The multi-billion euro tender for a large part of the Berlin S-Bahn network has been decided after years of delays.
According to the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, the contract for important north-south and east-west connections was awarded to a consortium consisting of Deutsche Bahn, Stadler Rail and Siemens. The consortium prevailed over its competitor Alstom, which can still take legal action against the decision.
The largest award procedure for local public transport in Europe involves a contract volume of around 15 billion euros. It includes the operation of several S-Bahn lines from the 2030s for 15 years, the delivery of 1,400 new carriages and vehicle maintenance for 30 years.
To date, the so-called north-south and light rail sub-networks have been operated by the rail subsidiary S-Bahn Berlin GmbH, as has the Ringbahn. The latter was not part of the tender launched by the states of Berlin and Brandenburg in 2020.
