Hi,

Regarding Ellington Financial (EFC)—because, at first glance, that 11.4% monthly yield naturally looks extremely tempting.

I just ran the stock through my analysis engine, and the result is a clear red flag. 🛑

Here are the hard facts on why this stock gets an immediate thumbs-down from me:

No “concrete gold”: This is an mREIT. They don’t own any real estate; instead, they engage in highly complex juggling acts with mortgage securities and interest rate differentials.

The deal-breaker: Operating cash flow is negative. The hefty dividend is absolutely not covered by cash flow (payout ratio > 100%).

Erosion of equity: The structure is ruthlessly draining its own equity just to somehow maintain the monthly distributions.

Conclusion: A classic yield trap. Anyone looking for reliable cash machines to form the foundation of their portfolio will only get burned here. The story overshadows the numbers—this isn’t going into my portfolio!

@stock_virtuoso_1968 I put 2k into it about 3 months ago, so it's no big deal if they "disappear" from the scene
