Just had to chime in. Hodl and take tax-free profits, or forget about retirement 😂.

It can go back up now.

I have that plan, too. I'm still hoping the tax won't come, but if it does, I want as much as possible to be tax-free 🤷‍♂️

Don't the taxes apply to coins purchased earlier?

@Ned-Flanders Not yet decided. But in general, the government can’t just make changes retroactively. Protection of existing rights.

No more money left—why not tax gold for the last 50 years, for those who traded gold tax-free after a one-year holding period? 😉

Ahh, okay, maybe I'll buy some Bitcoin and Solana soon, too, haha

Thanks for the reply

@Papiertiger In Austria, it was passed retroactively 👍🏽

@Ned-Flanders According to the current draft bill, the holding period will not apply only to Bitcoin purchased after December 31, 2026.
But it’s just a draft, so things could turn out quite differently. I’m holding off on buying more for now, but I’m already setting aside some fiat. Once the effective date is confirmed, I’ll make one last purchase.

@Alpalaka delightful—then surely that can also be used as a draft and justification.

@Papiertiger From a purely formal (legal) standpoint, this would not constitute retroactive taxation. It would be retroactive if you were required to pay taxes after the fact on gains that were tax-free (realized) at the time. If you were to sell after the cutoff date, the taxation would theoretically not be retroactive.
