Hello everyone,

Something completely different that has little to do with investing:

I take the train to work.

On the journey, I often notice that older people (30+, no offense meant ^^)

playing games on their smartphones & tablets...

Of course everyone is allowed to do what they want, I just think it's a shame that you don't have anything better to do on the train at that age...

(I, for example, read books for further education, inform myself about investments, listen to "meaningful" podcasts, manage my finances etc...)

Of course there are also people who do similarly meaningful things, I don't want to say that.

I don't want to praise myself or anything...

I see people in suits who look like they are bankers, lawyers or the like...who then play Candy Crush on their cell phones ^^

Since there are a lot of people here in the community with a high net worth/income, I wanted to ask if you do the same? (Maybe it's a secret tactic and I should do it too!)

Has anyone else ever noticed this?

(Like I said, no stress, no criticism, live & let live..just interested)

Depending on what kind of job you have and how stressful it is, you may simply not feel like dealing with anything on the train in the evening and be happy when you can play a game.

Maybe they have to continue working at home or have someone to look after or whatever and those few minutes on the train are for the break.

And even if you want to study, you might simply not be able to take anything in. When I'm on the train in the evening, I also read this and that and then after five minutes I think to myself that I'm no longer receptive and have no idea what I've just read.

And then, of course, there are those who are happy with their lives as they are and really have nothing better to do.

@DividendenWaschbaer Thanks for the comment!

Yes, I already thought so anyway...

The train ride takes over 30 minutes.

I don't just see it in the evening...but also in the morning the Clash of Clans villages are already being monitored 😂
I saw someone the other day who was really hustling in a suit, fighting with 2 cell phones at the same time...

Maybe he's a gaming influencer 😂

When I'm knocked out, reading a book doesn't do me any good either, that's true...

But then I look through my gallery on my phone, for example, and delete a few pictures for more memory 😂

Well, live & let live.

Thanks for your contribution!
1
@Raffi1008 Well, I am/was one of those too. If you're woken up in the morning by a small child who then needs looking after and then you're off to work because you've got training or just a normal day that's been stressful for your head, you're happy if you, as a former full-blooded gamer, have a few minutes to relax. Because at home someone wants to be taken care of again and you still have enough to do.

Imagen de perfil
@HeadoN that's how I feel. As a parent, you're happy when you have some time for yourself during the day
1
@DividendenWaschbaer 100% I sometimes travel 5 hours a day by train because I just live so far away from my workplace and rents there are not affordable, especially as an apprentice - if I then ONLY do something like the above for 5 hours and then work or go to vocational school afterwards.... no, that will be too much - I just do a mix of both, watch videos, play "stupid" games, read, watch stocks etc., but you HAVE to switch off somehow and "stupid" games/videos are simply the best for that in my opinion...

I spend almost 9 hours at work, have three children at home and need my computer for my further education. That means I use my iPad for games when I have the time.

But here's another thing. The way you present it, you're implicitly questioning these people's hobby. Is that how you want your hobbies to be judged? Or even worse: is your life so serious that you don't have any hobbies? That would be very sad.

Life is not just about Ora et labora. You also have to live 🙃 Please never forget that, because otherwise you'll be one of the older ones and you'll realize that your life has passed you by.

@devnerd_daddy Very wise words!
Thank you for that!

You're right, I'm still young & stupid!

Anyone is of course welcome to criticize my hobbies...whether I'm interested in the criticism is a different topic 😂

My hobbies are:
- Reading
- Sport (gym, running, cycling, hiking)
- Cars (so everything that revolves around cars, trade fairs, events, etc.)

The topic of cars is of course not directly a useful hobby...but I see it as fun and motivation!

@Raffi1008 No kidding 🙃 I recognize the irony 😉 but no one is stupid for being young. You have to adjust your perspective at every stage of life. In hindsight, I realize that as a very young person I also had very entrenched and unyielding opinions and that's just the way it was. Now I'm about to turn 40 and I find this whole generation vs. generation thing totally ridiculous. There are smart people everywhere and idiots everywhere, but you can accuse the older generation of being a little revolutionary when they were young.

The bottom line is: live your life and make the best of it. Evaluate other decisions, but always try to understand why people act the way they do.

When I'm old and slow-witted, I also want younger people to be lenient with my failures 😋

@devnerd_daddy great attitude 😉

I deliberately wrote in the article "Live & let live" 😉

I'm trying to understand, that's why I asked.

It shouldn't be negative either, if they like being on their cell phone, let them do it, it doesn't harm me!

Better that than loud phone calls on the train 😂😂

So the comment with the minimum made me want to eat lunch 🤣...

As some people have already written here: Some people just need it to switch off after a stressful day, or to relieve their boredom on the way to work.

Just because someone wears a suit doesn't mean they have to do something 24/7 for MinDSeT reasons.

And a little tip from an "old" 30-year-old: You can't eat money, it doesn't replace friends and memories that you can and should collect in your early 20s.
10
Imagen de perfil
@Der_Dividenden_Monteur an interesting view.

Didn't mean to attack you and the others, of course. "Live & let live" 😉

I think there are many more sensible ways to kill your "boredom" on the train.
They don't have to be financial topics either.

And regarding your tip: I see it very differently, but of course you have more life experience and will already know what you're talking about.

Without money, I have no food.
If I have no/barely any money, I certainly can't collect memories like someone who travels 5 times a year, partying costs money, eating out costs money, giving gifts usually costs money, but not always.

So how do you make memories without money?
1
Imagen de perfil
@Raffi1008 Did I say anything about no money?
You don't need €1000 a month for the things you mentioned.
Imagen de perfil
@Raffi1008 and take the whole thing a little further, even if it is an uncomfortable topic:
Look at the suicide rate in men with midlife crisis/burnout, which usually stems from exactly that, huffing and puffing without end and still missing the mark.

Or the mortality rate between civil servants (no civil servant joke here, for once) and "normal workers who have toiled for 45 years, the mortality rate of this mindset 70-hour week will probably be even lower.

Just my two cents

I do it however I feel like it.
Sometimes I read a book on the way to or from work, sometimes I listen to music and sometimes I just play solitaire on my phone or watch a series on my tablet. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Who cares?
Live and let live.
(I'd be more concerned that you're looking at other people's screens, because you shouldn't be interested in that. Just a private matter. 🤷🏼‍♂️)

And the mindset thing is another one of those things that people like to spread via social media.
Just because I prefer to watch a series on the train or read a novel about dragons instead of reading the latest success coaching from Bodo Schäfer doesn't mean my mindset is wrong or questionable.
Not everyone is only focused on success, wealth and the like, because even at the age of under 30, I know that there are much, much more important topics in life than mindset, further education and the like.

Incidentally, the "meaningful" podcasts are also mostly just the circlejerk of some people who like to listen to speeches.

How do I know that? I used to work in the industry of these "mindset business coaching mentor circlejerk" people.
They talk a bit pompously into their microphone, think they're just spouting fortune cookie slogans and are happy about anyone who is stupid enough to pay €5,000 for coaching or buy a book that a ghostwriter has cobbled together.
(This is an extreme exaggeration and I know that there are good coaches out there).

@Staatsmann
1) I didn't say that EVERYONE should do it this way.

2 I wrote it myself in my post... "Live & let live"

I just wanted to know other people's opinions with this post.

3) I didn't say that I watch them all the time or anything like that. I have my eyes open and when I get off the train and go to the door, I sometimes see what people are doing.

I'm not saying that they do this all the time, nor am I saying that the very same people can't read a book or something similar from time to time.

4 I didn't claim that people's mindset is wrong.

5. by "meaningful" podcasts, I didn't mean coaching sessions.

But rather financial podcasts like: "Aktientalk, Buy the dip, Ohne Aktien wird schwer, Alles auf Aktien, Finanzfluss etc."

And before anyone accuses me of anything:
I don't believe everything the podcasts say
I don't chase after their opinions
I use it as information (to do my own research if something is interesting)

And yes, I also listen to music or comedy podcasts from time to time.

Lg
Imagen de perfil
They just don't know any better, bad mindset. I read so many books without taking the train (sometimes hard to find time)
On the train is probably the best thing you can do.
It's not even hard to be better than the others, most people are not willing to walk the extra mile and read good books on the train or before sleeping, it's just great!
Keep going :)

P.s. Did you know that Candy Crush Saga is blizzard Entertainment's best-selling game?

Imagen de perfil
@stsc92 Exactly...that's how I feel too...that's why I said that I think it's a shame...

In times where it feels like everyone is just complaining...because of too little time, too little money, too much stress etc...people waste their time with games....

I find that really sad...

Your mindset sounds very good.
I have a similar one and am also clearly trying to move away from the average.

I don't want that kind of life.

No, I didn't know...so thanks for the fun fact! 😉
1
Imagen de perfil
@Raffi1008 So the candy crushers are paying our $MSFT dividends. That's nice, too.
2
Imagen de perfil
@Erich_aus_der_Steiermark 😂😂 If you look at it like that, then I should be happy about every Candycrusher I see on the train!
2
Imagen de perfil
@Raffi1008 I used to be so happy about the smokers and now, thanks to $DGE, about the drunk clubbers 🤣
1
Imagen de perfil
@Erich_aus_der_Steiermark Awesome mindset, I should try it too! 😂
Imagen de perfil
@stsc92 you should label satire accordingly, otherwise people will think you're serious. 🤣🤣
3
Imagen de perfil
I read my Handelsblatt on the train and post stuff on getquin 😉. And I travel first class because of my wealth and the dividends I receive. In first class, everyone has their notebook in front of them, typing up reports or talking far too loudly in phone meetings. 🤗

@trader64 On my train in Austria, there are no classes.

They only exist for long-distance journeys.

At 30 minutes to Vienna, everyone is equal 😉

I have to deal with finance all day as an accountant, so I spend my evenings doing undemanding things to switch off. My investment consists only of the All World ETF.
3
Imagen de perfil
@InvestorMJ I understand and I can also understand that.

I wouldn't need the whole day, the work or similar topics either.

I just think that you can use your time much more sensibly than with mobile games...
@Raffi1008 I agree with you. I would listen to music or something else on the train, but it's up to you. You have to be allowed to waste time in this day and age. The pressure to perform and competition is already high these days. I'm just lazing around on the weekends when I'm already busy 5 days a week. Many people grow up with these games. They don't know any different. I don't even have a console, I prefer to go out into nature to relax.
1
Imagen de perfil
Yes, of course! As I said, I don't want to hate it and say that you have to go full throttle all the time! Of course I'm always lazing around too! After all, we are humans and not robots!
Imagen de perfil
For us, it's "off to work" 😅

But you only see a short period of time in people's lives, maybe they just don't want to do anything demanding before or after work and just play. You don't know if they do what you do on the train in the evening before going to sleep.

I (30+) sometimes thought too much about my finances and wanted to acquire too much knowledge. At some point, my head was so closed that I couldn't think about anything else. At some point you drive yourself crazy. That's not the right way either. You have to find a middle way. When I was still taking the train to work, I sometimes just looked out of the window and didn't think about anything.
30+ need to give their heads a break sometimes. May the force be with you my young padawan
2
Imagen de perfil
@Joris and here in Austria you drive "IN" to work. I also go INTO the building...
If you Germans get ON the building, that's fine with me too 😉😂

Yes, I understand...everyone needs a break sometimes.
It's probably better than looking at memes or half-naked people on Insta.

Games do at least partly challenge the brain 😂

But I think you can/(should) simply use the time more sensibly.
Imagen de perfil
@Raffi1008 come from near Cologne, here you say at work and on the Lower Rhine on the Dutch into work. We're all funny 😅

I agree with you there too. If that's the only thing they do all day, it's a waste.

I understand & feel you. Most people can't even live without social media. I prefer to look out of the window, enjoy the moment or talk to people. You're doing the right thing and keep it up, because it's still your "own way". One of my big drives is not to be like you listed in the text above 🙂💯
2
Imagen de perfil
@DonkeyKongx That's right, you're right!

I often think to myself "This is not how I want my life to be when I'm this old"

Not just with all the cell phone gamblers... but also with people who don't look after their bodies and are very overweight...
That always motivates me to go to the gym straight after work...

One of my goals is "Just don't become like the average" 😂

Thanks for your comment!
1
Imagen de perfil
@Raffi1008 a little tip, don't let it get to you too much, otherwise sooner or later you will see people as less valuable if they don't fit your image. Have an open mind & do your thing!🙂💯 PS: I always say that we live in a simulation anyway 😂😂
2
Imagen de perfil
@DonkeyKongx Yes, of course. You're right about that!
Thanks for the tip!

Everything is pre-programmed 😂😂
1
Imagen de perfil
@Raffi1008 and sooner or later you will realize that average is absolutely fine in some stages of life.
1
Imagen de perfil
@DonPromillo Of course.
You're right, of course.

In my opinion, good is always in the eye of the beholder.

For people with severe obesity, their current state of health is (often, NOT always) also fine.

Doctors will say otherwise 😉
1
Imagen de perfil
Difficult. I would just let people do it. For example, I only have the whole working day to read and write, so on the way to work by public transport I often play games or "just" listen to music and daydream. Don't judge a book by its cover 🙃
2
Imagen de perfil
@Danielo I didn't mean it in a judgmental way 😉

I just wanted to find out whether others feel the same way, or whether they do the same.

I also specifically wrote: "Live & let live"

You're welcome to do it, I understand it too.
Imagen de perfil
The only thing I can think of is my life situation. I had to spend almost 3 hours on the train every day for 10 years. Get up at 4:30, take the first train, often work for 10 hours, then get home to my family, often not until 7:30pm. My head was often so empty because I had a job where I was under pressure that I just closed my eyes on the train. I'm 30+ by the way (no offense intended 😆). Made a change in my job and gained more time in life by saving travel time. Nevertheless, I am grateful for the time, as it has enabled me to do the job I do today and the salary is now very, very decent.

Some of my relatives are not highly educated (they don't even have a high school diploma and don't listen to podcasts or news), but have become filthy rich through trading. I think they have millions of euros and have already beaten many with a high level of education. Not everyone has to get rich with education, you get rich the best way you can, but morally. PS they would no longer be traveling by train but more by car

I commuted between Nuremberg and Munich on the RE/ICE for 3 years. Especially in the evening, when you have your 10 hours full, the oven is just off and you want to do everything else except work.

I was mostly content to just look out of the window and observe - 2nd class was usually packed and there wasn't much material to spread out either. Simply seeing something other than a monitor (I'm a computer scientist) and mentally occupying myself with something other than "I still have to do this, that, pineapple". I'm also not the type to listen to audio books or podcasts on the side. If someone is telling me something, I want to be able to concentrate on it...and after 10 hours of work + 2 1/2 hours of driving in the morning, that's no longer possible at some point.

I don't play mobile games - I used to do that when others wanted to play on the PC, I went to the football pitch, soccer is my way of switching off - but with a full-time job, children and voluntary work, I can understand why people with a similar life situation look for ways to switch off during train journeys, for example. Many people at that age hardly have the time.

Don't be older than you are.

I'm a banker, before Corona I took the train to the office every day and I'm also one of the "old ones" who play on the train. It's a nice change of pace that has nothing to do with the job and where you don't have to think much or concentrate.

Hello my dear,
I live in a big city and I notice a lot.
When I see people at the bus stop, everyone is busy with their smartphone.

People are crossing the crosswalk and everyone is on their smartphone.

Mothers with small children in baby carriages almost forget to push the pram and no longer look after small children.
Because they are busy with their smartphones.

Most car accidents happen because of cell phone driving.

The world has changed and AI will continue to change the world.

But according to a study, the happiest people on earth are
Indigenous people on a small island without smartphones and consumption.

I also made your observation about mobile gaming, which is why I wrote about it a few months ago in
