Scott Technology $SCT has secured its third automation project with Rio Tinto $RIO (+0.51%) in Australia. This time it is for the automation of the minerals laboratory at the West Angelas Mine. Led by Scott's Rocklabs business, the project is designed to improve safety and optimize laboratory operations - leading to better operational outcomes across the site, in line with Rio Tinto's commitment to sustainable mining practices.

The semi-automated Rocklabs system consists of two Rio 350 crushers and three ABM 3000 pulverizers, which can process up to 700 samples per day. This system ensures consistent, high-quality data that enables smarter decision making and optimization of site performance. By reducing manual handling, the system lowers the risk of human error and improves operational efficiency. The enclosed design, combined with advanced dust extraction technology, further reduces silica exposure, underlining Rio Tinto's commitment to workers.
Located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, the West Angelas mine is an important hub for Rio Tinto's iron ore operations and contributes significantly to the company's overall production with an annual production capacity of almost 30 million tons. The mine plays a key role in supporting Rio Tinto's supply chain and global demand for iron ore. This latest collaboration builds on the proven success of previous automation projects at Rio Tinto's Gudai Darri and Robe Valley sites, where advanced technologies have already demonstrated their ability to improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of mining operations.
