@Simpson A €200 fill-up is currently a normal tank of gas for our bus, and it doesn't just get one of those once a month 🫣 That's why I got a Stormer a few months ago as my "mom car." With solar power, I drive for €25 a month 😅

@Raketentoni And you even get a GHG credit. If you can charge for free (e.g., using a solar panel system), then you actually make money by charging. Yeah, OK, that’s putting it a bit naively, but it’s not all that far off the mark.

After giving it some thought: I find Option 1 very appealing! 😉
I recently spent 150 euros on just one tank of gas. Ouch—yeah, that really stings. You could buy a lot of Duff or $DSRT with that.

We live in the countryside.
We’re thinking of getting an electric car since our trips are short.
Our first car is a gas-powered Passat.

@He-Man If you're looking for an electric car, I can only recommend Tesla. The base model or a used Model 3 is attractively priced compared to European electric compact cars.
You also save on annual maintenance costs, get excellent fuel economy, and very low energy consumption (13–14 kWh/100 km in real-world driving = €3.90).
Depending on the size you need, it can easily fit a kids’ bike, a week’s worth of groceries, and more.

@He-Man I'm a big fan of the new Renault R5. If you need a little more range, the ID Polo or an electric Citroën C3 are good options. I also really enjoyed driving the discontinued BMW i3.

But I think that no matter where you look, every major manufacturer is just starting to enter the electric compact car market. Just take a look around and compare which one suits you best. - VW ID.3/Cupra Born, Nissan Micra, Fiat Grande Panda, Fiat 500e, Renault Twingo

I drove a Model Y Long Range Premium for 3 years. I charged it exclusively at Superchargers and never had any problems. Design is a matter of taste. The build quality was okay. The infotainment system is the best I’ve ever experienced, and I’ve leased cars that cost three times as much.

The facelift on the Premium model has improved many of the little things that bothered me, so for me, it’s actually the perfect car. However, the price isn’t quite as attractive, unfortunately. The list price is around 55–60k; so far, discounts have only been available on the Standard trim. That actually makes Chinese brands interesting again—especially Xpeng, in my opinion. German automakers are, unfortunately, completely out of the running price-wise.

Driving an electric car was pleasant, despite the charging. With your own PV system or convenient charging at work, it’s unbeatable.

Unfortunately, the government is going to make it less attractive again by introducing taxes on electric kilometers driven… first heavily subsidizing it, then stopping, and now heavily subsidizing it again only to make it less attractive once more 🫡

Currently, a liter of diesel in Germany is taxed at 47.04 cents, and a liter of gasoline at 65.45 cents. On top of that, there’s a CO2 tax and a 19 percent value-added tax. With gasoline priced at 2.10 euros, the tax portion amounts to 1.14 euros, according to the ADAC—more than half the price.

Oil companies have doubled or tripled their profits in recent months. The only tax that causes fuel costs to rise even further is the value-added tax. All other taxes are fixed.

I sold my old clunker 7 years ago and have been using public transportation ever since. It’s both more eco-friendly and cheaper.
If I ever do need a car, I use $SIX2 or a car-sharing service.

That way, I’ve saved about 30,000 € on transportation costs to date.

It takes some getting used to at first, but now I actually enjoy not having to sit behind the wheel, since I can use my time so much more effectively.

For anyone who has access to these services, just de-register your car for 3–6 months and see how it goes—7 years ago, I couldn’t have imagined life without my own car. 😘

@TotallyLost If you have the chance, that's the best thing you can do.
It would take me 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes to get to the office by public transportation. By car, it's 25 minutes.
It's also helpful for grocery shopping (we have two kids). A car really comes in handy.

But right now we have two cars. We could easily cut back to one. I find having two cars a hassle. And most of the time, we only need one at most. My fiancée and I have agreed to see how things go with just one once the first one gives out.

With gas prices like this, I ride my bike (9 km) to work. But it’s funny—the more expensive gas gets, the more returnable bottles I find in the trash at work. Well, it’s a classic win-win for me: I don’t spend a dime on gas anymore, and I even find other people’s money in the trash 😄
