AMBA Earnings

One of my Edge AI picks $AMBA (-1,35%) has just reported its figures. Its core business is slowly gaining momentum and continues to shift from being a niche chip manufacturer to a broad-based Edge AI platform provider. The company wasn’t profitable for years because it poured an enormous amount of money into R&D (research).

1. Key Takeaway

Ambarella reports significantly better results than in the previous year. The company is growing again—primarily thanks to its edge AI chips for automotive and IoT applications.

💰 2. Revenue and Profit Trends

  • Revenue: $108.1 million → +13% compared to the previous year. → This shows that demand for Ambarella’s AI chips is picking up again.
  • GAAP net income: (6.7) million USD loss → significantly better than (20) million USD in the previous year. → Losses are shrinking, and operations are stabilizing.
  • Non-GAAP earnings: $8.2 million profit → +28% compared to the previous year. → On an adjusted basis (excluding stock-based compensation, etc.), Ambarella is back in the black.

⚙️ 3. Margins

  • Gross margin (GAAP): slightly down (57.7% → 58.9%).
  • Gross margin (non-GAAP): also slightly lower (59.3% → 60.5%). → This means: Profitability per chip is slightly lower, but volume makes up for it.

🧾 4. One-time effect

Ambarella had a one-time $9 million credit effect in R&D expenses because a development project was completed. This is non-recurring and was therefore excluded from the adjusted figures.

🔮 5. Outlook (Q3 FY 2027)

  • Revenue: $115–124 million expected → continued growth.
  • Non-GAAP gross margin: 59–60% → stable.
  • Non-GAAP operating expenses: $56.5–59.5 million → Controlled costs.

This indicates that Ambarella expects further revenue growthwithout costs spiraling out of control.

🚀 6. Strategic Statements

CEO Fermi Wang emphasizes:

  • Edge AI revenue at record levels thanks to new 5 nm chips (CV75, CV72).
  • Introduction of the X7 AI Accelerator → Entry into dedicated AI accelerators.
  • Long-term partnerships with Macnica and CapGemini → Establishment of an indirect sales network.

That all sounds reasonable. It's definitely a better bet than $BRN. Unfortunately, I'm invested in the latter and not in Amba :D
