MongoDB: What's Behind the More Than 20% Drop in Its Stock Price?

$MDB (-7,29%)

⠀

MongoDB stock fell at times today by 25.1% and is currently trading at around 19.5% lower after CEO Chirantan “CJ” Desai unexpectedly stepped down to take on the role of Chief Enterprise Platform Officer at Meta.

⠀

What Happened

• Desai is leaving MongoDB effective immediately, less than a year after taking office

• Former CEO Dev Ittycheria is once again taking over on an interim basis as President & CEO

• The Board of Directors has begun the search for a permanent successor

• This marks MongoDB’s second CEO change in less than 12 months

• Particularly unfortunate: The departure comes immediately before tomorrow’s Investor Day

⠀

Fundamentally, the situation remains stable for now

MongoDB has also confirmed its guidance for Q3 and the full fiscal year FY27:

⠀

📊 Q3 FY27

• Revenue: $756–761 million vs. $762 million consensus

• Adjusted EPS: $1.57–$1.61 vs. $1.61 consensus

⠀

📅 FY27

• Revenue: $2.990–3.030 billion vs. $3.03 billion (consensus)

• Adjusted EPS: $6.39–$6.58 vs. $6.55 consensus

⠀

The consensus continues to expect revenue growth of around 23%, followed by about 18% in FY28.

⠀

Why the market is reacting so strongly

The sell-off seems less like a reaction to a deterioration in operations and more like a reset of leadership and execution risks.

⠀

MongoDB is currently in a strategically important phase: Atlas continues to grow, the company aims to expand its position in the enterprise sector, and position itself more strongly as a data platform for AI applications.

⠀

The fact that Desai is leaving abruptly during this phase increases uncertainty.

⠀

Why Ittycheria’s Return Is Important

Dev Ittycheria previously led MongoDB from 2014 to 2025. During that time, annual revenue rose from approximately $35 million to more than $2.3 billion.

⠀

His return reduces—at least in the short term—the risk of a complete strategic shift and ensures continuity.

⠀

What Analysts Are Saying

William Blair reaffirmed its "Outperform" rating.

⠀

Analysts view the confirmed guidance as a sign that the underlying business trends have not deteriorated despite the CEO change.

⠀

However, even after the sharp drop in the stock price, the valuation is not obviously cheap:

⠀

• 2027 EV/Sales: ~7.2x vs. peer median 7.1x

• EV/FCF: ~32x vs. peer median 29.4x

⠀

Context | Today’s price drop currently looks more like a reassessment of management risk than a fundamental breakdown . The confirmed guidance and the return of Ittycheria suggest there is no acute operational problem. At the same time, the second CEO change within a year, the ongoing search for a successor, and the still-high valuation remain clear sources of uncertainty.

⠀

Tomorrow’s Investor Day will therefore be significantly more important than originally anticipated. The key will be whether MongoDB can convince the market regarding Atlas growth, its AI strategy, organizational stability, and long-term financial framework .
