Hello friends of the stock market,

I need your advice: I've been invested since last year and suddenly I get mail from the tax office for the first time in my life: tax return 2023.

I've never submitted one before and have never received any mail until now. Now I have until 24.10.24

At Trade Republic, the taxes I had to pay were always deducted automatically. Do I still have to include this in my tax return? I'm completely at a loss and the lady on the phone was really unfriendly.

Thank you in advance 💐

If I get a call before 9:00 a.m., I'm not thrilled either. 😂🙈🤷‍♂️

What does the tax office want, where else have you invested something, how high was your exemption order everywhere...

@AlterMann I am with Trade Republic and Scalable Capital. Taxes were automatically deducted for both, which was quite a lot. Exemption order of 1,000 has been exhausted. The tax office wants a tax return for 2023 by 10/24/2024.

@DividendenMieze Then you will probably have to make one...🤷‍♂️

@DividendenMieze You must have received an annual tax certificate for 2023 from both brokers. I would attach this to your tax return.

@AlterMann Yes, unfortunately. She was so incredibly unfriendly - unbelievable.
profile image
@Metis Okay, then I'll give it a try. I know nothing about it. I've never done one before because it's not worth it for me.

@DividendenMieze I have to admit, I don't know how easy it is with capital gains via Taxfix, but clicking through the basic tax return was pretty easy. You only have to pay from the point where you send it to the office.

@DividendenMieze No need to worry 😌 there are helpful channels to do this.
I've picked out a video for you:

The Wiso tax program is also recommended for standard matters. The question is whether only KAP income or speculation taxes are relevant. Capital gains must be declared. Have you made currency speculations with foreign currencies such as dollars, CHF etc., sold gold or cryptos during the speculation period?

@Dominik_76 regardless of what has to be declared (I haven't declared an FSA and that's why I'm doing it): I just enter everything in WISO, if it's not relevant, it won't be taken into account by the FA.
@DividendenMieze Almost everyone who is in tax class I gets a little bit back on their tax return. My partner also thought there was nothing, but I was able to claim at least €5-600 back from her every year. For an hour's work (you get faster with time), that's an acceptable hourly wage in my opinion.

You've never filed a tax return?
You've missed out on a lot of money...
I've already gotten €1000 back 3 times
Look for someone nearby from Lohnsteuerhilfe, you won't pay much and you can give yourself some work to do

@Therapeut I have often entered my data in tax apps. If you don't have anything to enter, it won't work.
@Therapeut how do you get so much back 😂 at most as an independent/self-employed person
profile image
@Maddy-0 I've been getting 2.5 to 3.5k a year back from the tax office for ages. In earlier times, when I had to commute more for work, I used to get a lot more. Surely (almost) everyone now has work-related expenses, tradesmen's costs or telephone bills? And the state contributes to many things.

@capital_captain_391 @DividendenMieze @Maddy-0
In addition, there is the amount of time off, travel expenses, further training, etc.

@Maddy-0 Steuerbot has now spit out 92 euros for me
profile image
@DividendenMieze Yes, there are still a few points that you don't know as a layman that could help you get a bit more out of it. That's why I let you do it
profile image
@Therapeut having it done costs me more than I can get back 😅

@DividendenMieze There is so much you can deduct from your taxes without having to provide proof. Laundry allowance for work clothes, money for applications (postage and envelopes), books about your job, etc. That way you can get at least 150€ together.

@Hotte1909 So Steuerpot suggested some flat rates to me and I clicked yes everywhere

@DividendenMieze Do you work full time? So 8 hours a day? Then you can normally enter €14 per day as additional meal expenses. Travel to the workplace and so on. There's so much for employees.

WISO tax from Buhl. Self-explanatory, simple and professional. Costs €30 a year, which you usually get back easily. And many times better than the advertised apps such as taxfix or steuerbot. The program explains everything, gives tips and guides you through the whole process in a very simple way. I finished my tax return with all the bells and whistles within an hour at the beginning of January and knew to the cent what I would get back bekomme🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻

@Schumi150 most of them are already available on Amazon for 15-20€

I've also been using WISO for 10 years. And I have no idea about taxes or declarations. So you can see that anyone can do it....

What does the tax office want from you? A tax return?

@Metis Yes, for 2023. I've never done one before and as soon as I invest, I get written to 😩
profile image
@DividendenMieze I've already had to do two because of corona/short-time work... 🥲 At that time, however, without capital investment.
Otherwise, I would check what else the investment income attachment in the tax return would need apart from the brokers' annual tax certificates.

In general, there is no obligation for you to provide information on the portfolio in your tax return. As you correctly assume, the taxes have already been paid.

However, it may make sense to check a few things, for example: if you are a member of the church, you can deduct the church tax paid on the capital gains.

It is also important to check that any losses have been offset correctly and that you have not paid too much tax.

If none of this makes a significant difference to you: all good, you don't have to worry about anything.

I use the online tool from https://www.steuerbot.de for my wife - it's really quick and very easy to use.

Advice from a tax official personally: file retrospectively for the last 3 years and get the money back before it expires.

Of course, you declare everything you have received and hand in your TR documents.

@Bart_S problem: I received sick pay in 2021 and would therefore have been obliged to submit it. I was not notified at the time. According to the taxman, I now have to pay a 500 euro penalty because I'm only submitting it now. Will the penalty be enforced?
profile image
So if you have not been written to, then the processor should be able to suspend the penalty, which is how it is done at our office.

Also, never trust a taxman 😉

@Bart_S then I hope for a nice official...I was definitely not contacted back then. Thanks for the info. I think that's very kind of you, as I've really been thinking about it. I am totally preoccupied and burdened by the subject. I have handed in all 4 years and am now hoping for the best.

Keep your fingers crossed that the other offices in Germany are as nice as we are 🤗

@Bart_S That would be really great. I haven't done a tax return for 17 years. To be honest, I didn't even know that I had to do one with sick pay. Now they've written to me for the first time and it came out that I should have done one a long time ago. We'll see what happens now.

@Trille85 I'm not actually obliged - I've never done one. What the tax office doesn't like now and why I now have to submit one: I was on sick pay for one day in 2023 and the lady said that obliges me + I didn't keep an eye on my VL savings and am therefore 45 euros over the 1,000 euro allowance and, according to the lady at the tax office, that also obliges me to submit a tax return.
