Last year, I stood in front of my depot and asked myself: What is actually still missing?

Tech? Checked off. Dividends? Yes. Growth stocks? Also included.

But somehow I was still missing a real value stock with a defensive character. One that also sleeps peacefully when the stock market is rattling. 😴📉

💡 Then it occurred to me: "What always works - regardless of whether it's a crisis, war or consumer restraint?"

➡️ That's right: parcels.

And that's how I came across UPS.

What convinced me:

• 💰 Stable dividend (currently over 4% - a real haven of peace in times of uncertainty)
• 🌍 Global presence - not only in the B2C sector, but also strong in B2B & healthcare
• ⚙️ Efficiency programmes & digitalization - could stabilize margins in the long term

But of course there are also downsides:

• ⛽ Cost structure is high - energy, personnel, inflation...
• 📉 Parcel volume declining after the corona boom
• 🏋️‍♂️ Competition with Amazon is exerting pressure - they are constantly expanding their own delivery fleet

🔁 Conclusion for me:

Not a high flyer, but a solid anchor in the portfolio. I see $UPS (-0.17%) as a dividend play with turnaround potential, especially when the economy picks up again.

BEFORE: I have completely revised my portfolio review. There are now even more in-depth figures to see and I have greatly reduced the body text. Only my introduction is a little more detailed. For me, May was characterized by calm and composure, because I kept the noise of the markets and US trade policy away from me. I can do no more than simply buy more. I like to refer here to the stoic way of thinking, which focuses on prioritizing what you can influence. And that is my personal development. So that meant doing sport (at home with YouTube cardio and strength, abs, core, running), stockpiling Instagram posts so that I have some breathing space in the summer and delving deeper into the topic of AI. And the tax return was also completed. Meanwhile, dividends have been stable with the second strongest month ever, which was April. Time for a deep dive into my figures.

My income from dividends amounted to € 163.13 (€ 89.68 in the same month last year). This corresponds to an increase of +42.32 % compared to the same month last year. The following is further key data on the distributions:

Crypto performance

My crypto investments also moved a little:

• Proportion of holdings for which the tax holding period has expired: 100%. This means that there have been no additional purchases for over a year.
• Crypto share of the total portfolio: 2.23%

I find the topic exciting, but it is very underrepresented in my overall portfolio due to my strategy. Profits have long since been realized, my focus here has long been elsewhere. Accumulation will take place in the coming bear market.

A comparison of my portfolio with two important ETFs shows:

Outlook and conclusion

According to the tax estimate, I can expect a tax refund. When this arrives, part of it will be donated and the rest will of course be reinvested. May was also a no-spend month for me and, as a convinced frugalist, this went off without a hitch. I was able to reflect more closely on my spending behavior and even found further potential despite my basic low spend attitude. Now I'm preparing a Hartz IV/citizen's allowance experiment for at least 3-4 months (or more) for the second half of the year. Simply because I feel like challenging myself. My planned expenses and provisions according to the budget only just exceed my theoretical entitlement to citizen's allowance. More info coming soon on Instagram. After March and April, I was again able to record expenses of less than €1,000 per month in May. This will change in June due to a large annual insurance premium, but maybe I'll be lucky and stay at a maximum of €1,100 to €1,200. As in the previous months, I will continue to use the early summer in June for hiking, swimming and day trips.

Many investors dream of early retirement - financed by regular dividend payouts. But which strategy will get you there faster? A high dividend yield or a consistent dividend increase? The answer depends heavily on individual goals, the investment horizon and personal circumstances.

🔹 Dividend yield

The dividend yield indicates what percentage of the current share price is paid out as a dividend. Companies with a high dividend yield often pay out a large proportion of their profits and cash flow to their shareholders. This is particularly common for large companies and in sectors such as utilities, telecommunications or REITs.

🚨 Attention:

A high payout may mean that the company has hardly any growth opportunities or does not know how to use the capital efficiently. There is also a risk of dividend cuts in difficult economic times.

🔹 Dividend increase

Dividend growth measures how strongly a company's distributions grow over the years. Companies with a high dividend growth rate often start with a lower initial yield, but offer a higher personal dividend yield in the long term.

✅ Advantages:

These companies are usually smaller, grow faster and only pay out a moderate proportion of their profits. This leaves more capital for expansion and future dividend increases. In the long term, investors benefit not only from rising dividends, but often also from a better share price performance.

Which strategy is better for early retirement?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer - the choice depends on the individual situation:

✅ Short-term income strategy:

Those who already want to live off dividends today are more likely to focus on companies with high dividend yields.

✅ Long-term wealth accumulation:

If you have the time, you can focus on dividend growth to generate a strong passive income in the long term.

My personal approach

I pay attention not only to the dividend yield and increase, but also to sustainable growth in profits and sales. It is also crucial that the dividend is covered by free cash flow. For investment-intensive sectors, I use the operating cash flow as a benchmark, for REITs the funds from operations (FFO).

vs. $ODFL (-0.33%)

To compare theory with practice, I compare UPS and ODFL - two industry-related companies from the transportation sector.

📌 UPS stands for a company with a higher dividend yield.

📌ODFL on the other hand, stands for a company with a higher dividend increase.

As can be seen from the charts, the pattern described is confirmed:

📉 UPS offers an attractive dividend yield in the short term, but in view of the weak share price performance, this could be seen more as "pain and suffering".

📈 ODFL on the other hand, is growing more dynamically, continuously increasing its dividend and at the same time showing a significantly better and more stable share price performance.

➡️ Conclusion:

At first glance, the high dividend yield strategy may appear more tempting, as it generates higher payouts in the short term. However, a look at the long-term development shows a different picture.

Anyone who has invested in the last 10 years on $UPS (-0.17%) have actually been able to achieve a higher cumulative dividend yield.

But over a period of 20 years the ratio is reversed: Due to the steady increase in dividends, the payout grows at $ODFL (-0.33%) so strongly that the dividend yield calculated on the original investment is significantly higher than for $UPS (-0.17%) .

In addition to the higher dividend income, investors in $ODFL (-0.33%) also benefit from a significantly better and more stable share price performance, which further increases the overall return potential. This example shows that it pays off in the long term to invest in companies with solid dividend increases and sustainable growth.

Happy Sunday to the community. I am currently looking at $O (-0.47%) and things are not going so well for the REIT at the moment. The next quarterly figures will be announced on February 24th, so I'll wait and see. I will (hopefully) not make the mistake $UPS (-0.17%) I (hopefully) won't make the same mistake again. I took a look at the key interest rate in the USA and it is currently really high. On 27.07.23 it was at 5.5%, but it's currently falling again. Is this related to real estate rentals, or is it the mortgage rate? It is also currently over 7%. I'm sorry if I come across as a bit inexperienced, but I've only been involved in the real estate market for a short time😅
