There is a good article in the Handelsblatt from the founder himself about the reasons. The point is that they want to devote themselves fully to research again. They can't do that while strategically managing a company.

•@HamsterFrodo yep, the founding couple are two researchers who increasingly realized that building up a complete pharmaceutical company no longer left enough time for their main interest - research. I don't see this as a tragedy, they want to keep their shares and license the technology from Biontech. I think their research could continue to benefit Biontech, but then for a fee. Managers will now be responsible for driving forward the development of active ingredients and the strategic development of Biontech, and it may well be that one or both of the founders will then join the Supervisory Board. As a result, I will hold on to my shares and keep my small savings plan running
