ALK-Abelló is a Danish allergy pharmaceutical company, over a century old, with more than 2,700 employees, and listed on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange. It may sound unspectacular, but it is by far the largest player in its field: accounting for around 45% of global sales of allergy immunotherapy. Stallergenes Greer, HAL Allergy, and Allergy Therapeutics share the rest.
The difference from standard allergy treatments lies in the therapeutic approach. Antihistamines suppress symptoms. $ALK B (-0.59%) trains the immune system over years to tolerate the allergen—that is, to address the root cause. This is achieved through three product groups: the classic injections and drops, the newer tablets for grass, dust mites, and tree pollen, and emergency products for anaphylactic reactions.
The key figure driving the entire market is the treatment rate. 30 to 40% of the world’s population has at least one allergy; allergic rhinitis alone affects about 500 million people. According to ALK, only about 1% of these cases are treated with immunotherapy. The market itself is currently worth about $2.8 billion and is projected to grow to $4.7 to $5 billion by 2030, but that’s not the point. The point is that the demand has long been there but is simply not being translated into treatment. Allergies are underdiagnosed and undertreated. Whoever changes that won’t gain market share—they’ll expand the market.
This is precisely the goal of the Allergy+ strategy, which the Executive Board adopted in 2024 with financial targets through 2028: maintain leadership in respiratory allergies while expanding into food allergies and anaphylaxis, achieving long-term double-digit growth with stable to rising margins. The key is the product mix. Injections are manual and labor-intensive; tablets can be scaled industrially, yield higher margins, and must be approved country by country—a new hurdle for copycats each time.
On top of that are two bets that don’t necessarily have to pay off for the plan to work. The peanut tablet has passed Phase 2; Phase 3 starts at the end of 2026. Peanut allergy is a large, underserved market, and the current standard of care is cumbersome. Then there’s EURneffy, an adrenaline nasal spray as an alternative to the auto-injector, with EU approval for children aged 4 and up, launching in the second half of 2026.
What speaks against it: ALK isn’t cheap; its quality is well-known and factored into the price. The leap from a 1% to a 20% treatment rate is a ten-year journey, not a sure thing, and depends on doctors, reimbursement, and whether patients stick with therapy for several years. Price and discount pressure from health insurers remains. And a Phase 3 failure for the peanut tablet would be reflected in the stock price, because part of that is already factored in.
For me, this is a business where the question isn’t whether it works, but how quickly. Anyone buying here is buying into the treatment rate over the next decade, not the next quarter.
