco Bell had to postpone its opening

While it was still said in spring 2024 that the first Taco Bell branch would open in Berlin in midsummer 2024, things look different at the beginning of 2025: According to the dpa, IS-Holding (ISH) does not want to open the first Taco Bell branch in Berlin until summer 2025. ISH owns the franchise rights for Germany.

In 1981, McDonald's and Burger King went to war.

Burger King hired a 5-year-old girl for an ironic commercial.

McDonald's then sued the five-year-old.

This was the beginning of the most expensive fast food war in history.

McDonald's dominates the fast food market with its iconic golden arches and Happy Meals.

But Burger King was tired of playing second fiddle.

So they published an ad that would start a decades-long war:

They hired 5-year-old Sarah Michelle Gellar (some may remember her) to do something unprecedented:

They attacked McDonald's by name on national television.

In the ad, she compared McDonald's burgers to Burger King's, claiming they were 20 percent smaller.

What happened next would change fast food marketing forever ...

McDonald's immediately filed a lawsuit:

- Burger King

- Their advertising agency

- And yes, even 5-year-old Sarah Michelle Gellar herself

"I was the first person to mention another competitor's name on a job," Gellar later recalled.

But that was just the beginning ...

The legal dispute triggered the so-called "Burger War".

Both chains have abandoned their traditional family-friendly marketing.

Before 1980, both focused on positive campaigns - McDonald's with Happy Meals, Burger King with "Have it Your Way".

In 1984, McDonald's launched its counterattack:

The McDLT - a direct competitor to the Whopper.

The innovation? A unique two-chamber packaging:

- Warm side dish: burger and bottom bun

- Cool side dish: lettuce, tomato and top bun

"Keep the hot side hot and the cool side cool."

They put EVERYTHING on the McDLT:

80-100 million dollars were spent on the campaign.

Convinced Jason Alexander to perform a Broadway-style musical commercial, years before his Seinfeld fame.

The burger sold for $1.49 (about $3.60 today).

But there was a problem ...

McDLT's innovative packaging was made of polystyrene.

As environmental awareness grew at the end of the 1980s, McDonald's came under increasing pressure.

They discontinued production of the product in December 1990 and replaced it with the McLean Deluxe.

Meanwhile, Burger King was preparing its own disaster ...

In 1985, Burger King launched the "Where's Herb?" campaign.

The concept? A promotional campaign to find Herb - a fictional character who has never eaten a Whopper.

Customers could get Whoppers at a reduced price by saying "I'm not Herb" when ordering.

However, there was one big problem:

No one knew what Herb looked like until he was unveiled at Super Bowl XX in January 1986.

The campaign left customers completely confused.

It became known as one of the worst marketing failures in history.

It was their last campaign with the agency J. Walter Thompson.

The rivalry led to unprecedented innovations in the fast food sector:

- New packaging technology such as the McDLT's double compartment

- Creative marketing approaches

- Menu diversification

- Focus on food quality

Both chains were forced to evolve or die.

The burger wars have shown us something crucial:

Innovation is not just about products.

It's about how you tell your story.

And in today's digital age, this is more important than ever.

Expenditure/Revenue Recap 2022

Money is what people talk about! #recap2022

In the sense of getquin, which allows us all not only to track our own portfolios, but also to discuss money and investments.

First I want to talk about my income, then about my expenses and be as transparent as possible.

(For tracking I use Finanzguruwhich I use since May)

First my income:

In 2022 I have 55.222,26€ received.

My main source of income is my work in the white collar relationship, there I have 40.464,78€ received (December salary outstanding). The rest came from "rental income" of my girlfriend, tax office, profits (shares, sweepstakes, Ebay) and Co.

The income point is I think but not as interesting as the expenditure point:

My expenses:

In 2022 I have 58.218,25€ spent.

The biggest chunk with 19.334€ lies there with the Living. The rent is always deducted in full from my account, my girlfriend then transfers your part. In total, I / we have paid 9,463 € in rent, and moved in April together. The Deposit from 2.550€ I took over alone (Rheinmetall 7er lever of March runs) and the largest part of the furnishings with 5.686€.

The rest comes from electricity, parking and miscellaneous.

Next comes Invest with 10.046€.

There went 8.213€ to TradeRepublic, 1.148€ in Crypto, 380€ in gold/silver and my little old building society contract was allowed to settle with 300€ happy.

The third point is 7.349€
InsurancesThis includes private health insurance and pension insurance, which is why the amount is so gigantic.

The PKV takes since August 3.487€ and the RV
2.425€Thus remain occupational disability with 784 €, legal protection, accident and liability with a total of 651 €.

Let's move on to a nicer point: Shopping with 6.229€

This of course includes forever of small items.

The ones that stick out are a new cell phone from $AAPL , a lot of $AMZN (+0.34%) and $EBAY (+2.24%) clothing $YOU (-0.07%)
$ASC (-2.02%) and a lot of untitled stuff from $PYPL (-0.36%) and Klarna.

But also some gifts for friends and family.

Right after even better: Food with 3.624€

3.315€ went to supermarkets and discounters (I work in a grocery store, so I see a lot of great and tasty things every day) and 262€ to $HFG (-1.92%)

2.913€ are for travel have been spent.

Of course beautifully well-behaved with $ABNB (+1.91%) !

Likewise, a vacation is included, which I will make only in February 23, but is already paid 🎌.

Finances and taxes forms a small loan from my dad, which I paid him back and Donations for good causes with 2.765€.

The 2.428€ at leisure expenses include books, subscriptions to $NFLX (+1.62%)
$GOOGL (+1.45%)
$AAPL (+3.49%)
$AMZN (+0.34%) and $DIS (-0.67%) , ventures, sports, hobbies, hairdresser, cinema and Rock in the Park.

The last of the major items that remain are Restaurants with 1.266€. The most went real restaurants at home and abroad with 684€ and 582€ to fast food from $MCD (+0.58%)
$DPZ (+0.42%)
$SBUX (+1.74%)
$RBD (-2.14%) and $YUM (+0.65%)

The rest are then still smaller other expenses.

So... Holy Moly, that took longer than expected 😂.

I think I just took over an hour for all the analyses and the written record, but I think that I have also learned something from it.

Overall, I think that the expenses were ok, especially for the circumstances this year.

Next year I will invest and travel more and spend less on the apartment.

As of today, among others, Shell PLC ($RDSA), 3M Company ($MMM (+1.55%)) and Yum! Brands Inc. ($YUM (+0.65%)) are trading ex-dividend.

𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 🏛️

NVIDIA ($NVDA (+0.44%)) - The chip company delivered quarterly results yesterday. Revenue rose 53 percent to just over $7.6 billion (€6.7 billion) in the fourth fiscal quarter ended in late January. The bottom line was the profit of three billion dollars even slightly more than twice as high as in the same quarter last year. For the current quarter, NVIDIA held out the prospect of a further increase in sales to 8.1 billion dollars - while analysts had rather expected around 7.3 billion dollars.

Commerzbank ($CBK (+0.39%)) - The bank posted a profit of 430 million euros in 2021, compared with a loss of 2.9 billion in the prior-year period. Operating profit was 1.18 billion euros, after the bank had posted a loss of 233 million euros in the previous year. Commerzbank CEO Manfred Knof said: "2022 will be a decisive year in the implementation of our strategy," "We want to build on last year's successful customer business and increase consolidated profit to more than 1 billion euros."

EU - Payments with cryptocurrencies should no longer be anonymous even from one cent, EU Parliament committees demand. Unlike the EU Commission, relevant committees of the EU Parliament do not want any exceptions to apply to the identification requirement for crypto transactions. The EU Commission had proposed an exemption limit of 1,000 euros. The background to all the considerations is a package of regulations proposed by the EU Commission last summer. Like the German Crypto Transfers Ordinance (KryptoTransferV), which Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) proposed while still Finance Minister at the time, the EU regulation essentially deals with crypto service providers. When buying and selling crypto-assets, they are supposed to collect the data of the persons involved, keep it and transfer it to an authority upon request. According to the expectations of the politicians, this should result in transparent traceability, which should take into account the state's interests in fighting crime.

For fiscal year 2022, the company expects consolidated earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of EUR 25 million to EUR 30 million.

Today, among others, HUAZHU Hotels Group ($CL4A (+1.85%)) and John Deere ($DE (-0.66%)) present their figures.

𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 🏛️

Blackrock ($BLK) - Asset manager Blackrock is involved in the store network operator of Audi ($AUDVF), BWM ($BMW (-1.88%)) and Daimler ($DAII (-1.93%)), Ionity. According to a statement from the U.S. investor and the previous owners, 700 million euros were invested in the company. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche ($POAHY (-3.11%)) as well as Ford ($F (-0.8%)) and Hyundai ($HYU) have stakes in the joint venture, which was founded in 2017. Ionity aims to increase the number of charging stations more than fourfold to around 7,000 by 2025. Own land to be acquired will serve the station concept and enable charging not only along highways, but also near major cities and along busy trunk roads.

Samsung ($SSUN (+0.88%)) - Samsung plans to build a new chip factory in the USA. A semiconductor shortage and supply problems are holding back the global economy's recovery. Australia - The Rest Super retirement fund invests in cryptocurrencies for its 1.8 million members. The fund manages more than $46.8 billion in assets. The company's CIO, Andrew Lill said he sees digital assets as an "important part" of the portfolio, but it is still a very volatile asset class. As a result, investing in cryptocurrencies will initially make up a relatively small allocation, as part of the diversified portfolio, which can build over time.

South Korea - The South Korean Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) has determined that NFTs will be subject to taxation starting next year. After classifying NFTs as virtual assets, Korean lawmakers plan to levy taxes on them. Starting Jan. 1, 2022, taxes of 20 percent will be due on NFT sales that exceed 2.5 million won ($2,102). South Korea has recently taken many measures to regulate the crypto market in order to target money laundering. As the NFT market rapidly expands in South Korea and globally, the regulation vs. innovation debate remains contentious.

Pizzahut & KFC in the depot?

Yum! Brands, Inc. was founded in 1997 and is the world's largest foodservice group.

The company includes Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, The Habit Burger Grill and Yum Restaurants International ltd.

But how did the company come into being in the first place? PepsiCo had a hand in this, as Pepsi had bought out KFC, Pizzahut and Taco Bell. By 1986, PepsiCo was then the largest restaurant operator in the world. In 1997, however, the company decided to focus more on its core business again and therefore floated the restaurant chains on the stock market under the new parent company Tricon Global Restaurants Inc. In 2002, the company was renamed Yum! Brands.

Today, the company has more than 45,000 restaurants in 130 countries. The group's main headquarters are in Louisville.

🤖 Robot deployment: Mastercard and Yum! Brands collaborated to develop a human-like robot named Pepper. In 2016, they began using Pepper in select Pizza Hut stores in Asia. The robot greets customers, takes orders, and handles the payment process.
