Hundreds of signal boxes in Switzerland are being modernized

SBB and Siemens Mobility are digitizing the Swiss interlocking network over the next few years. An initial ten-year framework agreement covers the installation of virtual interlockings, maintenance and comprehensive services for the modernization of around 500 systems.

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and Siemens Mobility have concluded a comprehensive framework agreement for the digitalization of interlockings in Switzerland. According to Siemens, this involves the long-term conversion and modernization of around 500 systems, with around 80 percent of the existing signal boxes to be replaced over the next 20 years. The agreement was signed at the beginning of November.

The agreement provides for a term of ten years, with three extension options of five years each, as well as 25 years of maintenance and support. The Siemens Signaling X system will be introduced for the first time, with the interlocking logic being transferred to central data centers. This should significantly increase the capacity, efficiency and reliability of the rail network. The first commissioning is scheduled for 2029.

Siemens Mobility CEO Michael Peter explained that the technology will enable "more trains at shorter intervals" while also contributing to SBB's climate targets. Siemens has been firmly anchored in Switzerland for decades and has local development, production and service expertise in the field of control and safety technology.

The SBB rail network covers around 3,266 kilometers and is the largest standard-gauge rail network in Switzerland, serving both passenger and freight traffic.

@Dividendenopi the million euro question. And when you say that they should alter their way of simulating train travel times, they say that they do it correctly (although the reality tells a different story). From the moment a train has a one minute delay, every train that comes behind it has difficulties and with every stop that minute becomes 5, 10, 20 and then it becomes the 'next' train and the delay is solved (except for the fact that on the next stop 30 minutes of people were added to the people wanting to go wgere they need to go).
So they should slow down in order to go faster, but nobody at DB or the NMBS seems to understand that. And train trajects between big cities are nice, but they should not forget about the people living in between (and not screw them over with a stop train that travels from the North to the south of the country if you get what I'm saying). So indeed more trains, shorter intervals, and more transfers for the passengers, but it works. You only need to invest in trains and drivers. The maintenance of the tracks needs to increase as well, but they should maintain their infrastructure either way.
Now with their strategy, the people from the cities in between are just taking their cars, clogging up the roads even more, but hey, they can go home without having to worry about an hour delay (the 15-20 minutes lost in traffic jams are worth it).
I took the train for 15 years in Belgium and almost every day I had a delay. Now here in Switzerland, the trains are wonderfull. Every month I have about one or 2 delays of about 3-4 minutes. And by the time I reach my end Station, there are only 1 or 2 minutes left of the delay. That is service.

Because DB is a self-service store for burnt-out politicians. It now owns 100 companies worldwide and the core business has been lost sight of. You only have to look at the statements of the trade unions and the passenger association pro Bahn, they have been putting their fingers in the wound for years. You know, despite poor figures and service, the bonuses paid by the Executive Board only go in one direction, you can guess where. ️ When the staff go on strike for better conditions, they are accused of spreading terror (Mehdorn and Sukale 2007).
The stable should be cleaned out and the different companies such as DB Netz, - Infrastruktur etc. should be put back into one hand, because they are planning past each other. It is also unacceptable for a 60% punctuality rate to be rewarded with millions in bonuses and celebrated.

Yes, thanks SBB, last week I was allowed to walk home twice at 1 a.m. because the rail replacement service didn't run until the end of my shift...
