Here's a little update on my experience in the vending machine business.

Some people have followed me on Instagram because they find the topic exciting and are thinking about getting started themselves. I was probably lucky enough to have found a very good place straight away, at least if I trust the initial key figures.

I often read in the comments that this business can never work, that it takes a long time to be profitable or that the effort required to make money from it will be high.

My first conclusion after 2.5 weeks is: every start in a new field of activity involves more effort. Anyone who thinks that they can get rich by putting their feet up right from the start is mistaken. That was the case with my first company 13 years ago, with my second 5 years ago and today in my third business it's the same. Those who are dazzled by the TikTok videos "Get rich overnight" are welcome to do so. The reality looks different to me 😊

In the first 3 weeks the effort was increased, now everyday life is returning and all processes are well established. The effort is decreasing.

👉 Procuring the items is particularly time-consuming

👉 Labels also have to be affixed to the products, as many items come from Asia, the USA & Co

👉 After some time, you have found your retailers, stock more goods and have less effort for procurement

👉 It takes a few days until everything is configured correctly (prices, telemetry, item labeling, stocking and technology configured)

👉 As soon as the processes are in place, the effort is reduced

👉 If the machine is running well, it needs to be replenished every day

👉 Location is the be-all and end-all in this area. It's better to invest a little more time in selecting the location to achieve better sales

👉 Sales decrease in bad weather. In summer, they should increase significantly.

👉 80-150€ turnover per day is the norm. More if the location is good

👉 Cost of sales approx. 45%

👉 Approx. 10% ancillary costs for rent, electricity and insurance

👉 The time required at the beginning should not be underestimated, but also not overestimated. Everything will settle down after 2-4 weeks

👉 I can see from the telemetry which products need to be replenished. The effort is 15-30 minutes per day

👉 Reliable retailers are crucial. I'm happy to pay a few cents more if I can rely on them

👉 Marketing doesn't cost me any money as I only market my vending machine with Insta and & TikTok (own content, no paid)

After 15 days, I have just over €2,000 in sales. Since this week, the effort has decreased significantly. The turnover is between 100-200€ per day, usually around 120-150€/day. As initial capital, I recommend buying a vending machine with initial equipment for around €20,000. When renting or financing a machine, you should factor in €5,000 plus monthly installments. I recommend having approx. 3-6 months of cash in reserve for running costs - for goods, rent, etc.

This is my first brief conclusion after 2.5 weeks in productive business. There will be a comprehensive update between the years.

I like your vending machine business and I'm currently planning a location in Vienna. But I'm still not sure whether it's worth the effort for this grocery store. As soon as I stop refilling the boxes myself, there's hardly anything left. How do you do that? Look after everything yourself?

@7Trader Currently yes. As soon as I have 4-5 machines, I will look for temporary staff to fill them

@Vertriebsliebhaber What do you have left over net per week, without taking your own performance into account?

@7Trader Vienna I imagine it would be very difficult. With all the permits. It's better to look for something private, e.g. a pub and put in a few more vending machines. It will certainly be difficult to find good places, as Coffee and Co, like Seleccta, are already very well established...

@BoersePG My approach would be a 50 square meter restaurant with several vending machines inside. Otherwise it can't be worth it 👍🏽

@7Trader that's what I meant too! There are certainly enough empty bars on Thaliastraße 😂

@BoersePG I have my eye on one in the outer third of Burggasse. Inner district and yet still within a short radius of the U6 underground line.

Cool post! How did you choose the items? Is it a mix of classic candy bars and healthier alternative? Have you tried some protein products?

Very exciting after the move with the girlfriend we also start :)

It would be interesting to see how much profit is left over from €2000 turnover
What about the parking space for such a machine, keyword permit/fees on public parking spaces?
Thanks for the update. I would never have thought that it would yield so much. I'm delighted for you!
