KRAKEN ROBOTICS ANNOUNCES THE DEATH OF FOUNDER AND FORMER CEO KARL KENNY
Kraken Robotics Inc. founder and former CEO Karl Kenny passed away on February 11, 2025 at the age of 64. Mr. Kenny founded Kraken in 2012 and was instrumental in building the company into a leading player in underwater robotics during his 10-year tenure before retiring in December 2022.
"Karl was an idea generator and builder whose energy was as tireless as his passion to compete with the bigger players in the industry," said Greg Reid, President and CEO of Kraken Robotics. "He has been an incredible force in driving Kraken to success. On behalf of the board, management and employees, we will sorely miss him."
Mr. Kenny grew up in a small fishing village in Newfoundland and had a deep connection to the sea. During his 45-year career in the marine technology industry, he led the development of a wide range of advanced marine technologies and products in Canada, the United States and Europe.
Mr. Kenny served for a time as a naval officer in the Canadian Navy and was always involved with high technology. He was part of the Microsoft Mouse project team in the 1980's and in the 1990's he founded Telepix, a leading provider of photo e-commerce solutions. In July 2003, he co-founded Marport Deep Sea Technologies Inc. and served as its President and CEO until December 2011. In 2012, Mr. Kenny founded Kraken to commercialize compact, low-cost Synthetic Aperture Sonar technology for unmanned systems.
"Karl's strategic vision and entrepreneurial spirit enabled Kraken, a small Newfoundland start-up, to punch well above our weight class and gain worldwide recognition for our high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Sonar technology," said David Shea, Executive Vice President and CTO (Chief Technology Officer) of Kraken Robotics. "We are grateful for all that Karl has contributed to Kraken and recognize that he leaves a legacy of innovation and excellence that we will carry forward in our work."
