𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝗹𝗮 𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗚𝗲𝗶𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝘁(and what disgusts me)

With this post I am participating in the challenge of @DonkeyInvestor to write a partly positive analysis about an asset they "hate". With me should be known that I am not convinced of the overall concept Tesla.

Important: This post deals with Tesla only fragmentary, who wants to know more about Tesla can contact me at @MelonUsk97 but you should be aware that he wears positive glasses, while I wear negative ones.

𝗡𝘂𝗻 𝗔𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘇𝘂𝗺 𝗜𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗹𝘁:

𝟭. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘂𝗻𝗴:

Tesla has been leading the world e-car sales for years, in 2021, for example, Tesla ranks first and third on the list of the most sold electric cars with the Model 3 and Model Y, respectively. Tesla should have a broader customer base due to this market position, you simply see the car more often on the road and the brand remains in the head. But this is not the only way Tesla is ahead of the other publicly traded manufacturers:

One of the big advantages a Tesla has over other e-vehicles is the ability to use Super Chargers. On the one hand, the Tesla-exclusive charging option makes for a much more convenient way to travel (and reduces one of the disadvantages of the e-car), and on the other hand, it allows Tesla drivers to clearly differentiate themselves from the rest of the other electric drivers.

In short, Tesla has become the market leader in electric cars, and it will be very difficult to displace it.

𝟮. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲

Tesla has a profit margin on the Model 3 of a little under 25%. Thus, in 2021, Tesla could

achieve a better overall profit margin than all other publicly traded manufacturers (Tesla 12.1%, BMW/Benz 12.0%).

But this small lead is only in the overall evaluation, in the individual vehicles there is a single manufacturer that tops the 25% (Porsche with up to 50%). Tesla has a top margin and offers a buying opportunity to more drivers than Porsche due to a lower price.

𝟯. 𝗘𝗹𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗸, 𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝘆𝗽𝗲

Tesla/Elon Musk knows how to create hype, he influences a large part of our society/younger generation like no other CEO. Whether a cybertruck is announced now (and kept being postponed), Tesla doesn't need publicity to stay in the conversation, even though the design of the vehicles sold is considered ugly. (can be read)

Now, however, we come to the part that makes investing in Tesla impossible for me:

𝟰. 𝗗𝗶𝗲 Ü𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗴:

For a company that is not designed for growth, a P/E ratio of 116.39 (05/22/2022) would be totally overvalued, but you have to give Tesla credit for still growing strongly. If we now assume an average P/E ratio of 10 for a car manufacturer (if we look at Mercedes or BMW, for example, this is still unrealistic: 5.66 6.62), Tesla's profit would have to at least triple, just to do justice to the current valuation. Even if we look at the manufacturer Ferrari (ca.35) (no Tesla is not even close in terms of luxury) Tesla would have to almost quadruple to meet the valuation. I don't see any margin cuts at Tesla at the moment that aren't being complained about at other manufacturers either, which would speak for a justifiably higher P/E ratio. I also don't see the "Tesla needs to be valued as a tech stock" statement here, as Tesla's main profit comes from cars. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely can't foresee a growth of Tesla on 15+ years, but the current valuation of shares mostly refers only to the growth of the next 4-8 years and there I just don't see such a gigantic growth. In my opinion, the stock is absurdly overvalued and accordingly there is no place for Tesla shares in my portfolio.

𝟱. 𝗗𝗮𝘀 𝗘𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘁

Whether I detest the company and / or the people, I leave it to the reader, it is only a personal opinion in the statement.

For me it is important to have at least some confidence in the company / the manager of a company in which I invest, otherwise I will never buy shares of the company. The following points speak against it:

(These points alone do not necessarily speak for a distrust, it goes more with the sweeping under the table of this information on the part of Tesla, on the other hand, I find all points repulsive, I will keep the endsprechenden points as short as possible, because it should be an overview, but in the sources you can read more 『!』『!』『!』)

𝟝.𝟙 ℝ𝕒𝕤𝕤𝕚𝕤𝕞𝕦𝕤

Tesla has several lawsuits on its hands in the U.S., some of which are about systematic discrimination, where you are even penalized if you solve the problem.

𝟝.𝟚 𝕊𝕖𝕩𝕚𝕤𝕞𝕦𝕤

A similar point can be made about sexism. There is talk of a "misogynistic work atmosphere" coupled with sexism, accused are both Teslas and Musk, who is accused of building a racist and sexist system. At Tesla, there is an environment "where it is normal to whistle at them, ogle them, touch them inappropriately, and make advances." also Musk himself seems to sexually harass women, but that in a later point.

(𝟝.𝟛 ℂ𝕠𝕣𝕠𝕟𝕒𝕝𝕖𝕦𝕘𝕟𝕦𝕟𝕘

Musk had written downright contrarian posts on Twitter in 2020 on the subject of Corona, but these have long since been deleted. Even during the height of the pandemic in the U.S., Musk intentionally violated federal regulations and allowed production to continue in his factories).

⬆️muss might be revised as long as the brackets, there is a court case going on

𝟝.𝟜 ℍ𝕒𝕝𝕥𝕦𝕟𝕘 𝕒𝕟 𝔾𝕖𝕤𝕖𝕥𝕫𝕖

However, this is not Mr. Musk's only law-breaking behavior....

Whether we address the SEC, building regulations in Brandenburg, German labor laws, racism or sexism at Tesla/Musk, it is actually permanently against the law, it really amazes me why some people even on Getquin admire this behavior and want other CEOs like Musk. Not only is this extremely toxic within the company (which usually has a negative impact on long-term success), on the other hand, the behavior offers enormous risks for the value of the company Tesla. Whether we are talking about the fact that a factory worth billions may not even be approved or other thoroughly reprehensible behavior, for me personally, a far too large unmanageable risk is taken here with the money of shareholders. It is also a big risk that Tesla with Musk is pulling off a real one-man show. Without Musk, I would not see Tesla at its current overvaluation.

𝟝.𝟝 𝔸𝕓𝕙ä𝕟𝕘𝕚𝕘𝕜𝕖𝕚𝕥 𝕧𝕠𝕟 ℂ𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕒

Similar to all mass-producing automakers, the Chinese market is extremely important for Tesla (25%+ of sales). However, Tesla takes a special role here according to Businessinsider, since the CCP has probably declared Tesla as the main competitor of its own electric vehicles (understandable according to the mass). Last year, an alleged brake problem with Chinese Teslas was conspicuous. While no open connection to the CP can be found, it is nevertheless extremely noticeable when certain topics are spread in a certain way. So we can assume that the Kp wants to shrink Tesla within China in the long run. On the other hand, Musk is building up close ties to the KP, and in retrospect, Musk should have asked the Kp to censor reports on the braking issue. Of course, other companies also try to align themselves with the CP (VW cough cough), but it is acted to a much lesser extent anti-democratically.

𝟝.𝟞 𝕊𝕖𝕩𝕦𝕖𝕝𝕝 𝔹𝕖𝕝ä𝕤𝕥𝕚𝕘𝕥 𝕧𝕠𝕟 𝕄𝕦𝕤𝕜

Elon Musk is accused of sexually assaulting and harassing a Space X flight attendant. He allegedly exposed himself to her, touched her, and then offered to give her a horse if she had sex with him. A lawsuit in court was prevented with a hush money, which was probably intended to sweep the incident under the table. Although there is no conviction (because there is no trial), Musk's own statement speaks for the guilt of the billionaire: Musk once said that he would take legal action against accusations that do not apply to him, in true circumstances he would avoid the legal process and prefer a compensation payment.

𝟝.𝟟 𝕍𝕠𝕣𝕘𝕖𝕥ä𝕦𝕤𝕔𝕙𝕥𝕖 𝕌𝕞𝕨𝕖𝕝𝕥𝕗𝕣𝕖𝕦𝕟𝕕𝕝𝕚𝕔𝕙𝕜𝕖𝕚𝕥

Very new in the Tesla topic is the ejection from the S&P 500 for violating ESG criteria.

Musk called his company the greenest on earth, but this is absolute nonsense. Whether we are talking about the extraction of silicon, the use of drinking water, the violation of environmental regulations in the construction of factories in Germany and China, or a code of ethics for the clarification of deaths as a result of the use of "Autopilot", an ESG-friendly classification has long been a mystery to me. In addition, to call a car manufacturer (whether electric, hydrogen or normal combustion) the most environmentally friendly company in the world borders on mockery.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Sony is currently the most sustainable company.

Agree with you 100%. Tesla is an exciting and innovative company. However, the valuation and Musk as CEO make the stock uninvestable for me.

@Vic1 @SharkAce the dear sven is unfortunately blocked due to extremely toxic behavior and insults, when I discuss with someone I want to hear arguments and not insults and bogus accusations. furthermore, his behavior has not only been directed against me which is why I felt it necessary to ban him from my comment lines. so far, however, sven is alone in this, since no other user has ever struck me in such a drastic negative way.

@tim1 unfortunately, straight up lies are told here, e.g. the racism issue, which is probably lower at tesla than at many other companies with 100k+ employees. Since Tesla and especially bad news about tesla are always very well received, rare individual cases are extremely inflated in the media. Same issue with Corona, musk has e.g. in Fremont only started again with the production, when Ford and gm had already started their own production. The lockdown in California had also long since ended at that time and, with comparable incidences, work had also long since resumed in Europe at VW and Co. In contrast to other manufacturers, Tesla had even worked out a very good and detailed program based on its experience in China, which should minimize the risk of infection. With the P/E ratio, it is strangely looked at how the situation is with other car manufacturers, although it is hardly comparable, with the extremely comparable situation with the reopening of the factories in the corona time, it is strangely ignored. I do not want to accuse the author of bad intentions, but unfortunately it shows that there was already no objectivity at the beginning.
profile image
@Lunnaris01 accusing me of lying and then saying it's probably less than I'm portraying it is contradictory (feel free to refute my source exactly), furthermore I refer to the beginning of the post, it is portrayed that I'm currently wearing negative glasses regarding tesla

@Derebete I can break down some of your, let's call them instead of "lies" if necessary better false statements. First of all you make at least indirectly the statement that Musk is a corona denier, this is factually as said incorrect, he has repeatedly said that he considers corona a dangerous disease and he and his family is as said also vaccinated, he has only questioned whether the restrictions are proportionate. I know that it is cool lately to put everything in a "Schwurbler" drawer, but rational people should be able to objectively decide which measures are reasonable in which context, e.g. whether a factory, if it takes appropriate safety precautions, can not still produce, because the risk of infection is minimal here, when 50km further the people have already opened the cafes again.
You also say, "Even during the height of the pandemic in the U.S., Musk intentionally violated federal regulations and allowed production to continue in his factories." Again, this statement is factually incorrect, California and the state government had already said the industry could reopen. Only the County had not given approval, even though a Detailed Infection Control Plan had been filed for some time, after which Tesla sued the County. So it is at best a misrepresentation of things, a German counterpart would be if e.g. the chancellor and prime minister say all industry can reopen if there is a safety concept, and then your county refuses to verify your safety concept. Your statement on the other hand sounds like the whole country is still in lockdown and Tesla alone rises above it and just opens its factory. At the time Tesla resumed production, virtually everyone else in the state was already producing again. In fact, on May 8, the government initiated Stage 2, which allows "low-risk" companies to reopen. Low-risk is defined in the nytimes as: "Those include workplaces like factories, with more spaced-out work stations, or nongrocery retail stores, but with curbside pickup." Compared to the "higher-risk" businesses that had to wait for "Stage 3", which the NYTimes defines as " nail and hair salons, gyms, movie theaters and sports without live audiences, as well as in-person religious services." I don't think we need to discuss that Tesla should fall into the 2nd category here. The discussions about whether Tesla should open the factory anyway, against the County's wishes, only came up about a week later. If you look at Tesla's "Cost of Revenue", you can assume that a week without production in Fremont cost the company about 50 million at that time, a loss that only occurred because the County went against the State's wishes, although it was legally unclear whether the County itself was allowed to undermine the State's decision in order to keep companies in lockdown. I think it is also in the interest of the employees that Tesla does not let itself be mobbed by some suburban mayors who ignore the state requirements. I do not want to go too deep into conspiracy theories, but there are speculations that the ignoring of the safety concept was politically motivated, because in the past, the corresponding people have always voted very friendly towards Big Oil in corresponding decisions. That there are enough people in politics who are not well-disposed towards Tesla is clearly provable, even today Tesla is not allowed to sell its own vehicles in certain states because of political blockades and also the general behavior of e.g. Biden since he is president. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter why the county tried to prevent Tesla from reopening the factory on the date given by the governor, but the factor is the idea that Tesla and Elon are swindlers and corona deniers because they want to reopen their factory on the date given by the governor. In this sense, I would urge you not only to read the headlines of the mainstream media, but to take a closer look at the situations, and perhaps also at what Tesla has to say about it, the best example also on the ESG topic is to simply read Tesla's Impact Report. Who builds the factories with the lowest water consumption, which company has made massive efforts, for example, to remove cobalt from its own cell chemistry. Which car manufacturer plasters its factories with solar panels? Which manufacturer puts the efficiency of its vehicles and thus lower power consumption first, instead of simply building larger batteries into vehicles like Ford or Mercedes? Show me a company with a 144-page impact report that clearly shows where it currently stands in terms of sustainability, for example, what its goals are and how it is currently working to achieve these goals.

Media nowadays sell less and less news and journalism, they sell advertising, and with negative Tesla headlines you can generate good clicks, the same with Elon, he is a polarizing personality with millions of followers and fans, and you get a lot of traffic if you can trigger the fans on the one hand and fire the haters on the other. Since Tesla doesn't advertise, it doesn't matter to report unfairly, on the contrary, other big advertisers like other car manufacturers might even be happy. This does not mean that the media have no value, but that they should be consumed under these aspects.
profile image
@Lunnaris01 that with the corona provisions I look at the next week again, revise that if necessary, with the statement that tesla is not the most environmentally friendly company in the world I remain, for a car manufacturer they are manyicht good, but beyond that they can not compete with the other contenders for the title of the most climate-friendly company in the world, nevertheless, thank you for the correction if necessary
profile image
@Derebete According to S&P, Tesla was excluded because they are in the bottom 25% of their industry group. This means that they believe that 75% of the car manufacturers are better positioned here, which is relatively absurd. As far as environmental friendliness is concerned, one should always consider the impact as a whole. If you look at Nordex as a company, for example, the pure production of wind turbines and also the installation on sealed surfaces with a large concrete surface as an anchor is also not unconditionally what one would consider "environmentally friendly", but you can not ignore that the things 20-30 years will supply thousands of households with wind energy. Same with electric cars, clearly the production of an electric car is not the most environmentally/climate friendly thing ever, but if Tesla hadn't sold their current ~1M vehicles in the last 12 months, it wouldn't be 1M less vehicles driving, it would be 1M more internal combustion vehicles driving. Also, the Teslas that are currently on the road will continue to provide emission-free transport for 5-10 years or even longer. In addition, electricity generation is already relatively green and is becoming greener, while the situation in the transport sector is actually deteriorating in part because people are increasingly turning to SUVs and high-performance vehicles, while combustion vehicles are already so far advanced in their development phase that they are no longer efficient, so to speak. Electromobility is the only way to decarbonize this sector (besides the illusion that everyone suddenly wants to drive a train) and no one is working harder on this than Tesla, not least because with the Model 3 they even risked driving the company completely to the wall in order to finally produce a usable electric car for the masses.
Last but not least, Tesla has produced more electricity with the solar modules they sell than their own gigafactories and all vehicles in the fleet have consumed combined. The source for this is unfortunately only Tesla itself, but I don't know how anyone else could get this data. I recommend you to have a look at the Impact Report of Tesla, it is not only about climate friendliness, but also about diversity or LGBTQ friendliness. And regarding diversity and alleged discrimination of the employees, the media is exploiting every little accusation of racism, but the fact that Tesla e.g. is again in the list of the best companies in the world in 2021 is not a problem. 2021 again in the list of best workplaces for people who would identify as LGBTQ+ is never reported by the same media and you only find out if you read e.g. specific Tesla news like teslamag or teslarati. https://www.hrc.org/resources/best-places-to-work-for-lgbtq-equality-2022 https://www.tesla.com/ns_videos/2021-tesla-impact-report.pdf

but if i now compare the destruction/pollution of billions of cubic meters of earth and water with offshore wind energy the result is actually clear ps: to take tesla itself as a source about tesla i find critical, see nicola, Wirecard, Elisabeth Holmes etc, even if i agree with you that they could know it best
profile image
@Derebete At the end of the day, no manufacturing industry is ever "climate friendly", but as long as we don't proclaim a dictatorship in which all these things are simply banned, I think we should look at what is best in comparison to what. Tons of nuclear waste, massive coal holes+CO2 blowing out or just the negative aspects of e.g. wind energy or battery production. Perfectly sustainable would be unfortunately only in a cave in the forest, but that will be difficult to enforce in our society. I think Tesla is very committed to doing the right thing in this context.

The criticism is not unjustified. Elon Musk attracts attention with funny trolls, but unfortunately also with some scandals. In the valuation, I miss the important chips developed in-house and the immense amount of data that fuels autonomous driving. The dependence on Nvidia that Mercedes/BMW etc. have pleases me as an Nvidia bagholder, but costs the old car companies immense fees. It's really not a pure car company but more of a tech company. It's difficult to value a growing tech company using only a P/E ratio. I think China could still take a lot of revenge if the "great" gigafactories are not built elsewhere in time. Btw. in the last link you forgot an "h" in front.

I'm just wondering whether I should comment, because with you @Derebete you've already lost the plot anyway. I'll just list a few positive things that you could have come up with as a Tesla critic.
1.Tesla and SpaceX are the most popular employers for engineers
2.Tesla produces their own batteries
3.Tesla is a vertically integrated company and is expanding this even further
4.Tesla has the most beta testers on the road= huge amount of data, whether that means they dominate FSD,you may disagree.
5. and 5 other things that I can't think of right now, but should be listed in a well-researched analysis.
I won't go into the half-knowledge in the lower part now.

@Matthias04 Engineers and tesla 😂 have you ever looked at what the rush at Porsche, Mercedes and Bosch looks like? i think you have slightly strange numbers there (as far as Germany is concerned)

furthermore you can come to me with whatever you want as long as you don't disprove the 5th something points i won't invest in such a company
profile image
@Derebete Who is talking about Germany? Or German engineers. To your negative points, 1. overvaluation: I can't help you if you didn't pay attention in math and don't understand exponential development and maybe you've heard of economies of scale, I don't know exactly where you get the Kgv from, besides, what's wrong with not valuing a fast-growing car company (more software in the future) like a tech company?
2.racism and sexism: you're right, but show me a company of this size that doesn't have a problem with it.
3.adherence to laws: i'm not aware of any fines, but feel free to provide me with any evidence,
4. dependence on china: this "problem" still exists at the moment, but is no longer there due to the further ramp-up of berlin and austin.
5.sexual harassment: "is accused" that's all there is to it, i can accuse you of something too
6.fake environmental friendliness: i hope that was a joke, if it wasn't for tesla, there would still be no e-cars on the roads today
profile image
@Matthias04 on the last point, I recommend the dlf source: are electric cars climate-friendly...

to 5: I won't pay you hush money for a made-up story, but I will sue you for a few million in the usa

on the legal stuff: the source on corona even mentioned that there was the possibility of musk's imprisonment,

about the exponential growth: i understand exponential growth but tesla can't grow tenfold in 5 years, sorry i believe that even with exponential growth
profile image
@Matthias04 on exponential growth: yes, within 5 years you increase tenfold at a growth rate of 60%pa, but I doubt that growth will remain this high

I agree with you. In my view, however, the positive reference to battery technology is missing. And I would add the reckless approach to autonomous driving. Many people believe that Tesla is the top dog here, simply because Elon Musk is taking disproportionately high risks and activating functions that others have so far held back, even though they are technically even further ahead. But here too, Musk is prepared to take any risk.

I think his mentality is important for a start-up. To pull out your elbows to achieve a lot quickly. But he's now beyond that. And as an established company, you can't really afford to behave like that anymore.

profile image
Very well summarized. I would like to add that Musk can be very volatile. Should he one day decide to turn his main focus away from Tesla or even disappear from it, the share price could plummet. All the hype surrounding Musk would be over. And there are enough indications of the impact his tweets can have on the financial markets, especially in the crypto sector.
Super post, detailed
