Brief introduction to American Water Works💧

$AWK (-1%)

American Water Works Company, Inc. (ticker: AWK) is the largest publicly traded water utility in the United States, serving over 14 million people in 24 states. The company operates water and wastewater facilities and provides water infrastructure and management services. This sector is considered defensive, as water is a basic need and is in demand even in difficult economic times.

AWK has shown solid financial development in recent years. Total sales in the last full financial year amounted to around USD 4.7 billion, which corresponds to an increase of over 10 % compared to the previous year. At the same time, net profit also increased, while the net margin remained stable at around 22%. This illustrates the profitability of the regulated business model. This growth also continued in the quarterly figures: In the third quarter of 2025, revenue amounted to around USD 1.45 billion, while profit increased by around 8 %.

The valuation at key figure level is moderate. The price/earnings ratio is in the range of around 23 to 24, depending on the calculation, while the price/sales ratio is around 5.1 to 5.4, which is typical for a stable utility company. Analysts estimate that earnings growth will continue moderately in the coming years, which supports the company's fundamentals.

A key part of American Water Works' appeal is its dividend policy. The company has been paying a steadily increasing dividend for years. The current dividend is around USD 3.00 per share per year, which corresponds to a dividend yield of around 2.3 % to 2.7 %. Such stable dividend streams are of particular interest to long-term investors as they provide predictable income.

AWK's financial structure is typical for an infrastructure stock. The company has a relatively high level of debt, which is common for capital-intensive areas such as water networks and sewage treatment plants. Free cash flow can be temporarily impacted by high investments, but is part of a long-term renewal and expansion plan aimed at increasing service quality and security of supply.

The planned merger with Essential Utilities, which is intended to create a combined water supply and wastewater platform with a valuation of around USD 40 billion, is strategically important. The merger could increase operational efficiency and realize economies of scale, but is accompanied by regulatory hurdles and integration risks.

Risks remain. Utility stocks typically grow more slowly than technology or consumer stocks and are subject to regulatory requirements. Price regulations, government requirements and capital costs can influence returns. The high level of debt can put pressure on the balance sheet in times of rising interest rates, particularly if capital expenditure increases. Market volatility can also affect defensive stocks such as AWK.

Overall, American Water Works shares offer a combination of a stable business model, solid fundamentals, regular dividends and a defensive focus. AWK can be an interesting addition to a portfolio for long-term investors who value stability, dividend yield and infrastructure exposure. At the same time, investors should be aware of the moderate growth momentum and regulatory challenges.

Unfortunately, this is currently the worst position in my stock picking portfolio in relative terms. However, I assume that the share can benefit disproportionately from future interest rate cuts.

@Pawfolio also negative for me, but just a share for eternity. Sluggish but certainly very stable over time. Not a high-flyer, of course 👍🏼
