What would you do?

Imagine finding a bag with 15,000 euros in cash on a train. This is exactly what happened to a 33-year-old woman on ICE 1081 from Hanover to Munich. She discovered the bag full of 200 euro bills and handed it over to the Federal Police in Munich. The rightful owner has not yet been identified. If no one comes forward, the finder could receive a legal finder's reward of three percent, i.e. 450 euros.

What would the getquin community have done in this situation?

1. invested sensibly in an ETF, such as $IWDA (-5,63%)

2. $4GLD (-2,2%) safe is safe

3. all in $BTC (+0,49%)

4. benefit from the current dip American tech companies, such as $GOOGL (-2,74%) , $NVDA (-7,25%) or $META (-4,44%)

5. collect dividends just before the dividend season, such as $BATS (-4,36%) , $ALV (-8,43%) or $SREN (-6,98%)

6. invest irrationally, e.g. $4X0 (-12,07%) or $GME (+7,09%)

7. or would you take the money to the police and fill your war chest with the finder's fee of EUR 450?

Personally, I would probably choose option 1. If the owner suddenly turned up on my doorstep, I could sell the ETF and give him the money back. There might be a little more left for me as a return than the EUR 450 I would receive from the police 😉

Your comment made me realize that the question was about the €15,000. I thought it was about what you do with the finder's fee. That's why I was very confused by answer 7. Along the lines of: Why should I take the €450 to the police? I got it from them! 😅

risk your life and legality for 15,000? There's always the rule with illegal things that the payoff has to be high enough so you can go far, far away with it and never have to work again. Let's call it the Marsalek coefficient or something.

Probably drug money or something, nobody reports to the police.

What actually happens to the €14,550? Does it just sink into the German bureaucracy?

what about the bag? 🤔 if someone is traveling with paper money, the bag could be quite nice, couldn't it?

@MKR_ 3% finder's fee - probably also applies to the bag. So maybe a button?

Hand in to the police.

I found two gold rings in the supermarket last year. I didn't keep them and didn't hand them in at the checkout (they might have "disappeared" there) but to the police.
The next day I told the supermarket that if anyone asked, they were in the lost and found office.
And the fact is - because of the engraving on the inside, they were two wedding rings belonging to an elderly woman I didn't know and her deceased husband (or vice versa) - they were searched for and returned to their owner.
The emotional loss for the person must have been enormous. I'm happier that the person has them back than a few hundred euros' worth of melt in my pocket.
I have also rejected any claims for a finder's fee 😇

@teschi well traded 🤝

of course also handed in 😉
Since I usually invest quite conservatively, I would probably have invested a little more "risky" (BTC is riskier for me :D) with the other people's money. 50% World - 50% BTC

Clearly hand it in. I would also be happy if I could get my money back. At the same time, however, I would think hard about whether the previous transfer of large sums of money was sensible.

Almost 80,000 euros have disappeared from a safe deposit box at a Berlin police station. The money came from an unsolved probate case, a police spokeswoman said, confirming reports in the "B.Z." and "Bild" newspapers.

It would be safe with me 😉

Honestly, anyone who forgets 15k in cash on the train has only themselves to blame.
I would sit on it or tie it to me if necessary 😅
But never forget...

Top up your household budget again, go on vacation, and then the rest in point 1.

Valuables such as cell phones, rings, cardholders, etc. are always handed in, but I would most likely keep money of this size. 😁
