The fifth company from my "Bottleneck" investment universe (personal portfolio and Wikifolios) that I'd like to briefly introduce is Harmonic Drive Systems $6324 (-7.84%) from Japan.
For a robot to operate precisely, it needs highly precise movements. This is often where the actual technical bottlenecks arise. Harmonic Drive Systems is one of the world’s leading suppliers of high-precision gearboxes and drive systems.
The products are used wherever maximum accuracy, zero backlash, and reliability are critical—for example, in industrial robots, humanoids, semiconductor equipment, medical technology, and aerospace.
With the expected expansion of automation and Physical AI , the demand for high-quality precision drives is also expected to rise significantly. While many companies focus on software or robotics platforms, Harmonic Drive supplies a key component without which many modern robots would not be able to achieve their full performance potential.
That is why, in my view, Harmonic Drive Systems is a classic DIBS bottleneck stock in the field of Physical AI–Motion & Robotics.
SPS (Stock Potential Score): 14/15 points
- Quality: 5/5 – Global market leader in harmonic drive gearboxes, decades of expertise, high barriers to entry, and a strong market position in the precision drive sector.
- Growth: 4/5 – Robotics and physical AI offer enormous long-term growth. In the short term, however, order intake and margins fluctuate cyclically, which is why I am not awarding full points.
- Strategic Fit: 5/5 – Fits perfectly into the DIBS system. Harmonic Drive, with Motion & Robotics , occupies a central technology path within Physical AI and ideally complements sensor technology, edge AI, and actuator technology.
To me, this is a typical Main Pick in the DIBS system. The score is my subjective assessment.
I’m not interested in the robot manufacturers (e.g., UBTech) alone. I specifically look for the companies that provide the key technologies necessary for robotics to function on a large scale in the first place. That’s exactly why Harmonic Drive Systems belongs in my investment universe.
