AI breakthrough in the defense sector: GSI Technology wins multi-million dollar contract for drone defense
SUNNYVALE (California) - The small-cap specialist GSI Technology (NASDAQ: $GSIT
) is causing a stir in the AI hardware sector. The company announced Wednesday that it has signed a strategic proof-of-concept agreement with the US Department of War (DoW) and another international government agency.
The "Sentinel" project
In collaboration with the Israeli deep-tech specialist G2 Tech GSI is developing the program "Sentinel" program. This is an autonomous perimeter protection system that coordinates drones and cameras in real time. The system is designed to autonomously detect and respond to threats while maintaining human supervision (human-in-the-loop).
Technological advantage through Gemini-II
At the heart of the cooperation is GSI's Gemini-II APU (Associative Processing Unit). In contrast to conventional architectures, this uses compute-in-memory technology.
- Advantage: Sensor data is processed directly in the memory. This enables AI inference in real time with extremely low power consumption - a decisive factor for mobile drone systems and tactical operations in difficult conditions.
- Funding: GSI expects to receive around 1 million US dollars for software optimization and system integration.
Market reaction and outlook
The share price reacted on Wednesday morning with a temporary jump of over 16 %. With a market capitalization of around USD 270 million and a share price increase of an impressive 181 % in the past year GSI underpins its status as a serious challenger in the field of specialized AI chips for edge applications.
CEO Lee-Lean Shu sees the order as a validation of the Gemini II platform, which delivers performance where "traditional architectures cannot keep up".
