$PYPL (+0.5%) Speculation about a takeover of PayPal is off the table for now. According to Bloomberg reports, the consortium consisting of private equity firm Advent International and payment service provider Stripe has abandoned its plans for a full takeover. An offer of $60.50 per share was on the table, which would have valued PayPal at over $50 billion—one of the largest leveraged buyouts in business history.
The market’s reaction was brutal: The stock plummeted by as much as 14% in after-hours trading, and it fell just as sharply on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange on Friday. Reportedly, the parties could not agree on a price, and there were also concerns regarding regulatory hurdles and financing. Advent, Stripe, and PayPal itself declined to comment officially.
The fact is: Speculation about the takeover has been the main driver of the stock’s price rise in recent weeks (+40% for the quarter). Now that this catalyst has faded, the focus is shifting back to the operating figures and the company’s self-driven turnaround.
However, the issue doesn’t seem to be completely off the table—if market conditions improve, the consortium could return with a new offer later on.
What do you think, community? 🤔
Do you see the price drop as a buying opportunity now that the takeover premium is gone? Or do you think PayPal will face fundamental challenges without the deal? Have you held onto your position, added to it, or reduced it? Let me know your thoughts!
