$NEE (+0,24%) The company released its latest quarterly results today. First, a look at the raw numbers:
- EPS (expected): $1.09
- EPS (reported): $1.15
- Revenue (estimated): 8.19B USD
- Revenue (reported): $7.53B
In terms of EPS, $NEE (+0,24%) clearly exceeded expectations. In terms of revenue, however, the company fell short of the analyst consensus. For me, this reaffirms that, for a high-quality utility, headlines about revenue and EPS tell only part of the investment story. What mattered most to me was whether the operational watchpoints I had set were confirmed. This is precisely where $NEE (+0,24%) convinced me.
Management reaffirmed its full-year outlook and continues to target the upper end of the EPS guidance range of $3.92 to $4.02.
At the same time, the project backlog was expanded once again and now stands at around 35 GW, underscoring the high demand for new energy projects.
I also view the performance of Florida Power & Light as particularly positive, as it continues to benefit from strong electricity demand in Florida. NextEra Energy Resources was also able to continue its growth and benefit from the persistently high demand for renewable energy and storage projects.
Another focus of my pre-earnings post was the rising demand for electricity driven by AI and data centers. Here, too, management confirmed that it is on the right track. $NEE (+0,24%) It reported continued robust demand from major hyperscalers and an extensive pipeline of new data center projects. This suggests that one of the long-term growth drivers I had already mentioned prior to the earnings release is continuing to take shape.
The planned acquisition of Dominion Energy also remains an exciting development. Naturally, it did not yet play a role in operations for the quarter. However, management reaffirmed the strategic importance of the transaction, which (subject to regulatory approvals) would create the world’s largest publicly traded regulated electric utility. In the short term, the market is likely to continue to closely monitor the regulatory hurdles and potential impacts on the balance sheet and capital allocation. In the long term, however, the transaction could further strengthen the company’s position $NEE (+0,24%) in attractive growth regions.
The quarterly results confirm many of the points I had already been focusing on beforehand. I view the confirmed guidance, the continued growth in the project backlog, and the persistently strong demand for electricity infrastructure as particularly positive. The fact that revenue fell slightly short of expectations takes a back seat for me in light of the operational performance.
In my view, four points in particular will remain crucial for the coming quarters: the further development of the project backlog, progress regarding the Dominion merger, the implementation of the ambitious investment plans, and the question of whether $NEE (+0,24%) the company can continue to translate the tailwind from AI and data centers into profitable growth.
For now, my personal assessment remains unchanged. $NEE (+0,24%) remains, in my view, one of the most exciting high-quality companies in the global utilities sector. The stock currently remains on my watchlist. While today’s figures strengthen the investment story, I will continue to keep an eye on the valuation before making an investment.
