Since I have been waiting for 1 hour at the worst airport I know in Frankfurt a.M. for the baggage carousel to start moving, I thought I would use the time effectively.😎

WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - The AI summaries before other search results on Google have landed the Internet company its first lawsuit from a major media company. The US publishing house Penske Media with titles such as "Rolling Stone" and "Hollywood Reporter" accuses Google of abusing a monopoly in web search with the function. Google rejected the accusation.
Lawsuit: users no longer have to visit the websites
In the lawsuit, Penske Media points out that the summaries created with the help of artificial intelligence often already answered the user's query. As a result, they often no longer visit the websites from which the information originated. However, media that offer their content free of charge are dependent on this in order to finance themselves through advertising. The media company emphasized that Google now wants to become a destination for users itself instead of being a hub on the way to other websites.
According to Penske Media, this is only possible because Google has a monopoly on web searches. Website operators must therefore accept that the internet company also reserves the right to use the content of the pages for its AI when capturing the network for the search engine. This is a violation of US competition law. Penske Media took the case to the court in Washington, which last year established Google's monopoly in web search.
Google: AI overviews are more helpful
A Google spokesperson countered that users find web searches with AI summaries more helpful and use them more. This also creates new opportunities to discover content online. Google forwards "billions of clicks" to other websites every day - and with the AI overviews, their circle is becoming more diverse.
The internet company is being targeted by new rivals who promise to use artificial intelligence to provide users with direct answers instead of links to information on other websites. Google has been increasingly expanding the use of AI summaries since last year. So far, the internet company's business has been growing rapidly despite the new rivals.
