Rocket Lab has begun production of its new solar cell IMM Apex . According to the company, the cell—developed for space applications—achieves an efficiency of 31.5% and is about 40% lighter than previous solutions. At the same time, it is said to offer high radiation resistance and reliable performance across a range of temperatures.
A key advantage is the elimination of germanium, which is used in conventional multi-junction solar cells and is currently associated with rising costs and supply shortages. According to Rocket Lab, IMM Apex can serve as a mechanical and electrical drop-in replacement into existing systems, which could eliminate the need for extensive customer modifications.
Rocket Lab states that it has been testing the technology for more than ten years. According to the company, its solar products power over 1,100 satellites in orbit. For investors, the announcement is particularly interesting because it underscores Rocket Lab’s higher-margin space systems business and its industrial scalability. However, the key factor will be how quickly IMM Apex translates into concrete customer orders and rising revenue.
